Dental infection simulating skin lesion.

Orocutaneous fistulas or cutaneous sinus, a tract of dental origin, is an uncommon but well-documented condition that usually requires emergency treatment. Such condition may be misdiagnosed by physicians and dentists and may sometimes be confused with bone and skin tumor, osteomyelitis, congenital fistula, salivary gland fistula, pyogenic granuloma, infected cyst, deep mycotic infection, and other pathologies. A case of facial sinus tract that was initially misdiagnosed by a physician as a nonodontogenic lesion is presented. Nonsurgical endodontic therapy was the treatment of choice for this

Inoculation bartonellosis in an adult: a case report.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) and bacillary angiomatosis (BA) are caused by a gram-negative bacilli classified under the genus Bartonella (formerly Rochalimaea). Patient history, symptoms, and histopathology often fall along a continuum; therefore, both conditions should be considered in the differential diagnosis. We report a case of an 83-year-old immunocompetent woman who presented with a pyogenic granuloma-like lesion on her dorsal left wrist. The histologic differential diagnosis included an inoculation site from a cat scratch infected with Bartonella and BA. Because the patient had only 1 le

Case report: bacillary angiomatosis with massive visceral lymphadenopathy.

Bacillary angiomatosis is a newly characterized infectious disease occurring mainly in patients with AIDS. Most patients have cutaneous angiomatosis lesions resembling Kaposi's sarcoma or pyogenic granuloma. Although the disease may be life-threatening if not treated, it is curable with appropriate antibiotic therapy. A patient had a fever, nightsweats, abdominal pain, pleural effusions, and asymmetric peripheral lymphadenopathy. Computed tomography of the chest and abdomen revealed a unique pattern of enhancement of lymph nodes that, to this research team's knowledge, has not been reported pr

Case report of dentigerous cyst of lower incisor.

This paper reviews the pathogenesis, clinical features and the behaviour of dentigerous cyst. A case of mandibular dentigerous cyst involving the incisor tooth (an unusual site) is presented to illustrate this pattern of behaviour. A recurrent pyogenic granuloma in the region of the lower incisors prevented the eruption of the lower left incisor with subsequent cystic formation around the tooth. The histological and radiological presentation is consistent with that of a dentigerous cyst. The significance of the potential of the cyst lining is stressed. The cyst was enucleated with the associat

[Cervico-cephalic hemangiomas and vascular malformations. Histopathological appearance and classification].

We present the histological and clinicopathological classification of hemangiomas and vascular malformations, such as was produced by the work of the study group on hemangiomas and vascular malformations of Lariboisière hospital. These lesions can first be classified according to the presence (phasic hemangioma of infants and pyogenic granuloma) or absence (malformations) of active cell proliferation. The malformations are classified according to their histological architecture and to the histological structure of the vessels they are composed of: capillary (hemangioma simplex, telangiectasias

Acne of the fulminans type following testosterone therapy in three excessively tall boys.

Ulcerative acne was observed in three boys who underwent long-term treatment with high doses of testosterone for excessively tall stature. Even after withdrawal of testosterone therapy, this devastating type of acne still persisted for several months. After starting isotretinoin treatment, two cases progressed to full-blown acne fulminans with systemic manifestations. In these two cases, oral isotretinoin therapy induced multiple lesions of hyperproliferative granulation tissue resembling pyogenic granuloma. Topical steroid treatment proved to be beneficial for this adverse effect. Systemic co

Topical timolol in dermatology: infantile haemangiomas and beyond.

Timolol, a nonselective β-adrenergic receptor blocker, is well-tolerated and is becoming increasingly popular in dermatology, especially in the management of infantile haemangioma (IH). Its effects are mainly due to vasoconstriction, inhibition of angiogenesis and keratinocyte migration promotion for re-epithelialization and wound healing. We review the evidence behind the use of timolol in several dermatological conditions including IH, pyogenic granulomas, Kaposi sarcoma, chronic wound healing, postsurgical wounds, acne vulgaris, rosacea, eczema and red scrotum syndrome.

Non-involuting congenital hemangiomas (NICH) with postnatal atypical growth: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Non-involuting congenital hemangiomas (NICH) are fully formed vascular tumors at birth, with a distinctive clinical, radiologic, and histopathological profile, and classically lack expansion or involution over time. We describe a series of NICH cases with atypical postnatal growth. METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed all NICH cases diagnosed from 2007 to 2017. We reviewed charts and photographic databases from our Vascular Anomalies Clinic. We included in the study all NICH with an atypical postnatal growth. Clinical data, imaging, and histopathology were analyzed. RESU

Reactive lesions of the oral cavity: A retrospective study on 2068 cases.

BACKGROUND: Reactive lesions of the oral cavity are non-neoplastic proliferations with very similar clinical appearance to benign neoplastic proliferation. This similarity is troublesome in the differential diagnosis. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and distribution of oral cavity reactive lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was a retrospective archive review. The medical records of 2068 patients with histopathologic diagnosis of oral cavity reactive lesions were studied. The patients' clinical data were registered and evaluated retrospectively. The obtained frequen

Pediatric localized reactive gingival lesions: a retrospective study from Israel.

