Studies of iron(II) and iron(III) complexes with fac-N2O, cis-N2O2 and N2O3 donor ligands: models for the 2-His 1-carboxylate motif of non-heme iron monooxygenases.

Enzymes in the oxygen-activating class of mononuclear non-heme iron oxygenases (MNOs) contain a highly conserved iron center facially ligated by two histidine nitrogen atoms and one carboxylate oxygen atom that leave one face of the metal center (three binding sites) open for coordination to cofactor, substrate, and/or dioxygen. A comparative family of [Fe(II/III)(N(2)O(n))(L)(4-n))](±x), n = 1-3, L = solvent or Cl(-), model complexes, based on a ligand series that supports a facially ligated N,N,O core that is then modified to contain either one or two additional carboxylate chelate arms, has

Antioxidant activity of protein hydrolysates from whole anchovy sprat (Clupeonella engrauliformis) prepared using endogenous enzymes and commercial proteases.

BACKGROUND: The antioxidant activity and chemical properties of fish protein hydrolysates (FPHs) prepared from anchovy sprat (Clupeonella engrauliformis) using endogenous enzymes (autolysis) and commercial proteases were investigated. RESULTS: The highest degree of hydrolysis (DH) was observed with Alcalase and papain and the highest protein recovery (PR) with Alcalase and bromelain. FPH yield was highest with Alcalase (82.3%) and lowest with autolysis (63.64%). Increased DH resulted in increased FPH yield (R(2) = 0.77). The highest oil recovery was observed with bromelain (6.41%) and the low

Reductive dechlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons as non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL): preliminary investigation on effects of cement doses.

The reactivities of various types of iron mixtures to degrade chlorinated hydrocarbons (PCE, TCE and 1,1,1-TCA) in the form of non-aqueous phase liquids were investigated. The iron mixtures included a mixture of Fe(II) and Portland cement (Fe(II)-C), a mixture of Fe(II), Fe(III) and Ca(OH)(2) (Fe(II/III)-L), and a mixture of Fe(II), Fe(III), Ca(OH)(2), and Portland cement (Fe(II/III)-C). When the same amount of Fe(II) was used, Fe(II)-C was more reactive with chlorinated ethylenes (i.e. PCE and TCE) than Fe(II/III)-L. The reductive pathway for high concentrations of total PCE (i.e. above solub

Feasibility and optimization study of using cold-forming extrusion process for agglomerating and microencapsulating ferrous fumarate for salt double fortification with iodine and iron.

A microencapsulation-based technology platform has been developed for salt double fortification with iron and iodine, aiming to address two globally prevalent micronutrient deficiencies simultaneously. Specifically, ferrous fumarate was microencapsulated into a form of salt grain-sized premix, and then added into iodised salt. The earlier process involved fluidised-bed agglomeration followed by lipid coating. To improve physico-chemical properties of the iron premix, the use of cold-forming extrusion for agglomerating and microencapsulating ferrous fumarate was investigated and optimized in th

Improved phosphorus acquisition by tobacco through transgenic expression of mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase from Penicillium oxalicum.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for plant growth and development, but is generally unavailable and inaccessible in soil, since applied P is mostly fixed to aluminium (Al) and ferrum (Fe) in acidic soils and to calcium (Ca) in alkaline soils. Increased organic acid excretion is thought to be one mechanism by which plants use to enhance P uptake. In this study, we overexpressed a mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase (MDH) gene from the mycorrhizal fungi Penicillium oxalicum in tobacco. The MDH activity of transgenic lines was significantly increased compared to that of wild type. Malate co

Thiomethoxychalcone-functionalized ferrocene ligands as selective chemodosimeters for mercury(II): single-crystal X-ray structural signature of the [Hg8(mu8-S)(SCH3)12]2+ cluster.

Thiomethoxychalcone-based ligands bis[3,3-bis(methylsulfanyl)]-1,1'-eta(5)-ferrocenyl-2-propen-1-one (L(1)), 3,3-bis(methylsulfanyl)-1-eta(5)-ferrocenyl-2-propen-1-one (L(2)), and 3-methylsulfanyl-3-sulfanyl-1-eta(5)-ferrocenyl-2-propen-1-one (L(3)) have been synthesized on the ferrocene backbone by varying the number of chalcone arms and thiomethoxy substitutents. The single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses of all three ligands are reported in which crystals of L(1) were obtained as both syn and anti conformers and showed the conformational freedom of the two cyclopentadienyl (Cp) unit

Magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy of antiferromagnetically coupled hetero-metallic rings [H2NR2][Cr7MF8(O2CCMe3)16].

