Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend: food and diet as instigators of bizarre and disturbing dreams.

In the early 1900s, the Dream of the Rarebit Fiend comic strip conveyed how the spicy cheese dish Welsh rarebit leads to bizarre and disturbing dreams. Today, the perception that foods disturb dreaming persists. But apart from case studies, some exploratory surveys, and a few lab studies on how hunger affects dreaming, there is little empirical evidence addressing this topic. The present study examines three aspects of the food/dreaming relationship; it attempts to: (1) assess the prevalence of the perception of food-dependent dreaming and the types of foods most commonly blamed; (2) determine

Comparison of binge-eating disorder and food addiction.

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, binge-eating disorder (BED) is classified as episodes of binge eating while not being hungry, eating too fast until feeling uncomfortably full, or eating in solitude with feelings of shame and disgust after eating, without compensatory mechanisms. The controversial disorder food addiction (FA) is characterized by overconsumption, cravings, failure to cut down on amounts of food, and withdrawal and tolerance to overeating. In this narrative review, we aimed to comprehensively characterize and compare BED and FA. We sea

Prolonged water-only fasting in the management of low-grade follicular lymphoma: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Follicular lymphoma typically follows an indolent and relapsing course often requiring several treatment cycles to achieve remission. Some patients opt to use complementary and alternative therapies particularly when observation is a treatment option. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a case series of three patients, a 50-year-old, White, Hispanic female, 56-year-old, White, non-Hispanic male, and 49-year-old, White, non-Hispanic male, who elected to undergo one or more prolonged water-only fasting and refeeding interventions to manage low to intermediate grade follicular lymphom

Enzymatic prodrug degradation in the fasted and fed small intestine: In vitro studies and interindividual variability in human aspirates.

The aim of the current study was (1) to develop an automation-based protocol for in vitro assessment of enzymatic drug stability at fasted- and fed-state intestinal conditions, (2) to characterize the inter-individual variability of drug degradation in fasted- and fed-state human intestinal fluids, and (3) to compare the obtained in vitro results to drug degradation in human intestinal fluids by taking variability into account. In human intestinal fluids, drug degradation displayed large inter-individual variability, with coefficients of variance generally ranging between 30 and 70 %. The effe

Effect of cholecystokinin on myoelectric activity of small bowel of the dog.

The effect of cholecystokinin on the myoelectric activity of the small intestine was determined in conscious dogs. Six animals were implanted with electrodes along the small intestine, and a cannula was placed in the stomach. A second cannula was inserted into the duodenum in three animals, and a pancreatic fistula was prepared in three animals. Recordings were made in the fasted state, during the intravenous infusion of either saline or cholecystokinin-octapeptide (CCK-OP), during the intraduodenal infusion of either saline or L-tryptophan, and during the fed state. CCK-OP disrupted the faste

A Novel BODIPY-Derived Fluorescent Sensor for Sulfite Monitoring.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is commonly employed as an antioxidant and preservative in food processing, but excessive intake of SO2 can pose significant health risks. Therefore, accurate detection of sulfite content in food is crucial for ensuring food quality and safety. A novel fluorescent probe, BODIPY-Y, composed of a BODIPY derivative and an ethyl cyanoacetate group linked by a carbon-carbon double bond, was synthesized for detecting sulfur dioxide derivatives. When the BODIPY-Y probe interacts with SO32-, the probe exhibits enhanced fluorescence at 514 nm. Spectrometric experiments show that th

Ultra-processed foods consumption and risk of age-related eye diseases: a prospective cohort study with UK biobank.

PURPOSE: Consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) has been associated with increased risks of various age-related diseases. However, the potential association between UPF consumption and age-related eye diseases (AREDs) remains unclear. We aim to assess the associations between consumption of UPF and risk of AREDs including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract and glaucoma. METHODS: We included 156,232 individuals aged 50 or older, who were free from AREDs from UK biobank study. Dietary intake data were collected using 24-h dietary assessments. UPF is defined according to the NO

Relationship of plasma gastrin immunoreactivity and gastroesophageal sphincter pressure in clinically normal dogs and in dogs with previous gastric dilatation-volvulus.

