Sixteen consecutive patients underwent hip fusion with fixation by a cobra head compression plate. In six patients on osteotomy of the innominate bone also was done. Four patients had no osteotomy whatsoever, while in six patients medial displacement of the femur was accomplished by centrally dislocating the femoral head through the acetabulum. This modification made the surgical procedure and postoperative care simpler, and rehabilitation was easily accomplished. All of the hips treated in this series had successful bone fusion. All of the patients were out of bed within the first postoperati

UNLABELLED: Developmental coxa vara (DCV) develops during early childhood between the age of independent walking and 6 years. The deformity includes a decrease in the neck-shaft angle and femoral retroversion. Recently, good results have been reported using external fixator systems for the correction of proximal femoral deformities secondary to slipped capital femoral epiphysis, Perthes' disease in children, and percutaneous proximal femoral osteotomy for coxa vara. This preliminary study was performed to evaluate the results of percutaneous subtrochanteric osteotomy in restoring the normal al

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is the slippage of the proximal femoral epiphysis on the femoral neck through the epiphyseal plate. This condition is generally observed in male, obese patients during pubertal growth spurts, and it can sometimes be associated with endocrine disorders. Despite its significant incidence in the paediatric population, the diagnosis is frequently delayed which leads to significant worsening of the prognosis. We present a case of SCFE in which the diagnosis was delayed due to a series of confounding factors.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
OBJECTIVES: To review the findings in the cases of spondyloptosis we have treated and to postulate on the possible cause of spondyloptosis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spondyloptosis (Grade V spondylolisthesis) is rare, even though spondylolisthesis is a relatively common condition. While it is known that progression to spondyloptosis occurs in patients with developmental spondylolisthesis in their childhood and/or adolescent years, the precise factors leading to progression are not known.
METHODS: Between 1979 and 2002, 27 patients with spondyloptosis we

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) requires surgical treatment. In German-speaking countries, dynamic in-situ fixation is commonly used for mild SCFE lenta. Various implants are available for this purpose.
OBJECTIVE: High complication rates have been reported for the removal of titanium gliding screws. In this retrospective study, we analyzed the complications in the treatment of SCFE, particularly focusing on the removal of sliding screws made of stainless steel and K‑wires.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 111 patients with SCFE were treated, including 96 fixations using

BACKGROUND: Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) is femoral head slippage off the femoral neck through the physis occurring in children aged 8-16 years. Surgical intervention is required in all paediatric cases and there is no universal agreement on choice of surgical procedure.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the two-year 3D gait outcomes in children with SCFE who have undergone in-situ pinning (PIN) or modified Dunn procedure (MDP) compared with normative reference values?
METHODS: 17 children with SCFE who had undergone PIN (n=7, slip severity mild to moderate) or MDP (n=10, slip severity

Hip disorders are a wide range of conditions commonly affecting patients in the pediatric age group. Reaching an accurate diagnosis of these conditions in children may be challenging. The optimal use of image modalities in the approach of a child with possible hip pathology is essential, which allows radiologists and clinicians to narrow the differential diagnosis and reach a definitive diagnosis, which can consequently result in early and appropriate interventions leading to improved outcomes. Therefore, this article aims to provide practicing radiologists and clinicians with up-to-date and e

BACKGROUND: The modified Dunn procedure has been shown to be safe and effective in treating unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). We present a consecutive series of unstable SCFE managed by a single surgeon with a focus on timing of surgical intervention, postoperative complications, and radiographic results.
METHODS: Thirty-one consecutive unstable SCFEs were treated. Demographics, presentation time to time of operation, surgical times, and complications were recorded. Bilateral hip radiographs at latest follow-up were utilized to record slip angle, α angle, greater trochanteric

Background and purpose - Patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) are phenotypically overweight or obese and may therefore require clinical follow-up of obesity-related disorders. We evaluated obesity-related disorders such as dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and vitamin-D deficiency during the postoperative period in patients with SCFE. Patients and methods - 51 patients who were operated and followed-up for SCFE and 62 healthy adolescents without SCFE (control group) were included in this retrospective study. Patients' BMI, serum lipid profile (total cholesterol, LD

Background and purpose - Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) results in a more or less pronounced deformity of the proximal femur, sometimes causing impingement and early osteoarthritis. We studied early osteoarthritis after SCFE and the association with deformity and self-reported hip function, pain, and quality of life. Patients and methods - 9 women and 16 men, mean age 32 (21-50) years, 19 with unilateral and 6 with bilateral SCFE, participated. All patients had primarily been operated by pin or screw with no attempt at reposition of the slip. Hips were examined by delayed gadolinium-

Previous studies documented the use of fibular allograft in the treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) with bone graft epiphysiodesis (BGE). This study describes the results of using a 10-mm diameter premilled fibular allograft packed with demineralized bone matrix placed across the physis in an open surgical approach under image intensification. A review identified 45 cases of BGE using fibular allograft and demineralized bone matrix in 34 patients with a diagnosis of SCFE performed by a single surgeon during an 8-year period. Thirty-four cases (25 patients) had at least 1 year

BACKGROUND: While the treatment for avascular necrosis (AVN) secondary to slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) varies, it is rare that a pre-teenager will undergo a total hip arthroplasty (THA) in efforts to relieve pain and maintain function.
METHODS: A-10-year old female sustained an unstable SCFE while playing on wet grass. Unfortunately, her femoral head demonstrated significant AVN after surgical hip dislocation. All treatment options were discussed with the patient and her family. The decision of the family was to have the patient undergo a THA.
RESULTS: Approximately one year afte

We have performed corrective osteotomies for moderate or severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) using an original blade plate (BP) until 2006 and using a hybrid external fixator (EF) since 2007. We designed a comparative study of the short-term results between BP and EF devices in the treatment of proximal femoral osteotomies in SCFE. Nineteen SCFE patients (12 BP; seven EF) who underwent corrective osteotomies at our institution were included. Clinical and radiographic valuables including the operative time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative improvement of head shaft angle, an

OBJECTIVE: In bone injury, repair results in local increased vascularity and bone marrow remodeling. Characterizing the vascular and metabolic imaging patterns of the proximal femur following an intertrochanteric osteotomy may help clinicians decide proper management of the patient. Our objective was to measure Doppler sonography and scintigraphy interval changes in the proximal femur following intertrochanteric osteotomy and compare imaging and histomorphometric measurements in the late post-operative stage (6 weeks after surgery) in a rabbit model of bone injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis is a serious complication of the treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The purpose of the present study was to identify factors influencing the development of osteonecrosis.
METHODS: Two hundred and forty patients who had been treated for slipped capital femoral epiphysis between 1965 and 1999 were retrospectively evaluated. Treatment included stabilization with a spica cast or fixation with one to four pins or screws. Radiographs that had been made at the time of presentation, before and after the operation, and at consecutive follow-up examinations were r