The optical and magnetic properties of the multi-metal rings [NH(2)R(2)][Cr(7)MF(8)(O(2)CCMe(3))(16)], where M = Cd(II), Mn(II) or Ni(II), have been studied using variable-field and variable-temperature magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the UV-visible spectra. Spectra of samples were recorded in a frozen organic matrix or cast in a polymethacrylate (PMMA) polymer film between 1.7 and 75 K. The spectra are characteristic of the Cr(III) ion (d(3)) in a rhombic field when M = Cd(II). In the case that M = Ni(II) additional optical transitions arise from the d(8) ion whereas for M = Mn(II) no ad

Metal-catalyzed anaerobic disproportionation of hydroxylamine. Role of diazene and nitroxyl intermediates in the formation of N2, N2O, NO+, and NH3.

The catalytic disproportionation of NH(2)OH has been studied in anaerobic aqueous solution, pH 6-9.3, at 25.0 degrees C, with Na(3)[Fe(CN)(5)NH(3)].3H(2)O as a precursor of the catalyst, [Fe(II)(CN)(5)H(2)O](3)(-). The oxidation products are N(2), N(2)O, and NO(+) (bound in the nitroprusside ion, NP), and NH(3) is the reduction product. The yields of N(2)/N(2)O increase with pH and with the concentration of NH(2)OH. Fast regime conditions involve a chain process initiated by the NH(2) radical, generated upon coordination of NH(2)OH to [Fe(II)(CN)(5)H(2)O](3)(-). NH(3) and nitroxyl, HNO, are fo

Azide, cyanide, fluoride, imidazole and pyridine binding to ferric and ferrous native horse heart cytochrome c and to its carboxymethylated derivative: a comparative study.

Azide, cyanide, fluoride, imidazole, and pyridine binding to ferric and ferrous native horse heart cytochrome c and to its carboxymethylated derivative has been investigated, from the thermodynamic viewpoint, at pH 7.5 and 25.0 degrees C. Ligand affinity for ferric and ferrous carboxymethylated cytochrome c is higher by about 30- and 400-fold, respectively, than that observed for the native protein. The results here reported: (i) allow the estimation, for the first time, of the ligand-independent free energy associated with the heme-iron sixth coordination bond in ferric and ferrous native cyt

Asp and His-rich model peptides as a basis for elucidating Mn(II) and Fe(II) peptide coordination chemistry.

Although Mn(II) and Fe(II) ions are essential for all living organisms, particularly pathogenic bacteria, their coordination preferences with peptide ligands remain insufficiently understood. Metabolic shift and enhanced electron transfer in sulfate-reducing bacteria induced by corrosion-biomineralized iron sulfide nanoparticles.

While SRB-induced biocorrosion is well-documented, the reciprocal influence of metallic corrosion and its mineral products on SRB metabolism remains underexplored. This study investigated the interactions between Q235 steel corrosion, biomineralization products, and the metabolic activity of Desulfovibrio bizertensis SY-1. Results indicated that Q235 steel corrosion significantly altered the bacterial metabolic mode. Specifically, iron sulfide nanoparticles generated during the corrosion process facilitated extracellular electron transfer. Conversely, under iron-limited conditions (absence of

Mechanism of Enhancement by the Fe2+-Induced Heme Degradation Activity of PM0042 From Pasteurella multocida.

PM0042 from Pasteurella multocida is a heme-degrading enzyme homologous to HutZ from Vibrio cholerae, but uniquely contains a glycine-histidine (GH) repeat motif at its C-terminal region. Unlike HutZ, PM0042 exhibits a threefold increase in heme degradation activity upon Fe2+ addition, yet the underlying mechanism has remained unclear. Here, we investigated the effect of Fe2+ on the catalytic process of PM0042. Spectroscopic analyses revealed that Fe2 + binding does not induce structural changes at either distal or proximal heme sites. Kinetic studies of individual steps in the degradation pat

Endogenous reactive iron sulfide triggers oxidative toxicity and activity decay in intermittently starved anammox consortia.

Iron is an essential element for anammox metabolism, but its role in activity decay is poorly understood. This study elucidates a "Trojan Horse" mechanism that endogenous iron becomes a catalyst for self-inflicted oxidative stress under redox oscillations. Three anammox consortia under full-load (RF), persistent light-load (RP), and intermittent starvation-refeeding (RI) regimes were systematically compared by integrating C-N-S-Fe cycling, biochemical and multi-omics analyses. Results showed that intermittent starvation initiated extensive cell lysis and the subsequent release of organic matte

Electron transfer mechanisms and microbiome stability of mixed-SRB-assembled Bio-FeS hybrids for enhanced chromium remediation.

