fMRI of parents of children with Asperger Syndrome: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: People with autism or Asperger Syndrome (AS) show altered patterns of brain activity during visual search and emotion recognitio … n on brain function. An ordinal ANOVA also tested for regions of brain activity where females>males>fathers=mothers, to test for parental hyper-masculinization. RESULTS ON EFT TASK: Female controls showed more activity in extrastriate cortex than male controls, and both mothers and fathers showed even less activity in this area than sex-matched controls. …

Exposure to paternal alcoholism does not predict development of alcohol-use disorders in offspring: evidence from an offspring-of-twins study.

OBJECTIVE: Using an offspring-of-twins design, we tested the hypothesis that exposure to paternal alcoholism during the child's first 12 years will increase offspring risk for subsequent alcohol-use disorders (AUD). METHOD: Structured psychiatric interviews assessed history of psychiatric and substance-use disorders in Vietnam Era Twin Registry fathers (n = 512), their offspring (n = 877), and mothers of the offspring (n = 507). Exposure was defined as the fathers' endorsement of any Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), Fourth Edition, AUD symptom, according to the Lif…

Resilience and difficulties of parents of children with a cleft lip and palate.

AIM: The present study explored the differences in emotional difficulties and resilience between fathers and mothers of a child with a cleft lip and palate. METHODS: Married couples were recruited who were accompanying their child with a cleft lip and palate (<12 years old) on regular visits to an outpatient clinic in a Japanese hospital. The participants were distributed an anonymous questionnaire that included items regarding emotional difficulties with the cleft lip and palate and a scale to measure resilience when caring for the children. In the data analysis, the paired t-test was used t…

Associations between maternal and paternal depressive symptoms and early child behavior problems: Testing a mutually adjusted prospective longitudinal model.

BACKGROUND: While there is substantial empirical work on maternal depression, less is known about how mothers' and fathers' depressive symptoms compare in their association with child behavior problems in early childhood. In particular, few studies have examined unique relationships in the postpartum period by controlling for the other parent, or looked at longitudinal change in either parent's depressive symptoms across the first living years as a predictor of child problems. METHODS: We examined depressive symptoms in parents at 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 months following childbirth, and child be…

Parents' Evaluations of Their Children's Dysphonia: The Mamas and the Papas.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of a Hebrew translation of the Pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI). It also examined differences between mothers and fathers in evaluating their child's dysphonia. STUDY DESIGN: Observational design. METHODS: The pVHI was first translated and adapted to Hebrew. The translated version was, then, administered to a group of 141 parents of children aged younger than 14 years. Fifty-eight parents had a dysphonic child, and 83 had a nondysphonic child. Based on the parents' responses to the pVHI, statistical analyses were perf…

Factors modifying the risk of IDDM in offspring of an IDDM parent.

Offspring of mothers with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) have a much lower risk of IDDM than do offspring of diabetic fathers, and this risk is particularly low for offspring born to diabetic mothers over the age of 25 years. To determine whether increasing maternal age also protects the offspring of IDDM fathers from IDDM, we surveyed 367 IDDM fathers (IDDM onset before age 35) who first came to the Joslin Clinic (Boston, MA) between 1945 and 1969. Of the 840 offspring of these men, IDDM developed in 28 before the age of 20, giving a cumulative risk of 5.1 +/- 1.0% (means +/- SE).…

A gendered network analysis of somatic, psychological, and healthcare utilization patterns among parents of service members in wartime.

INTRODUCTION: Parents of actively serving soldiers experience sustained stress that affects psychological, somatic, and behavioral health, yet the interrelations among these domains and gender differences are understudied. METHODS: We studied 402 Israeli parents (201 mothers, 201 fathers from unrelated households) of sons/daughters aged 18-27 serving in regular or reserve duty during wartime, recruited via a national online panel (data collected in August 2025). Participants completed self-report questionnaires related to psychological, somatic, and behavioral health domains. Network analysis…

The Effects of Extended Parental Benefits on Parents' Employment and Earnings in Canada.

Paid parental benefits, with individually earmarked time for mothers and fathers, aim to promote gender equality in labor force participation, wages, and childcare. The Canadian province of Québec expanded parental benefits over and above the federal policy in 2006 with the Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP), which introduced paid paternity leave and lower eligibility criteria as its key features. This policy aimed to increase gender equality by encouraging fathers to use parental benefits and expanding coverage to low-income parents. Using Canadian administrative data and exploiting the po…

Trajectories of Maternal and Paternal Internalizing Symptoms from Pregnancy to 2 Years Postpartum: Identifying Modifiable Risk and Protective Factors.

