Postural instability does not necessarily correlate to poor performance: case in point.

BACKGROUND: It is very important for surgeons who perform minimally invasive surgery (MIS) to maintain proper postural stability, which kinematic research can determine. Previous studies in surgical ergonomics have shown that postural stability is correlated to instrument type, task difficulty, and skill level. What should also be considered is that surgeons may strategically change stance or joint movement to achieve better surgical outcomes while potentially subjecting themselves to greater risk. Background information about subjects, e.g., joint impairment, should be considered an important

Studies of malformation syndromes of man XXXXI B: nosologic studies in the Hanhart and the Möbius syndrome.

We reviewed etiologic and phenotypic aspects of those orofacial and limb anomalies usually diagnosed as Hanhart syndrome and Mobius syndrome but also those described, among others, under names such as aglossia-adactylia syndrome, gloss-palatine ankylosis, ankyloglossia superior, peromelia and micrognathia, cleft palate/lateral synechiae syndrome, and the Charlie M. syndrome. By coding the degree of severity of the limb defects it was possible to compare these cases quantitatively and to determine the nosologic significance of associated cranial nerve palsies and chest abnormalities. We analyze

Gene p63: In ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia clefting, ankyloblepharon-ectodermal dysplasia, Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: An analysis was made of three different syndromes associated with p63 gene mutations, known as ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome (EEC), ankyloblepharon-ectodermal dysplasia clefting syndrome (AEC or Hay-Wells) and Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome (RHS). The postoperative complications associated with their cleft reconstructions were also evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extensive demographic information, in particular of the clinical appearances, associated malformations, and the types and complications of the reconstructive surgical procedures, were recorded of these sy

Kingella kingae and Viral Infections.

Kingella kingae (K. kingae) is an oropharyngeal commensal agent of toddlers and the primary cause of osteoarticular infections in 6-23-month-old children. Knowing that the oropharynx of young children is the reservoir and the portal of entry of K. kingae, these results suggested that a viral infection may promote K. kingae infection. In this narrative review, we report the current knowledge of the concomitance between K. kingae and viral infections. This hypothesis was first suggested because some authors described that symptoms of viral infections were frequently concomitant with K. kingae in

Gastrointestinal perforation during regorafenib administration in a case with hepatic metastases of colon cancer.

Although common side effects of regorafenib include hand-and-foot syndrome and diarrhoea, the incidence of gastrointestinal perforation is reportedly unknown. We describe our experience with the case of a 65-year-old woman treated with regorafenib as a third-line therapy for progressive caecal cancer with multiple hepatic metastases after 4 and 6 courses of systemic mFOLFOX6 + bevacizumab (BV) and FOLFIRI + BV chemotherapy, respectively. The patient used regorafenib for 32 days but visited our hospital with abdominal pain during the second course. She was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and

Correlation analysis of EV71 detection and case severity in hand, foot, and mouth disease in the Hunan Province of China.

An increase in the incidence of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases has been observed in the Hunan province of mainland China since 2009 with a particularly higher level of severe cases in 2010-2012. Intestinal viruses of the picornaviridae family are responsible for the human syndrome associated with HFMD with enterovirus 71 (EV71) and Coxsackievirus A16 (Cox A16) being the most common causative strains. HFMD cases associated with EV71 are generally more severe with an increased association of morbidity and mortality. In this study, the etiology surveillance data of HFMD cases in Hunan

Monodactylous limbs and abnormal genitalia are associated with hemizygosity for the human 2q31 region that includes the HOXD cluster.

Vertebrates have four clusters of Hox genes (HoxA, HoxB, HoxC, and HoxD). A variety of expression and mutation studies indicate that posterior members of the HoxA and HoxD clusters play an important role in vertebrate limb development. In humans, mutations in HOXD13 have been associated with type II syndactyly or synpolydactyly, and, in HOXA13, with hand-foot-genital syndrome. We have investigated two unrelated children with a previously unreported pattern of severe developmental defects on the anterior-posterior (a-p) limb axis and in the genitalia, consisting of a single bone in the zeugopod

A patient with germ-line gain-of-function PDGFRB p.N666H mutation and marked clinical response to imatinib.

