Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Mississippi: survey for spotted fever antibodies in dogs and for spotted fever group reckettsiae in dog ticks.

During epidemiologic studies of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in Mississippi in 1973, dogs were surveyed for antibodies tp spotted fever group antigens and for tick parasites infected with rickettsiae of the spotted fever group. Fifty-three (46%) of 116 serum samples had complement-fixing antibody titers greater than or equal to 1:8 as compared to only one (5%) of 21 samples from a group of dogs obtained from metropolitan Chicage. Fifty-two per cent of the dogs tested from Mississippi had microagglutinating antibodies titers greater than or equal to 1:8; 9% of dogs from Chicago had similar tite…

Leukopenia and Neutropenic Fever.

Neutropenic fever is a life-threatening condition commonly associated with chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, requiring rapid diagnosis and immediate treatment. Risk stratification tools, such as the MASCC and CISNE scores, help clinicians identify high-risk patients and tailor management strategies. Future efforts should focus on integrating technological advancements, enhancing patient-centered care, and developing novel therapies to reduce recurrence and improve outcomes.

[Recurrent fever, persistent cytopenia].

Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is a rare large B-cell lymphoma subtype. We report a patient who presented with "recurrent fever and pancytopenia." A 64-year-old female patient had previously been diagnosed with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia and had received zanubrutinib treatment. In February 2023, the patient revisited due to "recurrent fever and pancytopenia." A positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan demonstrated significant enlargement of the bilateral adrenal glands. After an adrenal biopsy, she was diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, not otherwise …

[Q Fever: what's new?].

Q fever is caused by Coxiella burnetii, a Gram-negative, intracellular bacterium. Sheep and goats are the main reservoirs of this zoonosis, which is transmitted either by aerosols, over long distances via the wind or through milk or dairy products. Acute Q fever may be asymptomatic, or present as a flu-like syndrome, atypical pneumonia or hepatitis. Chronic Q fever manifests in a wide variety of ways, including blood culture-negative endocarditis, chronic hepatitis, osteoarticular involvement (spondylitis, arthritis, osteitis) or uveitis. Autoimmune diseases can be sometimes induced by chronic…

[Fever in rheumatological diseases].

Fever is a frequent and important symptom in patients with rheumatological diseases and can be an expression of activity of the underlying rheumatological disease. There is great variability in the incidence of fever as a symptom of the disease between individual diseases. The growing understanding of the molecular signatures of the diseases can help to explain these discrepancies: A genetic overactivation of potently pyrogenic cytokines is the reason why fever is nearly always present in autoinflammatory syndromes. In contrast, fever is less common in polyarthritis and myositis and mostly lim…

Q Fever-Associated Chorioretinitis.

Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent in Q fever, a zoonotic disease. Ocular manifestations of this disease are extremely rare and have been infrequently reported. In this report, we describe a rare case of chorioretinitis in a patient incompletely treated for Q fever. We highlight the unique ocular manifestation with multimodal imaging, and the importance of a thorough history and prompt and correct treatment of the disease with systemic therapy. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina 2024;55:412-414.].

Fever of Unknown Origin.

Fever of unknown origin in adolescents is a challenging disease state for which potential underlying etiology can include infectious, non-infectious inflammatory, and malignancy processes. Careful and thorough history (including exposure history), serial examination, and targeted laboratory and imaging testing is critical for these patients. In adolescents in which an etiology is discovered, infectious etiology remains the most prevalent, followed by non-infectious inflammatory diseases. In patients with non-diagnostic overall reassuring work up, the prognosis is typically self-limiting and fa…

Epidemiology of Lassa Fever.

Lassa fever (LF) is a lethal hemorrhagic disease primarily concentrated in the tropical savannah regions of Nigeria and the Mano River Union countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. Endemic hotspots within these countries have had recurrent exposure to Lassa virus (LASV) via continual spillover from the host reservoir Mastomys natalensis. Increased trade and travel throughout the region have spread the virus to previously unexposed countries, including Ghana, Benin, Mali, and Côte d'Ivoire. In the absence of effective treatment or vaccines to LASV, preventative measures against Lassa fe…
