AIM: This review aimed to assess the published results of posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) for faecal incontinence.
METHOD: A search was performed of PubMed, MEDLINE and Embase to identify studies describing the clinical outcome of PTNS for faecal incontinence.
RESULTS: Thirteen studies were identified. These described the outcome of PTNS for faecal incontinence in 273 patients. Four described transcutaneous PTNS, eight percutaneous PTNS and one compared both methods of PTNS with a sham transcutaneous group. One investigated patients with faecal incontinence and spinal cord injury a

PURPOSE: Faecal incontinence is a common and important multifactorial disorder with a range of treatment options. Over the last two decades, neuromodulation via sacral nerve stimulators has been shown to be effective for both faecal and urinary incontinence, although associated with complications. Peripheral neuromodulation, via the posterior tibial nerve, is widely used in urinary incontinence; however, its use in faecal incontinence, whilst evolving is limited to eight small heterogeneous studies.
REVIEW: These eight studies are discussed in the context of the methodology and underlying neu

A 67-year-old male was referred to our hospital with septicemia from necrotizing fasciitis of the genitalia of unknown origin. He had a history of diabetes and cerebral infarction. Extensive debridement of necrotizing tissue was performed over an area extending from the lower abdomen to the light inguinal, scrotal and perianal regions. At a suitable point,Flexi-Seal was applied to the wound as a preventive measure against infection. There was no contamination of perianal wounds, allowing them to be closed without infection. The Flexi-Seal was successfully removed after around 3 weeks. This is th

Faecal incontinence is a common problem. Conservative measures are effective in a significant proportion of patients. Failure of conservative management has until recently meant recourse to surgical intervention. Surgical treatment is often associated with disappointing results. Recently, sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) has been developed as a minimally invasive, effective technique for idiopathic and acquired faecal incontinence. The technique uses chronic low-level electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves, or neuromodulation, to produce a clinically beneficial effect on the distal colon an

BACKGROUND: Reports of the use of injectable bulking agents for faecal incontinence are currently confined to a small number of pilot studies. However, the use of these agents is rapidly becoming widespread based on this limited knowledge.
METHODS: This review provides an overview of the products available and the methods of delivery based on the pilot studies, selected articles reporting experience of these agents in urology, plastic surgery and laryngology, and some animal studies.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Although bulking agents have been used to treat urinary incontinence for over four d

PURPOSE: This study investigated the prevalence of bowel dysfunction and associated factors after pull-through surgery.
METHODS: The medical records of children under 18 years old diagnosed with Hirschsprung disease (HD) based on histopathology between 2004 and 2022 were reviewed. Bowel dysfunction after pull-through surgery was categorized into Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC), constipation, and fecal incontinence.
RESULTS: Among 97 children diagnosed with HD, the median age at presentation was 3 (2-15) days (84.54% male). The clinical manifestations included abdominal distensio…

Background Intrasphincteric injection of botulinum toxin is an alternative treatment for anal fissures, which may present less risk of fecal incontinence than more invasive procedures, such as lateral internal sphincterotomy. The aim is to compare cure and complication rates between these two treatments. Methods We conducted a retrospective audit of patients who underwent treatment of anal fissures with intrasphincteric botulinum toxin or lateral internal sphincterotomy from 2016 to 2020 at the Colorectal Surgery Unit of Monash Health, Melbourne, Australia, excluding those who had previously h…
