Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is characterized by a variety of physical and behavioral traits that result from maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Features of FAS include prenatal or postnatal growth deficiency, abnormal facial features, and central nervous system deficits. CDC's Birth Defects Monitoring Program (BDMP)--a national program to monitor congenital malformations--has collected data on the incidence of FAS among newborn infants since 1979. This report presents a rate for FAS in the United States using BDMP data from 1979 through 1992.

Has the health care system over-guarded the social rights of alcohol? Listening to the testimonies of several parents with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol effect (FAE) children led Jill Courtemanche, nurse and unit administrator at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, to believe so.

The paper discusses 8 cases with the syndrome of alcoholic embryopathy (5 boys and 3 girls aged from 8 to 14 years). All children examined had specific craniofacial abnormalities, oligophrenia, small height and weight at birth, microcephaly, combined in some cases with different defects of development (defect of interatrial septum, cleft palate, spina bifida). Two cases of alcoholic embryopathy are given in detail. The significance of different factors in the pathogenesis of this syndrome is discussed.

Ethanol is the most common human teratogen, and its consumption during pregnancy can produce a wide range of abnormalities in infants known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). The major characteristics of FASD can be divided into: (i) growth retardation, (ii) craniofacial abnormalities, and (iii) central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. FASD is the most common cause of nongenetic mental retardation in Western countries. Although the underlying molecular mechanisms of ethanol neurotoxicity are not completely determined, the induction of oxidative stress is believed to be one central pro

We report on two unrelated patients with fetal alcohol syndrome with hypoplasia of the periocular region, resulting in a low and narrow forehead and hypotelorism. Other typical manifestations of the syndrome involving the facial midline are also present. These observations can be added to clinical and experimental evidence from other authors, supporting the concept that the facial anomalies of the fetal alcohol syndrome are the expression of a midline defect originating from the disruption of the ordered development of midline mesoderm cells during early embryogenesis.
