BACKGROUND: Hyperhomocysteinemia seems to be a common phenomenon in both patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Many factors including deficiencies of cobalamin, folate and pyridoxine, smoking habits, alcohol and coffee intake, some medications and age may predispose subjects to hyperhomocysteinemia. The study aimed to evaluate homocysteine levels in an inflammatory bowel disease cohort as dependent of life style and disease activity.
METHODS: 85 consecutive patients with inflammatory bowel disease (38 with Crohn's disease and 47 with ulcerative colitis) and 65 control subjects

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiency is a global public health concern, especially among the adolescents of developing countries including India. Folate, an essential B-vitamin plays an indispensable role in various physiological processes throughout life. This is a cross-sectional study to determine prevalence of folate insufficiency among North-Indian school-going adolescents of various socio-economic backgrounds.
METHODS: A total of 3129 healthy school-going adolescents from North India were selected for the study and circulatory folate levels were measured using an electrochemiluminescenc

Folate is a vitamin required for cell growth and is present in fortified foods in the form of folic acid to prevent congenital abnormalities. The impact of low-folate status on life-long health is poorly understood. We found that limiting folate levels with the folate antagonist methotrexate increased the lifespan of yeast and worms. We then restricted folate intake in aged mice and measured various health metrics, metabolites, and gene expression signatures. Limiting folate intake decreased anabolic biosynthetic processes in mice and enhanced metabolic plasticity. Despite reduced serum folate

Folate deficiency contribute to neural tube defects (NTDs) which could be rescued by folate supplementation. However, the underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. Besides, there is considerable controversy concerning the forms of folate used for supplementation. To address this controversy, we prepared culture medium with different forms of folate, folic acid (FA), and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5mTHF), at concentrations of 5 μM, 500 nM, 50 nM, and folate free, respectively. Mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) were treated with different folates continuously for three passages, and

Classically, deficiencies of vitamin B12 and folate are associated with megaloblastic anaemia. Additionally, vitamin B12 is able to cause a haemolytic anaemia in the form of pseudo-thrombotic microangiopathy (pseudo-TMA). Here, we present a case of a middle-aged woman with a history of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass who presented with dyspnoea and fatigue and was found to have thrombocytopenia and a non-immune haemolytic anaemia. Work-up for haemolytic uraemic syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria, infection, malignancy and autoimmune conditions was unre

Researchers studying the effect of folate restriction on rodents have resorted to the use of the antibiotic succinylsulfathiazole (SST) in the folate depleted diet to induce a folate deficient status. SST has been used extensively in rodent studies since the 1940s. Its localized effect on the gut bacteria as well as its effectiveness in reducing folate producing species is well documented. The possible overlap between the pathways affected by folate depletion and SST could potentially produce a confounding variable in such studies. In our novel study, we analyzed the effect of SST on folate le

There is widespread vitamin and mineral deficiency problem in Tanzania with known deficiencies of at least vitamin A, iron, folate and zinc, resulting in lasting negative consequences especially on maternal health, cognitive development and thus the nation's economic potential. Folate deficiency is associated with significant adverse health effects among women of reproductive age, including a higher risk of neural tube defects. Several countries, including Tanzania, have implemented mandatory fortification of wheat and maize flour but evidence on the effectiveness of these programs in developi

Ready-to-eat breakfast cereals have been voluntarily fortified with folic acid since 1995, with the purpose of reducing the prevalence of neural tube defects in utero. Using data from the recent Australian Health Survey, this study aimed to estimate folate intake from one serving of breakfast cereals (median amount). Various commercial brands were purchased in 2002 (n = 19) and in 2014 (n = 14); folate was determined by microbiological assay and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Total folate (μg/100 g) in 2002 and 2014 selections were 144-633 and 147-564, respectively, and mostly com

