Dissociation of consummatory and vocal components of feeding in squirrel monkeys treated with benzodiazepines and alcohol.

The primary aim of the current experiments was to develop methods that engender vocalizations associated with positive social situations comprising affiliative behavior and feeding that could be quantified under controlled laboratory conditions and were sensitive to anxiolytic drugs. Classical conditioning procedures were used to elicit vocalizations during presentation of stimulus lights (i.e., CS condition) previously paired with either preferred foods (e.g., grapes, peanuts, bananas) or standard foods (e.g., monkey chow) as well as during presentation of both food types (i.e., UCS condition

Validation of the RumiWatch Converter V0.7.4.5 classification accuracy for the automatic monitoring of behavioural characteristics in dairy cows.

The objective of the present study was to validate the accuracy of algorithms, implemented in the currently available RumiWatch Converter (RWC) version V0.7.4.5 of the RumiWatch System (RWS), for the classification of behavioural characteristics from jaw and head movements which are monitored by a noseband halter comprising a pressure sensor and a triaxial accelerometer. The accurate classification of behavioural characteristics in different time resolutions is critical for the usage of the RWS for scientific and practical purposes as chewing behaviour provides essential indicators for the ass

Animal-borne acoustic transceivers reveal patterns of at-sea associations in an upper-trophic level predator.

Satellite telemetry data have substantially increased our understanding of habitat use and foraging behaviour of upper-trophic marine predators, but fall short of providing an understanding of their social behaviour. We sought to determine whether novel acoustic and archival GPS data could be used to examine at-sea associations among grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) during the fall foraging period. Fifteen grey seals from Sable Island, Canada were deployed with Vemco Mobile Transceivers and Satellite-GPS transmitters in October 2009, 13 of which were recaptured and units retrieved 79 ± 2.3 days

Intensity control during target approach in echolocating bats; stereotypical sensori-motor behaviour in Daubenton's bats, Myotis daubentonii.

When approaching a prey target, bats have been found to decrease the intensity of their emitted echolocation pulses, called intensity compensation. In this paper we examine whether intensity compensation in the echolocation of bats is flexible or stereotyped. We recorded the echolocation calls of Daubenton's bats (Myotis daubentonii) while the animals attacked targets of different dimensions. Myotis daubentonii reduced the peak sound pressure level emitted by about 4dB for each halving of distance, irrespective of the target presented (mealworms and two different sizes of spheres). The absolut

Adolescent social isolation and food restriction impairs feeding in female mice.

Preclinical animal models of eating disorders show a clear relationship between stress in the adolescent period and the development of dysfunctional coping strategies, including disordered eating. Much of this work, however, has focused on male mice despite the fact that eating disorders are predominantly observed in women. To this end, we assessed the impact of social isolation and food deprivation in adolescent female mice upon feeding and other coping behaviors. We found that social isolation, together with food restriction, caused alterations in activity levels and feeding consistent with

Complete NMR chemical shift assignments of odorant binding protein 22 from the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, bound to arachidonic acid.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are the vector for transmission of Dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses. These mosquitos feed exclusively on human hosts for a blood meal. Previous studies have established that Dengue virus infection of the mosquito results in increased expression of the odorant binding proteins 22 and 10 within the mosquito salivary gland and silencing of these genes dramatically reduces blood-feeding behaviors. Odorant binding proteins are implicated in modulating the chemosensory perception of external stimuli that regulate behaviors such as host location, feeding and reproduction.…

Effects of varying particle size of forage on digestion and chewing behavior of dairy heifers.

Eighteen Holstein heifers were fed long and chopped coarse and fine alfalfa hay ad libitum to evaluate effects of physical form on digestion and chemical composition of feed and fecal particles and to examine the applicability of a sinusoidal model to chewing behavior. Recordings of jaw movement were divided into 1-h segments for analysis. Least square mean size of fecal particles from coarse and finely chopped diets were 290 and 297 micrometers as compared to 227 micrometers on long hay. Intakes of dry matter were greater an digestibilities lower for chopped as compared to long hay. Crude pro

Testing preference for corn milling coproducts by lactating Jersey cows.