While biogenic iron sulfide nanoparticles (Bio-FeS NPs) exhibit exceptional efficacy in hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) remediation, their broader application is severely constrained by an overreliance on pure-culture synthesis that oversimplifies complex environmental realities, and a limited understanding of the underlying electron transfer and synergistic removal mechanisms within mixed microbial consortia. To bridge these knowledge gaps, we synthesized a biohybrid material (Bio-FeS@SRB) in situ using a mixed consortium of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Response surface analysis identified t

Ferrous sulfate and lipopolysaccharide co-exposure induce neuroinflammation, neurobehavioral motor deficits, neurodegenerative and histopathological biomarkers relevant to Parkinson's disease-like symptoms in Wistar rats.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra region of the brain. Although iron is one of the essential micronutrients in the brain, its excess exposure and accumulation in the brain substantia nigra and striatum regions may induce critical pathological changes relevant to PD. This study has evaluated neurobehavioral, biochemical, and structural alterations resembling PD-like symptoms induced through a 4-week co-exposure of ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in Wistar rats. Ferrocene-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Adsorption and Degradation of Antibiotics.

Antibiotics have emerged as a significant class of organic pollutants, posing serious global challenges to both the environment and human health. To address the issue of water pollution by antibiotics, a ferrocene-based organic framework (FcMOF) with paramagnetism has been synthesized by hydrothermal complexation of ferrocene dicarboxylic acid with copper chloride and utilized for quick and efficient adsorption and degradation of antibiotics. The maximum adsorption capacity of TC was 736.59 mg g-1 and the degradation rate reached 94.24 % under the optimal conditions (40 °C, pH = 3, 3.0 % H2O2)

Analysing the role of Fe (II) on flocculation of sand-clay mixtures under estuarine mixing.

Estuaries are fragile environment that are most affected by climate change. One of the major consequences of climate change on estuarine processes is the enhancement in salt intrusion leading to higher salinity values. This has several implications on the estuarine sediment dynamics. Of the various factors that affect the flocculation of cohesive sediments, salinity and turbulence have been recognized as to have great significance. Many of the estuaries are contaminated with heavy metals, of which, the concentration of Iron (Fe (II)) are generally on the higher range. However, the influence of

Cr(VI) Reduction and Sequestration by FeS Nanoparticles Formed in situ as Aquifer Material Coating to Create a Regenerable Reactive Zone.

Remediation of large and dilute plumes of groundwater contaminated by oxidized pollutants such as chromate is a common and difficult challenge. Herein, we show that in situ formation of FeS nanoparticles (using dissolved Fe(II), S(-II), and natural organic matter as a nucleating template) results in uniform coating of aquifer material to create a regenerable reactive zone that mitigates Cr(VI) migration. Flow-through columns packed with quartz sand are amended first with an Fe2+ solution and then with a HS- solution to form a nano-FeS coating on the sand, which does not hinder permeability. Th

New insights on zero-valent iron permeable reactive barrier for Cr(VI) removal: The function of FeS reaction zone downstream in-situ generated by sulfate-reducing bacteria.

The biogeochemical behavior downstream of the zero-valent iron permeable reactive barrier (ZVI-PRB) plays an enormous positive role in the remediation of contaminated-groundwater, but has been completely neglected for a long time. Therefore, this study conducted a 240-day SRB-enhanced ZVI-PRB column experiment, focusing on what exactly happens downstream of ZVI-PRB. Results show that biosulfidation of SRB inside ZVI-PRB prolonged the complete Cr(VI) removal longevity of ZVI-PRB from 38 days to at least 240 days. More importantly, unlike previous studies that focused on improving the performanc

Luminescent iron phthalocyanine organic polymer nanosheets with space-separated dual-active sites for the detection and photocatalytic reduction of Cr(Ⅵ) from wastewater.

Cr(Ⅵ) residues in livestock and poultry wastewater are a rising concern for human health and biotic environments. For the removal of Cr(Ⅵ), its simultaneous reduction and adsorption represents a sustainable and efficient strategy. Herein, iron nodes on covalently bonded two-dimensional phthalocyanine organic polymer (PcOP-Fe) nanosheets with space-separated dual-active sites are developed for the simultaneous detection and removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. In the FeN4 structure of PcOP-Fe nanosheets, Fe acts as an electron capture center, effectively facilitating the accumulation of photogene
