Erythema multiforme (EM) presents a distinct challenge in both diagnosis and management, particularly when its manifestations extend to the oral cavity. Classified into "minor" and "major" forms based on clinical presentation, EM defies gender bias and tends to affect individuals across different age groups. The complexity arises from its varied symptoms within the oral cavity, where it commonly manifests as painful, red erosive plaques known as target lesions, primarily observed on the lips and oral mucosa. These lesions may arise independently or be linked to underlying systemic or infectiou…

INTRODUCTION: Multiform exudative erythema is a rare delayed hypersensitivity reaction associated with medications. The manifestations cause … n biopsy reported: vacuolar interface dermatitis with spongiosis and parakeratosis, compatible with erythema multiforme. Epicutaneous tests were carried out with meloxicam and 30% hydroxychloroquine in water and vaseline, occluded for two days and interpreted at 48 and 96 hours, with a positive result for the latter. The diagnosis of multiform exudative erythema due …

Localised erythema multiforme (LEM) is only reported to occur in humans and not in domestic species. This case report describes the clinical and histopathological features of LEM-like reaction in a dog, confined to a region of clipper burn.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae or Mycobacterium lepromatosis that is mainly transmitted through droplets from the nose and mouth of untreated patients. Owing to the lack of specific serological markers and clinical manifestations, leprosy can be easily confused with other skin lesion-related diseases and is difficult to distinguish.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study introduces and summarises the diagnosis and treatment process of a case of leprosy misdiagnosed as erythema multiforme for a long time. A 43-year-old female was admitted to our hospi…

A 3-year-old neutered male miniature poodle dog was referred with a 19-month history of unresolved dermatological signs despite long-term tr … e apoptosis. Based on the histopathologic evaluation and clinical signs, the dog was diagnosed with erythema multiforme (EM) minor. Immunosuppressive therapy with prednisolone (1 mg/kg PO, twice daily) was initiated and had a good therapeutic effect. However, the lesion recurred after tapering the prednisolone dose (0.5 mg/kg PO, every other day). Therefore, steroid- …

We report the case of a young female adult in her early 20s, who had COVID-19 infection for 8 weeks and COVID-19 vaccination 4 weeks prior to presentation with an extensive rash associated with erythema multiforme, resembling varicella zoster on initial presentation. After initial acyclovir therapy with no improvement, systemic corticosteroid treatment dramatically resolved the patient's skin rash.

Erythema multiforme (EM) is an acute hypersensitivity reaction that affects the skin and/or mucosa. EM induced by fluconazole is extremely rare, with only 2 previously published case reports. The aims of this article are to report a rare case of severe EM induced by fluconazole in an immunocompetent patient and to review all similar published cases. A 35-year-old man presented with multiple painful superficial ulcerated lesions on the lips, superficial ulcers on the right and left ocular mucosa, and erythematous macules on the right cervical region. Moreover, multiple painful superficial ulcer…

BACKGROUND: Erythema multiforme major (EMM) is an immune-mediated mucocutaneous eruption mostly triggered by herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. A vicious circle of recurrence may be developed due to HSV reactivation and prolonged use of systemic corticosteroids to control EMM. Levamisole is an immunomodulator and has been applied to prevent relapses of recurrent HSV infection.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of levamisole in patients with recalcitrant recurrent EMM.
METHODS: We enrolled 23 patients with recurrent EMM treated with levamisole and 24 controls, and ana…

Erythema multiforme is an immune-mediated cutaneous disorder that is thought to represent a hypersensitivity reaction to infections, drugs, vaccines, malignancies, autoimmune diseases, radiation, and menstruation. Golimumab is a human IgG1-kappa anti-TNF antibody that has been approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and ulcerative colitis. We report herein a 41-year-old woman with persistent erythema multiforme, that occurred 18 months after onset of golimumab treatment of her ulcerative colitis; the latter remains in full remission over…

Rowell's syndrome (RS) is a rare presentation of lupus erythematosus (LE) with erythema multiforme-like lesions associated with antinuclear, anti-La (SS-B)/anti-Ro (SS-A) antibodies and rheumatoid factor (RF) positivity. This syndrome is suggested to be a different variant of cutaneous lupus erythematosus by some authors in literature. Here we present a 64-year-old woman with LE and a 51-year-old woman with LE and Sjögren syndrome (SS) who had erythema multiforme-like eruptions and discuss the coexistence of lupus erythematosus and erythema multiforme.

A case report is presented in which a respiratory tract infection with M. pneumoniae appears to have provoked a generalised mucocutaneous disease, described as Stevens Johnson syndrome. The patient possessed complement-fixing antibodies to M. pneumoniae to a titre of 1/2048 compared with the general population titre of 1/32. The oral mucosal lesions are described in particular and a likely pathogenesis of erythema multiforme is discussed.