Manipulations at the intersection of nutrition, behavior, and management may be an important way to apply novel feeding strategies that take advantage of affordable feeds and a cow's natural behavior to increase feed intake. The grain fuel sector continues to modify methods for how corn ethanol is produced. This has resulted in different feed coproducts that can be utilized by the dairy industry. The objective of this study was to determine how preferences of various corn milling coproducts differ and also compare them with corn grain. Eight lactating Jersey cows (169 ± 4 DIM, 29.7 ± 4.55 kg/d

Development and validation of the new French ORALQUEST scale for evaluating feeding difficulties in young children.

OBJECTIVE: Feeding difficulties are common in children with and without somatic conditions. Our objective was to develop a parent-report questionnaire (ORALQUEST) designed to be administered by a professional and to assess feeding difficulties in children aged 9 months to 6 years. METHODS: The questionnaire explores four domains: eating behavior, oral skills, tactile and oral sensitivity, and family environment. A validation study was done in 338 children seen for feeding difficulties (n = 74) or receiving follow-up for conditions at risk for feeding difficulties (n = 264). We assessed the va

Medial cerebellar nucleus projects to feeding-related neurons in the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus in rats.

The cerebellum, a hindbrain motor center, also participates in regulating nonsomatic visceral activities such as feeding control. However, the underlying neural mechanism is largely unknown. Here, we investigate whether the cerebellar medial nucleus (MN), one of the final outputs of the cerebellum, could directly project to and modulate the feeding-related neurons in the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMN), which has been traditionally implicated in feeding behavior, energy balance, and body weight regulation. The retrograde tracing results show that both GABAergic and glutamatergic projec…

Mechanistic toxicity and growth abnormalities mediated by subacute exposure to environmentally relevant levels of benzophenone-3 in clown anemonefish (Amphiprion ocellaris).

Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is a UV filter that is ubiquitously present in the environment due to its photostability and degradation resistance and has wide applications in personal care products. BP-3 will eventually be discharged into the ocean. Studies shows BP-3 interferes with endocrine system of aquatic organisms, especially fish. However, the toxicity and mechanisms of subacute exposure of the coral reef fish to BP-3 remain elusive. Here, we exposed the one-month-old clown anemonefish to BP-3 at 1 and 10 μg/L for 14 and 28 days, respectively. After chronic exposure, the effects of BP-3 on the

An ethogram of acute pain behaviors in cats based on expert consensus.

An improved understanding of behaviors reflecting acute pain in cats is a priority for feline welfare. The aim of this study was to create and validate a comprehensive ethogram of acute pain behaviors in cats that can discriminate painful versus non-painful individuals. An inventory of behaviors (ethogram) with their respective descriptors was created based on a literature review of PubMed, Web of Science and CAB Abstracts databases. The ethogram was divided into ten behavior categories that could be evaluated by duration and/or frequency: position in the cage, exploratory behaviors, activity,

Perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and health-thinness-cleanliness motivations as primary correlates of orthorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with eating foods perceived as healthy or clean. Despite growing research interest, risk factors and underlying motivations for ON remain poorly understood. This study examined demographic factors, psychological correlates, and dietary motivations associated with ON symptomatology, building on McComb and Mills' (2019) theoretical model. METHODS: Participants (N = 697) completed validated measures of ON, alongside assessments of demographic factors (age, gender, socioeconomic status, dietary means), psychological v

Trajectories of childhood eating behaviors and their association with internalizing and externalizing symptoms in adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have shown that maladaptive eating behaviors in childhood predict greater risk for eating disorders in adolescence. Whether or not maladaptive eating behaviors could represent developmental risk factors for a larger spectrum of psychopathologies is unknown. This study described longitudinal trajectories of overeating and picky eating behaviors in boys and girls from ages 2.5 to 6 years. We then examined whether these developmental trajectories in childhood are associated with internalizing and externalizing symptoms during mid-adolescence (age 15). METHODS: 2 014 pa
