Lung Volume Reduction Coils as a Novel Bronchoscopic Treatment for Emphysema.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite regular advances in pharmacology, there remains great potential for addressing structural deficiencies, especially in emphysema. The loss of alveolar attachments to small bronchial tubes results in diffuse loss of elastic recoil and airway collapse during exhalation. This appears physiologically as hyperinflation of lung volumes with flattened diaphragms and significantly elevated residual volumes (RV) on pulmonary function testing (predicted RV > 175%).

Acoustic characteristics of voiceless bellowing typical of bovine rabies.

The use of auditory data visualization techniques was useful for distinguishing voiceless bellows of a rabid cow from the bellows of estrus-oriented cows, because rabid cows created two distinct sounds with a very short silence between inhalation and exhalation of the respiratory cycle. The auditory visualization techniques as a diagnostic tool may have the potential to serve as a basis for an Internet-based application for the early diagnosis of rabies.

Adult respiratory distress syndrome following aluminium phosphide ingestion. Report of 4 cases.

Four cases of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) following aluminium phosphide ingestion (ALP) are being reported. The dose of the intoxicant varied from 2 tablets (6.0 gm) to 3 tablets (9.0 gm). All patients had shock at admission and developed ARDS within 6 hours. The exhalation of Phosphine, (PH3) detected by positive silver nitrate paper test, was the possible noxious triggering factor in our cases. The cases are being reported because of their rare occurrence.

Volatile signature for the early diagnosis of lung cancer.

Exhaled breath contains hundreds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Several independent researchers point out that the breath of lung cancer patients shows a characteristic VOC-profile which can be considered as lung cancer signature and, thus, used for diagnosis. In this regard, the analysis of exhaled breath with gas sensor arrays is a potential non-invasive, relatively low-cost and easy technique for the early detection of lung cancer. This clinical study evaluated the gas sensor array response for the identification of the exhaled breath of lung cancer patients. This study involved 146

Metal-organic frameworks for breath-based sensors: a review.

The rapid detection and handling of diseases continue to be a priority, improving patient care and individualized treatment. Expensive equipment, the need for expert operators, and extended analytical processes often limit traditional diagnostic methods. Sensor-based approaches for efficient exhaled breath analysis offer a favorable non-invasive alternative. Patients can easily provide exhaled breath, which serves as a nearly inexhaustible diagnostic sample with minimal discomfort. "Breathomics" is an emerging research realm that deeply investigates the metabolomic constitution of exhaled brea

One Blow To Obtain Integrated Information on Metals, NO, and Metabolites in Breath Gas by Mass Spectrometry.

Human exhaled breath carries multidimensional chemical information that reflects dynamic metabolic processes, yet conventional analyses remain fragmented, targeting volatile metabolites while overlooking inorganic components. Herein, a mass spectrometry-based platform has been established to quantitatively obtain integrated rich information on metals, nitric oxide (NO), and metabolites derived from a single exhaled breath sample. For improved diagnosis, 33 exhaled metabolites, 14 metal species, and trace NO from 51 healthy volunteers and 90 lung cancer (LC) patients were successfully identifie

MASLD can cause halitosis by small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) exhibit varying degrees of halitosis. The author speculated that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) might lead to MASLD and subsequent extra-oral halitosis and aimed to test this hypothesis. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study reviewed 885 extra-oral halitosis patients. Halitosis and exhaled dimethyl sulfide (DMS) were measured by organoleptic score (OLS) (0-5) and OralChroma, respectively. SIBO and MASLD were diagnosed by hydrogen breath test and Fibroscan combined with cardiome

Association between combined allergic rhinitis and asthma syndrome in children and nitric oxide: mechanisms, clinical significance, and research progress.

Combined Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Syndrome (CARAS) in children is a chronic airway inflammatory disorder with a high prevalence in childhood. In recent years, a growing body of studies has identified a close association between fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and nasal exhaled nitric oxide (nNO) and the pathogenesis of CARAS in children. By synthesizing relevant literature retrieved from the PubMed database (1985-2025), this article provides an in-depth analysis of the roles of the NO/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signaling pathway, nitrosative stress, and organelle injury i

Molecular breath analysis identifies the breathprint of renal failure.

Many uremic solutes retained in chronic kidney disease are volatile, and can be detected by breath testing. We compared the exhaled breath of subjects with end stage renal disease (ESRD) to healthy volunteers to identify volatile compounds that can serve as a potential breathprint for renal failure. We analyzed the exhaled breath of 86 ESRD subjects and 25 healthy volunteers using selected-ion flow-tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). Using a random forests classification model, we identified three known volatiles (2-propanol, ammonia, acetaldehyde) and two unknown volatiles ([Formula: see text]

Distal Airway Inflammation Is Linked to Small Airway Dysfunction in Asthma.

Background/Objectives: Airway inflammation and small airway dysfunction (SAD) are key features of asthma. Inflammation can be assessed by blood eosinophil count (Eos) and exhaled nitric oxide (NO) parameters, including fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), bronchial NO flux (J'awNO), and alveolar NO concentration (CANO), the latter reflecting distal airway inflammation. We aimed to evaluate the association between Eos and the degree of airway inflammation as specified by exhaled NO parameters and to assess the relationships between exhaled NO parameters and small airway dysfunction using spi

Does the fungus among us increase trap fidelity? Mycelium carbon dioxide generators for mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) traps in two ecoregions of the United States.

Mosquito control programs deploy mosquito traps for surveillance and targeting of vector mosquitoes. The primary attractant in these traps is generally carbon dioxide (CO2), which acts as a powerful long-distance lure. Historically, dry ice and compressed gas have been accessible as lures, but they may exhibit logistical hardships (storage, safety, equipment, calibration, consistency, etc.). Additionally, the aforementioned standards can be inaccessible in remote or low-resource environments. Microbial lures have often been proposed to bridge this gap, but prior options, such as yeast, have pr

Respiratory and Cardiac Phase Coupling With Voluntary Actions Across Motor Tasks.

Bodily rhythms such as breathing and heartbeat influence perception and motor processes. Recent studies have indicated that breathing phases, particularly exhalation, synchronize with voluntary actions, potentially reflecting a general influence on motor intention. However, this effect might depend on the specific effector and movement direction. This study aimed to investigate (i) respiratory synchronization across different voluntary motor tasks, (ii) the interaction between stimulus-locked and action-locked respiratory coupling, and (iii) cardiac synchronization with voluntary actions. A to…
