Metastatic laryngeal large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma: A rare case of presentation and extreme tumor burden.

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the larynx is an aggressive form of neuroendocrine carcinoma that affects smokers at an average age of 60 years. LCNEC is characterized by large cells with round to ovoid nuclei distributed in a trabecular or nested growth pattern. Previously, laryngeal LCNEC and atypical carcinoid tumors were considered identical; however, laryngeal LCNEC has been shown to have higher mitotic rates and worse prognosis, which has led to laryngeal LCNEC's being separated from atypical carcinoid and classified as a poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma in t

[TNM system: presentation of graphic classification of T laryngeal cancer].

Using the most recent TNM revision as a basic framework to build upon, the Authors set up a graphic representation of the larynx on the basis of data gathered using clinical-instrumental examination. This graph, which allows automatic extrapolation of the degree of T, represents various sites and subsites of the larynx (including the pre-epiglottic area, the retro-cricoid area and the piriform sinus) which are divided by different coloured lines. This simple graphic representation of cancerous tumours, whose various colours indicate tumor extension in depth (data had with CT and RM), allows fo

A Rare Case of Colon Adenocarcinoma Metastases to the Trachea: A Case Report.

Primary tracheal malignancies are rare, and nonpulmonary metastasis to the trachea is exceedingly rare. Computed tomography (CT) imaging may not detect small or submucosal lesions, especially if performed without contrast. We present a rare case of metastasis of colorectal adenocarcinoma to the trachea and left mainstem bronchus 10 years after the initial cancer diagnosis. A 75-year-old man presented with a one-month history of globus sensation, a perception of an object ball-valving in his chest, and the ability to produce an audible noise with forced exhalation. He had a history of stage IV

Increased Incidence of Invasive Group A Streptococcus Infections and Fatalities in Southern Wisconsin.

In spring 2024, 2 otherwise healthy men were diagnosed with invasive Group A Streptococcus (iGAS) meningitis at autopsies performed at 2 separate southern Wisconsin (WI) offices. As iGAS is a rare cause of bacterial meningitis, this raised concern for an outbreak and/or increased organism virulence. The 2 offices retrospectively searched their databases for iGAS deaths from 2002 to 2024 and collaborated with the WI State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) and WI Department of Health Services (WI-DHS) to assess corresponding statewide iGAS activity. The search revealed a total of 19 iGAS deaths (age

Interrelationship Between Intraepithelial Nerve Endings and Epithelial Cells in the Rat Epiglottis Revealed by Array Tomography With Scanning Electron Microscopy.

Nerve endings in the laryngeal mucosa interact with epithelial cells to generate sensory discharges against various external stimuli. In the present study, we performed array tomography with scanning electron microscopy to examine the morphological interrelationship between intraepithelial nerve endings and epithelial cells in the rat epiglottis. In the epiglottic mucosa, thin nerve fibers/endings and ramified nerve endings were observed in the epithelial layer. Thin nerve fibers/endings had varicosities and terminal swellings, and ran in the shallow grooves of epithelial cells. The varicositi

Measuring Vallecular Volume on Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing: A Proof of Concept Study.

Currently, no method exists to measure the size of pharyngeal and laryngeal structures on endoscopy. Imaging for dysphagia diagnostic techniques, for the most part, still relies on qualitative assumptions and cursory visual examinations to induce patients' swallowing safety and function. In this proof of concept study, we measured vallecular cavity volume using simultaneous modified barium swallows (MBS) and flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). Similar to the three-dimensional image compilation fields of facial reconstruction, medical imagery, and forensic science, this propose
