What are the primary influences on treatment decisions? How does this reflect on evidence-based practice? Indications from the discipline of speech and language therapy.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Four pillars of evidence underpin evidence-based behavioural practice: research evidence, practice evidence, patient evidence and contextual evidence. However, it is unknown which of these pillars or other factors are used by clinicians such as speech and language therapists (SLTS) when making treatment choices. The aim of this study was to identify the factors underpinning SLTs' treatment decisions and contextualize findings in terms of evidence-based practice (EBP). METHODS: Ethical approval was obtained for the electronic questionnaire-based study. A questio

The impact of choosing words carefully: an online investigation into imaging reporting strategies and best practice care for low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain clinical practice guidelines consistently recommend against the routine ordering of spinal imaging; however, imaging is frequently requested in primary care, without evidence of benefit. Imaging reports frequently identify degenerative features which are likely to be interpreted as 'abnormal', despite their high prevalence in symptom-free individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate whether post-imaging back-related perceptions are influenced by providing prior information about normal findings, and to compare the effect of receiving imaging results with best

Report from the UK and Eire Association of Genetic Nurses and Counsellors (AGNC) supervision working group on genetic counselling supervision.

The Association of Genetic Nurses and Counsellors (AGNC) is the professional organisation which represents genetic counsellors and genetic nurses in the United Kingdom (UK) and Eire. The AGNC recognises that genetic counselling supervision is instrumental to the practice, training and registration of genetic counsellors in the UK. The AGNC formed a Supervision Working Group, whose terms of reference were to collate information on supervision and create a list of 'best practice' recommendations for its genetic counsellor members. This report delivers the findings from the Supervision Working Gr

Navigating Nutrition Information in the Digital Era: How Tourism and Recreation Students Evaluate Online Dietary Advice?

Background/Objectives: The rapid expansion of digital platforms has transformed the way individuals access, interpret, and apply nutrition-related information in everyday life. Although online sources provide convenient access to dietary knowledge, they also contribute to the spread of simplified, conflicting, and potentially misleading messages. Young adults, including university students, increasingly rely on digital platforms for health-related information; however, little is known about how students from non-medical fields evaluate the credibility of online dietary advice. This qualitative

Empowering rural communities through designing patient navigation learning materials that bridge healthcare access knowledge gaps.

Limited knowledge regarding patient navigation services is a significant barrier for low-income rural communities in utilizing available healthcare resources. This study aimed to empower underserved populations in Southern Philippines by developing culturally appropriate patient navigation education materials that bridge this gap and enhance healthcare accessibility. Using a community-based participatory research design, focus group discussions with 40 residents and key informant interviews with six village staff from two remote communities were conducted. Determining Barriers to Dietary Change Among Medically Underserved Men With Prostate Cancer.

Prostate cancer (PCa) disproportionately affects Black men and men of low socioeconomic status, who are more likely to experience higher incidence, disease progression, and mortality. Despite this, cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death among men with localized disease. Therefore, lifestyle interventions, particularly diet-based, provide an opportunity to drastically improve outcomes. Little is known about how underserved men with PCa and their families perceive barriers to dietary change, including adaptation of the cardioprotective Mediterranean diet (MD). This qualitative s

"Why isn't fibre mentioned more often?" Conducting focus groups with an ageing population to promote dietary fibre-related awareness and starting the conversation.

The UK population is ageing and promoting healthy eating is a key priority. Dietary fibre fits this remit; however, despite the well-proven benefits, intake is substantially below the UK-based (Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition; SACN) 30 g/d recommendations. Face-to-face activities are a means to drive engagement with the topic and identify viable age-suitable strategies to modulate future intake. Community living older adults (n = 34; 65+) were recruited to partake in focus groups to: (1) discuss healthy eating and challenges; (2) raise awareness of dietary fibre and understand knowl

Mixed Method Study of Drivers and Obstacles to Exposure-reducing Behaviors to Endocrine-disrupting Chemicals During Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). However, there is limited evidence on the behavioral determinants of exposure-reducing practices during pregnancy. This gap underscores the need for mixed-methods inquiry. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to identify drivers and obstacles influencing EDC exposure-reducing behaviors (EDC-RB) among pregnant Korean women, guided by an extended theory of planned behavior. METHODS: A convergent mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative data were collected from 200 pregnant women through struc

Understanding community antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance in Sub-Saharan Africa: A grassroots perspective from Enugu, Nigeria.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health crisis, especially in low-and middle-income countries where antibiotic access is insufficiently regulated and health systems are under-resourced. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the community is often the primary site of antibiotics decision-making, shaped by informal markets, structural barriers, and cultural norms. This study investigates antimicrobial use behaviours, perceptions of AMR, and motivations for inappropriate antibiotics use and what might motivate future change, among diverse communities in Nigeria. Using a mixed-methods design, d

Implementation of two non-drug pain prescriptions for musculoskeletal pain in primary care clinics.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain affects over 50 million Americans and is the main reason for primary care consultations. Clinical practice guidelines recommend use of non-drug therapies as first-line treatments. However, adoption and implementation of these guidelines are hindered by logistics. Exercise and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are effective non-drug strategies for managing chronic musculoskeletal pain, both of which have shown to reduce opioid usage. This study presents the results of implementing the Bundle for Exercises and TENS (BEsT) in primary care to facilitate pr

"I believe it when there is an expert next to me:" a qualitative analysis on the perceptions and experiences of pregnant women to self-monitor blood pressure in Lombok, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a leading cause of maternal deaths and require close monitoring of blood pressure (BP) to mitigate potential adverse effects. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends self-monitoring of blood pressure (SMBP) among women with HDP; however, there is limited research on its acceptability and feasibility in low- and middle-income contexts. We explored pregnant women's perceptions and attitudes towards SMBP, as well as practical considerations for SMBP by leveraging a smartphone-based BP measurement application in Lombok, Indonesia. M
