Effect of Delonix regia (Boj. Ex Hook.) Raf. stem bark extract against experimentally induced ulcers in rats.

Delonix regia, commonly called Flame Tree or Flamboyant (locally, Gul Mohor) is a common tree traditionally used to treat various diseases like gastric problems, body pain, rheumatic pains of joints and wound healing. Here, we carried out biological profiling of Delonix regia as antiulcer agent. Antiulcer activity of the ethanol extract from stem bark was evaluated on pylorus ligation and indomethacin induced ulcer in Wistar albino rats. Ethanol extract from stem bark of D.regia was administered at the doses 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg/day, p.o. for 7 days. Ulcer index, gastric pH, volume, free aci

PEG modification of Amorfrutin B from Amorpha fructicosa increases gastric absorption, circulation half-life and glucose uptake by T3T-L1 adipocytes.

Through a simple PEG-conjugation of the natural product Amorfrutin B, we enhanced its pharmacokinetic profile. The PEGylated molecule displayed significantly improved gastrointestinal absorption (p<0.05) and had a longer systemic circulation life (p<0.05). Oral glucose tolerance study showed PEGylated Amorfrutin B displayed longer protection against oral glucose load compared to Amorfrutin B (p<0.05). It also showed significant improvement in glucose uptake in-vitro by T3T-L1 adipocytes (p<0.05). The PEGylated molecule also showed reduced propensity of crossing the blood brain barrier and accu

Vatairea macrocarpa lectin (VML) induces depressive-like behavior and expression of neuroinflammatory markers in mice.

Lectins are proteins capable of reversible binding to the carbohydrates in glycoconjugates that can regulate many physiological and pathological events. Galectin-1, a β-galactoside-binding lectin, is expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) and exhibits neuroprotective functions. Additionally, lectins isolated from plants have demonstrated beneficial action in the CNS. One example is a lectin with mannose-glucose affinity purified from Canavalia brasiliensis seeds, ConBr, which displays neuroprotective and antidepressant activity. On the other hand, the effects of the galactose-binding le

Antidiarrhoeal and antimicrobial activity of Calpurnia aurea leaf extract.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, Calpurnia aurea is used for the treatment of syphilis, malaria, rabies, diabetes, hypertension, diarrhoea, leishmaniasis, trachoma, elephantiasis, fungal diseases and different swellings. However, despite its traditional usage as an antidiarrhoeal and antimicrobial agent, there is limited or no information regarding its effectiveness and mode of action in diarrhoea which may be caused by Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. Hence, we evaluated the 80% methanol (MeOH) extract of dried and powdered leaves of C. aurea for its an

Effects of Hedysari polysaccharides on regeneration and function recovery following peripheral nerve injury in rats.

It has been demonstrated that aqueous extract of Radix Hedysari Prescription and modified Radix Hedysari Prescription could improve the regeneration of injured peripheral nerve. Radix Hedysari is a main component in these two formulas. We hypothesized that Hedysari polysaccharides (HPS), a main active ingredient, could also enhance peripheral nerve regeneration after nerve injury in adult animals. In the present study, we examined the effects of HPS on sciatic nerve regeneration for 6 weeks following clamping in rats (administrated orally of 2 ml HPS liquid daily, 0.25 g/ml). The results showe

Immunologic and clinical responses to parenteral immunotherapy in peanut anaphylaxis--a study using IgE and IgG4 immunoblot monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Specific desensitisation to food allergens, which produce anaphylaxis after ingestion, has not been considered as a treatment for food allergy until recently. The purpose of this study was to assess if a parenteral immunotherapy program, using a partially characterised crude peanut extract, could induce a state of immunological tolerance in a patient who exhibited anaphylaxis, asthma and urticaria on exposure to peanut and other legumes. A further aim was to measure the serum antibody responses to the immunotherapy. METHODS AND RESULTS: We report the successful desensitisation tow

The effect of nitrogen nutrition on cluster root formation and proton extrusion by Lupinus albus.

Nitrogen nutrition can influence cluster root formation in many wild species, but the effect of N form on cluster root formation and root exudation by white lupin is not known. In a solution culture study, we examined the effect of N nutrition (ammonium, nitrate, both or N2 fixation) on cluster root formation and H+ extrusion by white lupin plants under deficient and adequate P supply. The number of cluster roots increased greatly when plants were supplied with I microM P compared with 50 microM P, the increase being 7.8-fold for plants treated with (NH4)2SO4, 3-fold for plants treated with KN

Inhibitory and excitatory amino acids in cerebrospinal fluid of neurolathyrism patients, a highly prevalent motorneurone disease.

Neurolathyrism is caused by overconsumption of seeds containing 3-N-oxalyl-L-2,3-diaminopropanoic acid (beta-ODAP). Amino acids levels of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were studied in 50 patients with neurolathyrism and 12 healthy volunteers. The levels of excitatory amino acids glutamate and aspartate were 281% and 71% respectively of control values. The concentration of inhibitory amino acids glycine and taurine were 277% and 198% respectively of the levels in CSF from control individuals. There was a significant correlation between the level of glycine and the duration of the disease. We also f

Light-regulated, tissue-specific immunophilins in a higher plant.

In addition to their application in organ transplantation, immunosuppressive drugs are valuable tools for studying signal transduction in eukaryotic cells. Using affinity chromatography, we have purified immunosuppressive drug receptors (immunophilins) from fava bean. Proteins belonging to both major classes of the immunophilin family identified from animal sources [FK506- and rapamycin-binding proteins (FKBPs) and cyclophilins] were present in this higher plant. FKBP13, the most abundant FKBP family member in leaf tissues, was not detected in root tissues, whereas other FKBPs were present in
