BACKGROUND: Little is known about the national population-based incidence rates of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and related epidemiological profiles in Asian countries. We plastic surgeons always face and treat this complicated disease in the first line at the hospital.
METHODS: Using Taiwan's National Health Insurance inpatient claims data from 2005 through 2010, we investigated the national annual incidence rate of NF by sex, age, year, month, beneficiary category, and region.
RESULTS: The overall average annual incidence rate (cases per 100,000 population) of those 6 years of inpatients wit

We report a case diagnosed as both necrotizing fasciitis and frostbite of the male external genetalia. The patient was a 58-year-old man with diabetes mellitus. He was referred to our hospital with swelling of his penis and icing there for 3 weeks. We diagnosed his condition as necrotizing fasciitis of the external genitalia and decided to perform an emergency operation. Although we consulted plastic surgeons about debridement of a large area, they considered that there was no necessity for it because the scrotum, perineum and abdominal wall were frostbitten. The final clinical diagnosis was n

We present a first report of necrotizing fasciitis of the abdominal wall in a 23-day-of-age, former 32-week-gestation premature infant. She was successfully treated with antibiotics without the need for initial debridement. After reviewing the etiology of necrotizing fasciitis, we discuss the unique aspects of this case, including the noninvasive approach to initial treatment, which we consider significantly contributed to her survival.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a group of relatively rare infections, usually caused by two or more pathogens. It affects the skin and subcutaneous tissues of lower and upper limbs, perineal area (Fournier's gangrene), and the abdominal wall. Early diagnosis and aggressive surgical management are of high significance for the management of this potentially lethal disease.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study in patients who presented, during the last decade, at four University Surgical Departments in the area of Athens, Greece, with an admission diagnosis of NF. Demographic,

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), a necrotizing infection of the soft tissue, is a medical emergency usually occurring in the lower extremities and abdominal regions and often difficult to diagnose promptly.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: This case report looks at one atypical presentation of NF with the unusual location of the vulva and no known associated comorbidities or risk factors.
DISCUSSION: Diagnosing this patient was particularly difficult due to the inconsistent clinical, laboratory and imaging findings. The CT scans and WBC count were indicative of NF, but the LRINEC score was not

CASE: Disseminated cryptococcosis is a well-recognized condition among HIV patients, but it also occurs in non-HIV patients. Necrotizing fasciitis caused by cryptococcus is rare. An 81-year-old man who had received steroid therapy presented with erythema and pain in his right thigh. After the rapid progression of symptoms and a failure to respond to antibiotic therapy, a clinical diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis was made. We performed debridement, and yeasts were detected using a Gram stain of the fascia. We treated the patient with liposomal amphotericin B. On day 3, he developed meningitis

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe bacterial necrotic infection that affects the skin and soft tissues.
OBSERVATION: We report a rare observation of necrotizing fasciitis located at the thoracic wall. The management requires an appropriate antibiotherapy preceding a large necrosectomy taking all the affected areas, thus preparing the underlying tissues for a possible skin graft.
CONCLUSION: Through these two observations and a literature review, we describe the medical and surgical management of necrotizing fasciitis.

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare and rapidly progressing bacterial infection of soft tissues. Bacterial toxins cause local tissue damage and necrosis, as well as blunt immune system responses. A self-propagating cycle of bacterial invasion, toxin release and tissue destruction can continue until substantial amounts of tissue become necrotic. Neutralization of bacterial toxins should improve the results.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pure hypochlorous acid (HOCl) (0.01% w/v) with no sodium hypochlorite impurity in saline pH 4-5, which was recently shown to both eradicate bacteria an

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe bacterial infection involving fascia and subcutaneous tissue. It generally affects upper or lower extremities unilaterally, and there are few reports of bilateral-extremity NF. Here, we report a case of a 43-year-old male with type 1 diabetes who had NF on the left foot and subsequently developed NF on the other foot 1 week later. The patient survived with antimicrobial therapy and bilateral below-knee amputation. As group B streptococcus (GBS) was isolated by blood culture and culture of excised tissues of both feet, bilateral GBS NF of the foot was diag

