Mechanistic models can substantially contribute to population risk assessment to assess effects on population and to increase the relevance of the toxicity parameters estimated at an individual level. A trace elements study of various samples from the Keana brines field, middle Benue Trough was carried-out to determine the extent to which Pb-Zn-S and BaSO(4) mineralisations have affected the quality of the brines and the waters in the area. A gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GS/MS) method was developed for the multiple determination of pesticides in sediment. A survey measuring concentrations of nonylphenol (NP) and its ethoxylates (NPEs) in fish was performed in the Kalamazoo River, Michigan, USA, in 1999. For many decades, the copper-zinc (Cu-Zn) smelter at Flin Flon, Manitoba was North America's largest single-source mercury (Hg) emitter, 4th largest Canadian sulfur dioxide (SO2) emitter, and a major heavy metal emitter. Various improvements were made in Cu smelter and Zn refinery operations over the years, and the Cu-smelter was closed in 2010 because it could not meet SO2 reduction targets while the Zn refinery continued to operate. A study was made on the water quality of the rivers in Mongolia over the years 1949-1990 for the three river basins in the country. In most of the 72 monitoring stations, the water quality is governed by geological and hydrological characteristics; bicarbonate and calcium are the most abundant major ions.