PURPOSE: Chronic irritation of the gingiva causes localized reactive hyperplastic lesions (LRHLs), which are classified into: peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF); peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG); pyogenic granuloma (PG); and focal fibrous hyperplasia (FFH). The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of localized reactive hyperplastic lesions in Israeli children and adolescents. METHODS: All consecutive archival LRHL biopsies of the gingiva between 1989 and 2008 were included. Lesions were analyzed according to location and patients' age and gender. Our findings were compar

Peripheral giant cell granuloma associated with a dental implant. A case report.

Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a tumor-like pathologic condition arising on the buccal or lingual attached gingival or alveolar mucosa and the crest of the edentulous alveolar ridge, of uncertain etiology; it is probably a reactive lesion caused by chronic local irritants or trauma rather than a true neoplasm. PGCG is thought to originate from elements of the periodontal ligament or from the periosteum. Clinically, it appears as a sessile or broadly pedunculated, bluish to purple-red, fleshy or firm swelling with a frequently ulcerated surface. The occurrence of such a lesion may be

Periosteal osteosarcoma of the jaws: report of 2 cases.

Osteosarcoma (OS) occurs most often in the long bones. OS of the jaws has clinical and biologic aspects different from those of the long bones. They tend to occur at an older mean age, pain and swelling are more typical, and prognosis is more favorable. Nearly all OS shows a very prominent central intramedullary bone component. Only rarely are juxtacortical (peripheral) OS located in the jaws. There are 2 main types of juxtacortical OS, periosteal and parosteal. We present 2 cases of OS of the jaws where the clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings pointed to a diagnosis of periosteal OS.

The authors examined 195 epulides in order to point out distribution of this pathology in relation to some clinical, epidemiological and histopathological parameters. The Authors have found that the epulis is more prevalent in the female sex and in the anterior sextants. The epulides were subdivided on the basis of histopathological findings into: pyogenic granuloma (GP), giant cell granuloma (GGC), fibrous hyperplasia (IF), peripheral fibroma with calcification (FPC) and variety lympho-plasma-cellular (LP). Furthermore investigating the correlation between sex and histopathological variety it

Brucellar spondylodiscitis: A case series with focus on histopathological features.

Brucellar spondylodiscitis (BS) is the most common form of musculoskeletal brucellosis. The isolation of Brucella spp from blood, other body fluids or tissue cultures is the gold standard for definitive diagnosis of BS. BS shows a large histopathological spectrum of lesions with non-specific and granulomatous forms, and its histopathological features are not widely reported. This case series study reported the histopathological features of a series of 21 BS. Ten cases revealed nonspecific forms of BS. Lymphocytes were the predominant inflammatory cells in this group. In one case neutrophils we

Pyogenic liver abscess in children: some observations in the Espírito Santo State, Brazil.

Pyogenic liver abscess in children is uncommon in developed countries and there are few reports about the disease in developing countries including Brazil. As pyogenic liver abscesses in children are frequently diagnosed in Vitória (E. Santo State, Brazil), the records of admissions at the Children's Hospital (Hospital Infantil N.S. da Glória) were surveyed. Sixty-five cases of pyogenic liver abscess were observed over a period of three years, from May 1991 through April 1994 (mean of admissions of 2800 children/year). Fourty-seven cases occurred in boys (mean of ages 8.1 +/- 3.5 yr, median 8

Low-Grade Chondroid Variant Osteosarcoma: A Rare Case Report and Diagnostic Insights.

Osteosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor that primarily affects the jaw bones, with the low-grade chondroid variant being an uncommon subtype that often mimics benign lesions. This case report details the clinical presentation, histopathological findings, radiographic evidence, and treatment approach for a 23-year-old male who presented with recurrent gingival growth and pain in the lower anterior region. Initially misdiagnosed as a pyogenic granuloma, further evaluation revealed the presence of low-grade chondroid variant osteosarcoma. This case underscores the necessity for a thorough investig

Imiquimod-induced hypertrophic lupus erythematosus-like reaction.

Imiquimod is a topical immunomodulator that acts as an inducer of interferon (IFN)-a expression through Toll-like receptor (TLR)7 signaling with indications for the treatment of non-hyperkeratotic actinic keratosis of the face or scalp, superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and external genital and perianal warts. Imiquimod is also used off-label for nodular BCC, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, pyogenic granuloma, and melanoma. Imiquimod-induced lupus-like reactions have been reported. However, hypertrophic lupus erythematosus (HLE) is a rare variant of cutaneous lupus and imiquimod-induced hyper

Hemangioendothelioma of palate: A case report with review of literature.

Hemangioendothelioma commonly occurs in the superficial or deep soft tissue of the extremities, lungs, liver, bone and lymph nodes, with oral cavity being a rare location. It is usually benign but can show variable grades of malignancy. According to the histological presentation, hemangioendothelioma has been classified as epithelioid, Kaposiform, hobnail (Dabska-Retiform), epithelioid sarcoma like and composite. We present a case of ulcerated swelling of palate clinically diagnosed as pyogenic granuloma which presented a diagnostically challenging histological picture. We discuss the differen