Deep fascial space infections of the neck are most frequently odontogenic in origin. We describe a case of odontogenic infection of the mandible which extended to the lateral pharyngeal space and resulted in a severe life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis of the neck. A 69-year-old nondiabetic male complained of dysphagia and a severe toothache of the lower left molar and was transported to the emergency ward. A CT scan revealed swelling of the peritonsillar, lateral pharyngeal and masticator space with narrowing of the airway of the middle pharynx. The patient underwent a tracheotomy with sur

Azacitidine is a novel agent for treating myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). It has a relatively safe toxicity profile with very few reported skin toxicities. Patients with MDS were prone to get severe infections, especially via respiratory tract, urinary system, and bloodstream. However, necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a relatively rare event in patients with MDS, and it is hard to diagnose early. Here, we report two MDS cases that developed NF in lower extremities while receiving azacitidine treatment. One of them survives after emergent fasciotomy along with the administration of broad-spectrum

OBJECTIVE: Necrotizing fasciitis in the cervical region is a rare entity, characterized by a fulminant infection that causes extensive necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and fascial planes, with high mortality and morbidity rates. The origin is generally odontogenic or pharyngeal, involving a mixed flora of microorganisms. Descending infection and mediastinal involvement are usually associated and are the main complications. The aim of the present study was to review the cases treated in our department and analyze diagnosis and treatment, supplementing the understanding of the disease.

Klebsiella pneumoniae necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection in regions outside of Asia. Here, we present a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the leg caused by K. pneumoniae in a 92-year-old French woman hospitalized in a geriatric rehabilitation unit. The patient initially presented with dermohypodermitis of the leg that developed from a dirty wound following a fall. A few hours later, this painful injury extended to the entire lower limb, with purplish discoloration of the skin, bullae, and necrosis. Septic shock rapidly appeared and the patient died 9 hours after the onset of symptoms. Th

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rarely seen, life-threatening soft tissue infection characterized by progressive necrosis of skin, subcutaneous tissues and fasciae. Herein, we present a case of NF in a patient with bullous pemphigoid. A 78-year-old female patient was admitted with the left leg pain, swelling, redness and blistering. Streptococcus pyogenes was isolated from the wound culture. In the skin biopsy and the left leg magnetic resonance imaging, signs of NF were observed. The diagnosis of NF was considered. Then, urgent surgical debridement was performed by the department of plastic s

Primary necrotizing fasciitis of the breast is extremely rare. We describe a case of a 51-year-old diabetic smoker who presented with primary necrotizing fasciitis of the breast, with signs of severe systemic sepsis. She required intravenous antibiotics, radical emergency surgery, intensive care treatment and inotropic support. After daily wound inspections and changes of dressings, the wound was amenable to delayed primary closure on day 6. We describe this case in detail and review the literature on this extremely rare, but potentially fatal, infection.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, life-threatening infection most commonly seen in patients with diabetes mellitus, intravenous drug abuse, and immunocompromised conditions. The extremities are the primary sites of involvement in as many as two thirds of the cases. In a significant proportion of patients, the extremities are involved as a result of trauma, needle puncture or extravasation of drugs. The infection is usually polymicrobial. Treatment involves broad-spectrum antibiotics and multiple surgical debridements or amputation. We present a patient with necrotizing fasciitis of the upper li

Necrotizing soft-tissue infection (NSTI) is a bacterial infection with necrosis of the cutaneous, subcutaneous tissue and fascia with sparing of the underlying muscle. The most frequent initiating factor reported, for necrotizing fasciitis, in the head and neck region is a primary odontogenic infection or postextraction infection, abrasion, and laceration of the face or scalp. Necrotizing fasciitis can progress rapidly to systemic toxicity and even death if not promptly diagnosed and treated. If the patient has any risk factors, this can worsen the prognosis. In this study, 2 cases of NSTI wit
