Eukaryotic poly(A)-binding protein (PABP) is a ubiquitous, essential factor involved in mRNA biogenesis, translation, and turnover. Most eukaryotes examined have only one or a few PABPs. In contrast, eight expressed PABP genes are present in Arabidopsis thaliana. These genes fall into three distinct classes, based on highly concordant results of (i) phylogenetic analysis of the amino acid sequences of the encoded proteins, (ii) analysis of the intron number and placement, and (iii) surveys of gene expression patterns. Representatives of each of the three classes also exist in the rice genome,

A gene-to-metabolite approach afforded new insights regarding defence mechanisms in oat plants that can be incorporated into plant breeding programmes for the selection of markers and genes related to disease resistance. Monitoring metabolite levels and changes therein can complement and corroborate transcriptome (mRNA) data on plant-pathogen interactions, thus revealing mechanisms involved in pathogen attack and host defence. A multi-omics approach thus adds new layers of information such as identifying metabolites with antimicrobial properties, elucidating metabolomic profiles of infected an

Cold stress, a major abiotic factor, positively modulates the synthesis of artemisinin in Artemisia annua and influences the biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites. To elucidate the changes in the synthesis of secondary metabolites under low-temperature conditions, we conducted dynamic transcriptomic and metabolite quantification analyses of A. annua leaves. The accumulation of total organic carbon (TOC) in leaves under cold stress provided ample precursors for secondary metabolite synthesis. Short-term exposure to low temperature induced a transient increase in jasmonic acid synthesis, w

BACKGROUND: Cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX) can irreversibly degrade cytokinin, regulating the growth and development of plants and helping them cope with environmental stress.
METHODS: To understand the expression characteristics and the biological functions of CKX in alfalfa (Medicago sativa), a novel gene, designated as MsCKX5 (GenBank: PV934228), was cloned, characterized and overexpressed in Arabidopsis thaliana.
RESULTS: qRT-PCR results showed that MsCKX5 gene expression was clearly tissue-specific and had the highest expression level in the stems. In addition, the expression lev

Heat stress is a key environmental factor that adversely affects plant growth, development, and productivity. Nitrate reductase (NR), encoded by AtNIA1 and AtNIA2, plays a crucial role in nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis, which mediates stress responses in plants. In this study, we investigated the roles of AtNIA1 and AtNIA2 in regulating plant heat stress tolerance. Under heat stress conditions, Arabidopsis thaliana plants maintained higher relative water content and chlorophyll levels, whereas atnia1 and atnia2 mutants exhibited greater physiological damage. Oxidative stress markers such as MD

The mesophyll protoplast transient expression system is an essential and robust methodology for examining gene expression regulation. Despite its potential, it has not been effectively employed to elucidate the genetic regulatory pathways and networks underlying plant responses to nutrient starvation, such as those involving phosphorus (Pi) and iron (Fe). In this study, we identified differentially expressed genes in response to Pi starvation in Arabidopsis using transcriptome analysis and RT-qPCR validation. Our findings revealed that Pi starvation significantly upregulated the expression of

NtIAA17 acts as a positive regulator of salt tolerance in tobacco, which alleviates salt-repressed root growth by sustaining auxin homeostasis and antioxidant capacity. Across the globe, soil salinization severely restricts plant growth and crop yield, posing a serious threat to agricultural sustainability. While auxin is indispensable for the control of root development and abiotic stress adaptation, the precise mechanism through which this hormone modulates salt tolerance in tobacco remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that salt stress markedly inhibits root growth in tobacco, whi

The sessile nature of plants and complete absence of humoral immunity equips them with complex mechanism of resilience against diverse stress factors. The innate immune system in plants mostly utilises transcriptional reprogramming during stress exposures. Biotic interactions in plants require multifaceted gene expressional plasticity due to constant co-evolutionary arms-race between the plants and pathogen. Classical 'zig-zag' model of plant immunity reports biphasic induction of immune response in plant-microbe interaction. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and salicylic acid (SA) play central r

Hormone signaling crosstalk plays a major role in plant defense against a wide range of both biotic and abiotic stresses. While many reviews on plant-microbe interactions have well described the general trends of signaling pathways in shaping host responses to pathogens, few discussions have considered a synthesis of positive versus negative interactions among such pathways, or variations in the signaling molecules themselves. This review deals with the interaction trends between salicylic, jasmonic, and abscisic acids in the signaling pathways, as well as exceptions to such trends. Here we fo

All living cells possess adaptive responses to environmental stress that are essential to ensuring cell survival. For motile organisms, this can culminate in avoidance or attractile behavior, but for sessile organisms such as plants, stress adaptation is a process of success or failure within the confines of a given environment. Nearly all bacterial species possess a highly evolved system for stress adaptation, known as the "stringent response." This ancient and ubiquitous regulatory response is mediated by production of a second messenger of general stress, the nucleotide guanosine-3',5'-(bis