Fasting and postprandial gastroesophageal sphincter pressure (GESP) and plasma gastrin immunoreactivity were measured in 6 dogs from 9 through 60 months after treatment for and recovery from gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). The GESP was not significantly increased in these dogs, compared with that in clinically normal dogs in either the fasting or postprandial state. Corresponding plasma gastrin immunoreactivity was not significantly increased in dogs of the GDV-recovered group, compared with that in clinically normal dogs (fasting or postprandial). An exaggerated increase in GESP in respons

A multicompartment stomach physiologically-based pharmacokinetic model capturing gastric reacidification can improve food effect predictions of weak bases.

Various changes within the gastrointestinal tract following meal intake may significantly impact oral drug absorption. Physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models are often used to perform early predictions of food effects on oral absorption. However, the stomach compartment within these physiological models does not wholly reflect physiology of the fed state. The current approach where the stomach compartment is fixed at pH 5 overlooks the changing gastric pH profile over time after food consumption. We suggest the integration of a multicompartment stomach that represents the various

Potential of underutilized millets as Nutri-cereal: an overview.

In this current scenario with changing food habits, escalating population and unrestricted use of natural resources, there are lacking of resources to provide nutritious food to all. Natural plant resources are fast depleting and need to explore new alternatives. Besides the staple rice and wheat; lots of underutilized crops are being consumed that are having great potential to replace the staple crops. Millets are one of the major underutilized crops with a Nutri-cereal potential. Millets are highly nutritive, non-acid-forming, gluten-free and having dietary properties. Despite the fact that

Effect of fasting on the pattern of urinary arsenic excretion.

Millions of people in some of the poorest regions of the world are exposed to high levels of arsenic through drinking contaminated water. It has been reported that development of cancer caused by arsenic exposure in such populations is dependent on dietary and nutritional factors which can modulate arsenic metabolism. Many people in arsenic exposed regions of Bangladesh and India practice fasting for at least one month every year when they refrain from consumption of food and fluid during daylight hours. How such practices may modulate arsenic metabolism has not been previously investigated. T

Effects of Cinnamon Powder on Glucose Metabolism in Diabetic Mice and the Molecular Mechanisms.

The liver is the primary organ regulating glucose metabolism. In our recent study, cinnamon improved liver function in diabetic mice. However, it is not clear whether cinnamon can reduce the glycemia of diabetic animals by regulating liver glucose metabolism. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypoglycemic mechanism of cinnamon powder (CP) from the perspective of regulating liver glucose metabolism. To achieve this, different doses of CP (200, 400, or 800 mg/kg body weight) were given to diabetic mice by gavage once per day for 8 weeks. These mice were compared with healthy contr

Dietary Risk Factors and Eating Behaviors in Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).

Dietary risk factors play a fundamental role in the prevention and progression of atherosclerosis and PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease). The impact of nutrition, however, defined as the process of taking in food and using it for growth, metabolism and repair, remains undefined with regard to PAD. This article describes the interplay between nutrition and the development/progression of PAD. We reviewed 688 articles, including key articles, narrative and systematic reviews, meta-analyses and clinical studies. We analyzed the interaction between nutrition and PAD predictors, and subsequently crea

Continuous glucose monitoring assessment in patients suffering from anorexia nervosa reveals chronic prolonged mild hypoglycemia all over the nycthemeron.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterised by voluntary dietary restriction leading to severe undernutrition. Hypoglycaemia is mostly described through severe case reports and is always evaluated by fasting or post-meal blood glucose, showing nothing about hypoglycaemia's length or duration. The interest of continuous interstitial glucose monitoring (CGM), largely used in diabetes mellitus, has never been evaluated in AN patients. METHOD: Glycaemia cycles in AN patients were assessed using CGM over 5 days and then analysed according to food intake. RESULTS: Mean gly