OBJECTIVE: Few studies of maternal prenatal diet and child development examine micronutrient status in relation to fetal assessment.
METHODS: Twenty-four-hour dietary recall of zinc and folate and 20min of fetal heart rate were collected from 3rd trimester pregnant adolescents.
RESULTS: Deficient zinc was associated with less fetal heart rate variability. Deficient folate had no associations with HRV. Neither deficient zinc nor deficient folate was related to fetal heart rate.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings, from naturalistic observation, are consistent with emerging data on prenatal zinc supp

Improving nutritional health is one of the major socio-economic challenges of the 21st century, especially with the continuously growing and ageing world population. Folate deficiency is an important and underestimated problem of micronutrient malnutrition affecting billions of people worldwide. More and more countries are adapting policies to fight folate deficiency, mostly by fortifying foods with folic acid. However, there is growing concern about this practice, calling for alternative or complementary strategies. In addition, fortification programmes are often inaccessible to remote and po

B-vitamin deficiency is a risk factor for vascular disease. The mechanism by which the deficiency impacts on disease risk is unclear. We have analysed whether the inflammatory response of mononuclear cells can be modified by cellular folate status in vitro. We show that the mouse monocyte cell line RAW264.7 grown under folate restriction displays a decrease in intracellular folate levels and a reduced growth rate. The cells also show a 2- to 3-fold increase in expression of the inflammatory mediators, IL1β, IL6, TNFα and MCP1 at the RNA and protein level (p<0.01) under conditions of folate def

Skin, the largest, most exposed organ of the body, provides a protective interface between humans and the environment. One of its primary roles is protection against exposure to sunlight, a major source of skin damage where the UV radiation (UVR) component functions as a complete carcinogen. Melanin pigmentation and the evolution of dark skin is an adaptive protective mechanism against high levels of UVR exposure. Recently, the hypothesis that skin pigmentation balances folate preservation and Vitamin D production has emerged. Both micronutrients are essential for reproductive success. Photode

Seminal parameters were evaluated in 16 fully mature patients with thalassemia intermedia. Their ages ranged from 19 to 54 years (mean age 27 yrs) and serum ferritin levels varied from 205 to 3400 ng/ml. Eleven patients (68.7 %) had normal seminal parameters, 1 (1.6 %) had oligospermia, 3 (18.7 %) had asthenospermia and 1 (1.6 %) had oligoasthenospermia. A significant positive correlation was observed between the serum ferritin and ALT and serum ferritin and ?-GT (r: 0.636, p: 0.007; r: 0.497, p: 0.048, respectively), ALT and ?-GT (r: 0.749, p: 0.001) and total sperm concentration and serum fo

Vitamin B12 is a fascinating nutrient in that it is made by microbes but is essential for human metabolism. Humans can get it only from animal origin foods. Dietary deficiency rather than an absorption defect (Pernicious anemia, intrinsic factor defect) is the commonest cause of deficiency in the world, contributed by cultural and economic imperatives. Indians have a large prevalence of subclinical B12 deficiency due to vegetarianism. Birth cohort with long-term serial follow-up (Pune Maternal Nutrition Study) has helped reveal the life-course evolution of B12 deficiency: genetics, transplacen

Megaloblastic anemia causes macrocytic anemia from ineffective red blood cell production and intramedullary hemolysis. The most common causes are folate (vitamin B9) deficiency and cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency. Megaloblastic anemia can be diagnosed based on characteristic morphologic and laboratory findings. However, other benign and neoplastic diseases need to be considered, particularly in severe cases. Therapy involves treating the underlying cause-eg, with vitamin supplementation in cases of deficiency, or with discontinuation of a suspected medication.

The fortification of staple foods has eliminated many deficiency diseases. Despite this, "tampering" with people's food always provokes opposition, much of it from health professionals. Opposition is often based on self-interest, tunnel vision and theory rather than research. A historical perspective of the patterns of objections to fortification and its outcomes may help resolve the anxieties and opposing ethical positions of advocates and opponents of fortification.