PurposeHeterozygous germ-line activating mutations in PDGFRB cause Kosaki and Penttinen syndromes and myofibromatosis. We describe a 10-year-old child with a germ-line PDGFRB p.N666H mutation who responded to the tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib by inhibition of PDGFRB.MethodsThe impact of p.N666H on PDGFRB function and sensitivity to imatinib was studied in cell culture.ResultsCells expressing the p.N666H mutation showed constitutive PDGFRB tyrosine phosphorylation. PDGF-independent proliferation was abolished by imatinib at 1 μM concentration. Patient fibroblasts showed constitutive recept

Limb defects associated with major congenital anomalies: clinical and epidemiological study from the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Monitoring Systems.

Although limb defects associated with other congenital anomalies are rarely studied, they may provide insights into limb development that may be useful for etiologic studies and public health monitoring. We pooled data from 11 birth defect registries that are part of the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Monitoring Systems. We identified 666 infants, born from 1983 through 1993, who had a non-syndromal limb defect plus at least one other major malformation (rate 12.9/100,000 population). We used observed/expected ratios and log-linear models to detect association patterns. We found

Preferential paternal origin of microdeletions caused by prezygotic chromosome or chromatid rearrangements in Sotos syndrome.

Sotos syndrome (SoS) is characterized by pre- and postnatal overgrowth with advanced bone age; a dysmorphic face with macrocephaly and pointed chin; large hands and feet; mental retardation; and possible susceptibility to tumors. It has been shown that the major cause of SoS is haploinsufficiency of the NSD1 gene at 5q35, because the majority of patients had either a common microdeletion including NSD1 or a truncated type of point mutation in NSD1. In the present study, we traced the parental origin of the microdeletions in 26 patients with SoS by the use of 16 microsatellite markers at or fla

Severe Erythromelalgia Pain Attack in a Young Lebanese Woman Leading to Hospitalization: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Erythromelalgia is a rare neurovascular syndrome characterized by intense, episodic burning pain that primarily affects the feet and hands and, occasionally, the face. Symptoms are often triggered by heat and exercise, with relief typically achieved through cooling methods. However, improper use of these techniques can lead to serious complications, such as trench foot and cellulitis. The condition can also have significant psychological effects, contributing to anxiety and depression. An 18-year-old Lebanese woman with primary erythromelalgia and a family history of the condition presented wi

Acrally distributed dermatoses: Vascular dermatoses (purpura and vasculitis).

Purpuric lesions appear in acral distribution in a variety of conditions and often provide clues to the clinical diagnosis. Purpuric means "hemorrhagic"-that is, the lesions do not blanch from pressure. This review focuses on dermatoses that produce hemorrhagic lesions in acral distribution from the large groups of the vasculitic diseases and their mimics. Cutaneous small vessel vasculitis is confined to the skin, involves mainly postcapillary venules, and has the hallmark manifestation of palpable purpura. Henoch-Schönlein purpura is an immune complex-mediated systemic vasculitis of the small

Chemotherapy-induced acral erythema with involvement of the face and neck: A case report.

Chemotherapy-induced acral erythema (CIAE) is a cutaneous response to diverse chemotherapeutic drug administration. These drugs cause symmetrical and painful erythema of palmoplantar surfaces. Bulla formation, desquamation, and subsequent reepithelialization may occur. Commonly, the lesions slowly resolve over 7-15 days, through desquamation, followed by regeneration of the skin. Here, we described a case of CIAE, with involvement of face and neck in a patient treated for breast cancer using a number of chemotherapeutic agents. Face involvement in CIAE has not been previously reported in the l

A comprehensive review of reported heritable noggin-associated syndromes and proposed clinical utility of one broadly inclusive diagnostic term: NOG-related-symphalangism spectrum disorder (NOG-SSD).

The NOG gene encodes noggin, a secreted polypeptide that is important for regulating multiple signaling pathways during human development, particularly in cartilage and bone. The hallmark of NOG-related syndromes is proximal symphalangism, defined by abnormal fusion of the proximal interphalangeal joints of the hands and feet. Many additional features secondary to NOG mutations are commonly but inconsistently observed, including a characteristic facies with a hemicylindrical nose, congenital conductive hearing loss due to stapes fixation, and hyperopia. The variable clinical presentations led