Maintaining the homeostasis of chlorophyll biosynthesis is essential for ensuring efficient photosynthesis and preventing photooxidative damage in plants. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) regulate plant development and stress responses, but their role in chlorophyll metabolism and photosynthesis remains unclear. Here, we identified and characterized PdHDA19, an RPD3-type HDAC from Populus davidiana Dode. PdHDA19 is highly expressed in leaves and apical buds, and its expression is induced by light. Overexpression of PdHDA19 leads to light green leaves, reduced chlorophyll content and decreased phot

SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE (SPL) transcription factors, which are unique to plants, contain a highly conserved SBP domain that regulates gene expression by binding to downstream targets. They play critical roles in various biological processes, especially in the regulation of flowering in plants. In this study, two SPL-like genes (MiSPL9a and MiSPL9b) were identified from mango genomic and transcriptomic data, and their sequence, expression and function were further analyzed. Sequence analysis revealed that MiSPL9a and MiSPL9b have open reading frames of 1173 bp and 1158 bp, respec

Developmental and organ-specific expression of genes in dhurrin biosynthesis, bio-activation, and recycling offers dynamic metabolic responses optimizing growth and defence responses in Sorghum. Plant defence models evaluate the costs and benefits of resource investments at different stages in the life cycle. Poor understanding of the molecular regulation of defence deployment and remobilization hampers accuracy of the predictions. Cyanogenic glucosides, such as dhurrin are phytoanticipins that release hydrogen cyanide upon bio-activation. In this study, RNA-seq was used to investigate the exp

Plant growth and development is coordinated by complex networks of interacting hormones, and cross-talk between ethylene and auxin signaling is essential for a wide range of plant developmental processes. Nevertheless, the molecular links underlying the interaction between the two hormones remain poorly understood. In order to decipher the cross-talk between the Ethylene Response Factor Sl-ERF.B3 and Sl-IAA27, mediating ethylene and auxin signaling, respectively, we combined reverse genetic approaches, physiological methods, transactivation experiments and electrophoretic mobility shift assays

Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), a hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) donor, effectively mitigates chilling injury (CI) in bananas; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. This study demonstrated that NaHS alleviates CI symptoms by activating antioxidant defense systems that reduce oxidative stress induced by CI. Transcriptomic analysis revealed 1003 differentially expressed genes in three sample groups, with enrichment in pathways related to cellular processes, metabolic activity, and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. NaHS treatment significantly upregulated seven ethylene response facto

The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors ICEs (Inducer of CBF Expression) are pivotal regulators of plant cold stress responses, acting by orchestrating the transcription of COR (cold-responsive) genes. While the ICEs-dependent transcriptional control of COR genes expression remains poorly understood. As an evolutionarily conserved transcriptional coactivator, the Mediator complex bridges gene-specific transcription factors with the RNA polymerase II (Pol II) machinery to modulate gene transcription, yet whether and how Mediator complex participates in ICEs-dependent transcripti

Target of rapamycin (TOR) acts as an important regulator of cell growth, development and stress responses in most examined diploid eukaryotes. However, little is known about TOR in tetraploid species such as cotton. Here, we show that TORC1-S6K-RPS6, the major signaling components, are conserved and further expanded in cotton genome. Though the cotton seedlings are insensitive to rapamycin, AZD8055, the second-generation inhibitor of TOR, can significantly suppress the growth in cotton. Global transcriptome analysis revealed that genes associated with jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis and transd

Oxygen deprivation, in line with other stress conditions, is accompanied by reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen species (RNS) formation and is characterised by a set of metabolic changes collectively named as the 'oxidative stress response'. The controversial induction of oxidative metabolism under the lack of oxygen is necessitated by ROS and RNS signaling in the induction of adaptive responses, and inevitably results in oxidative damage. To prevent detrimental effects of oxidative stress, the levels of ROS and NO are tightly controlled on transcriptional, translational and metabolic levels. H

BACKGROUND: R2R3-MYB gene family serves as a pivotal regulatory factor in plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stresses. To investigate its function in the drought stress response of wild jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill. var. spinosa), a typical eco-economic forest species, this study performed genome-wide identification and relevant analyses of R2R3-MYB genes.
RESULTS: A total of 91 R2R3-MYB genes (designated as ZjMYB1 to ZjMYB91) were identified, which were unevenly distributed across 12 chromosomes. These genes mainly encode hydrophilic and unstable proteins, 97.8% of whi

Natural variation at the WRKY53-C518G SNP drives cold tolerance divergence between rice subspecies. The japonica-specific WRKY53518C allele, originating from Chinese wild rice and selected in temperate regions, confers cold tolerance by reducing GA repression to protect pollen fertility, and thus provides a valuable target for rice breeding. Cold tolerance at the booting stage (CTB), when inflorescence development begins, is a major factor limiting rice (Oryza sativa L.) productivity and geographical distribution. However, only a few cold-tolerance genes have been identified. We previously sh