There is an increased risk for depression and anxiety across the perinatal period (i.e., spanning pregnancy and the first year postpartum); however, limited research has examined elevations in core negative affectivity underlying internalizing disorders more broadly. The current study sought to characterize trajectories of core internalizing problems among both mothers and fathers across the perinatal period and explored whether modifiable risk and protective factors buffered risk for elevated symptoms during this key developmental transition. A community sample of mixed-sex couples (N = 159) …

Risk factors of paternal perinatal depression during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan.

PURPOSE: The study aims to investigate risk factors of paternal perinatal depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted an online cross-sectional study of 473 prenatal fathers and 1246 postnatal fathers in August 2021. We applied a modified Poisson regression to estimate relative risk ratios of possible factors for paternal perinatal depression (measured by Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale), sequentially introducing the following factors into the model: individual factors, interpersonal factors, obstetric/pediatric factors, and service utilization factors. RESULTS: Prena…

Sad dads: paternal postpartum depression.

The postpartum period is associated with many adjustments to fathers that pose risks for depression. Estimates of the prevalence of paternal postpartum depression (PPD) in the first two months postpartum vary in the postpartum period from 4 to 25 percent. Paternal PPD has high comorbidity with maternal PPD and might also be associated with other postpartum psychiatric disorders. Studies so far have only used diagnostic criteria for maternal PPD to investigate paternal PPD, so there is an urgent need to study the validity of these scales for men and develop accurate diagnostic tools for paterna…

Beyond targeting women: Intrahousehold contexts and the effectiveness of food vouchers.

Many transfer programs target women based on evidence that mothers are more likely than fathers to allocate resources toward child welfare. However, findings on gendered impacts remain mixed-likely because parental knowledge, preferences, and household decision-making roles differ across contexts. In this study, we experimentally vary the intrahousehold informational context itself through a randomized controlled trial in rural Ethiopia. Specifically, employing a factorial design, we cross-randomize two key dimensions: (1) which parent receives nutrition behavior change communication (BCC) - n…

Predictors of Anxiety in Romanian Generation Z Teenagers.

Adolescence is a very complex period of life, full of challenges, and explorations that young people have to face on the path to becoming adults. In adolescence, specific deviations from the everyday lifestyle, as well as emotional failures or imbalances, may also occur. When things tend to become more and more unclear, adolescents come to directly face some form of anxiety. The present study concerns the relationship of Romanian adolescents with their fathers from the perspective of anxiety issues. For this, an anonymous questionnaire was applied using a sample of availability of 558 teenager…

Maternal and paternal overprotection of children born preterm: Relations to child and parental factors.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlates of observed overprotective behaviors of mothers and fathers of preterm-born preschoolers. Participants included 85 children born prematurely (gestational age <37 weeks) and their parents, assessed when children were 12, 24, and 42 months old. Observed overprotection was measured through the standardized observation of a parent-child interaction. The examined correlates included parent-reported perception of their protective behavior, parental gender, child neonatal risk, child development, parent-reported perception of child vulnerabi…

This study was designed to analyse the home literacy experiences and socio-cultural characteristics associated with the subtypes of reading disability. For this purpose, we used a reading level match design and we selected four samples of families as a function of their children's reading profile: a group of parents (15 fathers and 16 mothers) whose children had a profile of surface dyslexia (DSP); a second group of parents (6 fathers and 6 mothers) whose children had a profile of phonological dyslexia (DFP); a third group of parents (38 fathers and 41 mothers) whose children were matched in a…

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory profiles of Vietnam combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder and their children.

Forty children of 28 fathers who are Vietnam veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Each of the fathers had at least one elevated clinical scale. Fathers averaged eight elevated clinical scales, and compared to more recent norms, fathers averaged seven elevated clinical scales. Seventy-eight percent of the children had at least one clinically elevated scale (averaging three elevated clinical scales). Compared to contemporary normal adolescents and adults, 65% of children had at least one clinically elevated scale (still ave…

The teratogenicity of hydantoins and barbiturates in humans, with considerations on the etiology of malformations and cerebral disturbances in the children of epileptic parents.

A total of 194 children of epileptic mothers and 71 children of epileptic fathers were examined for mental retardation, neurologic disturbances, major malformations, and acrofacial dysmorphias typical for hydantoin-barbiturate embryopathy (HB-E). HB-E was observed in nearly 7% of the children of mothers on anticonvulsants during pregnancy. Barbiturates and/or primidone were observed to induce the same dysmorphic features as hydantoins. The teratogenic potential of hydantoins may be slightly increased in combination with barbiturates/primidone. Neither the 71 children of epileptic fathers nor t…
