Prevalence of factors influencing cancer risk in women with lupus: social habits, reproductive issues, and obesity.

OBJECTIVE: There is mounting evidence that hematological malignancies are increased in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and the risk of certain solid tumors may also be increased. The pathogenesis may be different for the 2 processes: risk of hematological malignancies in SLE may be due to chronic lymphocyte stimulation, while risk of solid tumors may be influenced by factors such as obesity and reproductive habits. We aimed to determine prevalence in a lupus cohort of selected factors that influence the risk of cancer, and to compare this prevalence to that of the general population. METH…

Relationship of blood lead levels to personal hygiene habits in lead battery workers: Taiwan, 1991-1997.

BACKGROUND: The blood lead concentrations of workers in lead battery factories are more than 4 times higher than those of the general population in Taiwan. Therefore, efforts are needed to reduce lead exposure in this high-risk population. A health promotion program on personal habits that reduce lead exposure has been carried out in a lead battery factory since 1991. This study investigated the longitudinal relationship of workers' blood lead concentrations and personal hygiene habits from 1991 through 1997. METHODS: In each of the 7 years of the study, occupational physicians questioned wor…

[Use of oral contraceptives in Denmark 1980-1990 and smoking habits among fertile women in 1990].

The purpose of this study has been to chart the changes in usage of different types of oral contraceptives (the pill) throughout the 1980's, as well to estimate the extent to which these changes can be expected to influence the incidence of cerebral thromboembolic attacks amongst fertile women. The use of different types of the pill and smoking habits in different age groups are also investigated. The work is based om cross-sectional studies during the period 1980-1990; the use of the pill is documented by national sales statistics from 1980-1990 as well as from questionnaires answered by 1370…

Shear Wave Elastography in Children: Normative Values and the Impact of Healthy Habits in a Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: Biomechanical properties of the musculoskeletal system are important to understand muscle function, but they are difficult to assess noninvasively. Shear wave elastography (SWE) allows objective quantification of muscle elasticity. However, normative data and the influence of lifestyle habits on muscle elasticity in children remain unclear, particularly across multiple upper and lower limb muscles and in relation to modifiable healthy behaviors. The main objective was to assess muscle elasticity at rest and during maximum passive stretching (MPS) in children using SWE, and to addre…

[Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia initially diagnosed by long-standing walking habit: an autopsy case].

Here, we report a man clinically diagnosed with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia triggered by a long-standing walking habit, and pathologically diagnosed with corticobasal degeneration at death (aged 78 years). Walking habits began approximately 65 years of age for diabetes management, involving daily walks of 7-8 km along the same route. Unlike stereotypical roaming, his persistent walking with a transfixed expression suggested an impulse-control disorder in which the urge to walk could not be suppressed, combined with compulsive, ritualistic behavior. Lesion distribution in cortico…

Habit as a therapeutic component in psychological treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder: A randomised controlled feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP) represents a first-line intervention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but many patients either do not tolerate or respond to it. Habit-reversal therapy (HRT) is used to treat a variety of disorders characterised by repetitive behaviours. HRT involves learning a non-pathological motor habit to help extinguish repetitive behaviour. Augmenting ERP with components of HRT represents a novel candidate treatment approach for OCD. AIMS: A randomised controlled trial (RCT) investigating the feasibilit

The mediating role of dietary habits in the causal relationships between frailty, depression, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Frailty, depression, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are prevalent and interrelated conditions, particularly among older adults. Although dietary factors are implicated in these conditions, their causal relationships remain uncertain. This study employs Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the bidirectional causal associations among dietary habits, frailty, depression, and GERD. We analyzed genome-wide association studies summary data for the frailty index and GERD from multiple datasets, along with dietary habit data from the UK Biobank. Depression data were derived from the…

Characteristics of the gut microbiota in gestational diabetes mellitus associated with poor dietary habits: An observational study.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasingly associated with alterations in gut microbiota, particularly under the influence of poor dietary habits during pregnancy. However, specific microbial characteristics associated with GDM remain unclear. To address this, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to compare the gut microbiota of pregnant women with GDM and healthy pregnant individuals. We conducted amplicon sequence variant analysis, assessed α- and β-diversity, performed taxonomic profiling, and applied linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) as well as random forest modeling to…
