Two cases of durvalumab-induced Evans syndrome in biliary tract cancer.

We present two cases of Evans syndrome (ES) during durvalumab monotherapy after combination chemotherapy with durvalumab for advanced hilar cholangiocarcinoma. The patients were men aged 71 and 73 years with satisfactory performance status. They received eight cycles of gemcitabine, cisplatin, and durvalumab, followed by durvalumab monotherapy (five and six cycles, respectively) for a total of approximately 11 months. Subsequently, they developed autoimmune hemolytic anemia, characterized by reticulocytosis, indirect hyperbilirubinemia, elevated lactate dehydrogenase levels, and a positive dir

Health-Related Quality of Life, Illness Perception, Stigmatization and Optimism Among Hematology Patients: Two Exploratory Path Models.

Background and Objectives: Hematological diseases can cause lasting physical and social impairments. Illness perception and emotional functioning, influenced by stigmatization and optimism, may shape these outcomes, yet their combined effects on health-related quality of life remain underexplored. This study investigates their direct and indirect links with physical and social functioning. Materials and Methods: Ninety-six hematology patients completed the EORTC QoL Scale, the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, the Stigma Scale for Chronic Illness, and the Revised Life Orientation Test. A

Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Presenting as Spontaneous Abortion Amidst Tropical Fever Season: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematologic malignancy with diverse and often nonspecific clinical manifestations. This report discusses a 30-year-old female presenting with fever for six days and per vaginal (PV) bleeding persisting for three days during the tropical fever season. Initial evaluation indicated pancytopenia, leading to considerations of infectious, nutritional, or hematologic etiologies. A detailed history revealed 10 weeks of amenorrhea with a positive urine pregnancy test (UPT) confirmed pregnancy, which was further supported by ultrasonography (USG), suggesting incomplete

Celiac Disease Masquerading as Extreme Thrombocytosis and Severe Anemia in a 52-Year-Old Female Patient: A Rare Case Presentation and Literature Review.

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by an immune-mediated response to gluten, resulting in small intestinal mucosal damage. While gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are commonly associated with CD, atypical presentations can pose diagnostic challenges, particularly when hematological abnormalities are the primary manifestation. We report a case of a 52-year-old female patient who presented with paraesthesia, numbness in her hands and feet, marked thinness, extreme thrombocytosis, severe anemia, and mild electrolyte imbalance. Physical examination was unremarkable, ex

Improved engraftment and therapeutic efficacy by human genome-edited hematopoietic stem cells with Busulfan-based myeloablation.

Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation using genome-edited cells can become a definitive therapy for hematological and non-hematological disorders with neurological involvement. Proof-of-concept studies using human genome-edited hematopoietic stem cells have been hindered by the low efficiency of engraftment of the edited cells in the bone marrow and their modest efficacy in the CNS. To address these challenges, we tested a myeloablative conditioning regimen based on Busulfan in an immunocompromised model of mucopolysaccharidosis type 1. Compared with sub-lethal irradiation, Busulf

Severe ADAMTS-13 deficiency without hemolysis as a cause of cryptogenic stroke: A single center case series.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral Infarction due to Severe ADAMTS-13 Deficiency (CISAD) remains an underrecognized cause of cryptogenic stroke. Despite the absence of classic hematologic features, CISAD confers a risk of recurrent ischemic events if not promptly identified and treated. Increased clinical awareness is essential to prompt appropriate laboratory testing and reduce stroke recurrence. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at Montefiore Medical Center to identify patients with ischemic stroke and severe ADAMTS-13 deficiency from January 2017 to June 2025. Of 235 screened patients

Pharmacokinetic study comparing doxorubicin concentrations after chemoembolization or intravenous administration in dogs with naturally occurring nonresectable hepatic carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Chemoembolization is a viable treatment option for patients with nonresectable hepatic carcinoma (HC) and may allow delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs with decreased systemic toxicity. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVE: Compare the serum concentrations of doxorubicin after chemoembolization or IV administration in the same patient. We hypothesized that locoregional delivery may result in increased tumor chemotherapeutic drug concentrations, reflected by decreased measurable serum drug concentrations. Adverse hematological events were hypothesized to be decreased after locoregional delivery. A

[Invasive mucormycosis in pediatric hematology patients--single-center experience from 2005-2010].

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal disease severely complicating treatment of patients with hematologic diseases. Effective therapy is represented by the combination of surgery and amphotericin B administration and early initiation of the therapy is necessary for favorable outcome. The first clinical symptoms are usually non-specific and this can lead to late therapy onset. The objective of this retrospective work was to determine the frequency, risk factors and outcome of invasive mucormycosis in pediatric hematology patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study cohort comprised 399

Hematology-centered characterization of β-glucan-mediated disease trajectory modulation during rock bream iridovirus (RBIV) infection.

Rock bream iridovirus (RBIV) causes a rapid systemic infection, severe hematological disruption, and high mortality in rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus). Although β-glucan is widely used as an immunostimulant in aquaculture, its influence on RBIV disease progression remains poorly understood. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of different β-glucan administration schedules on survival, viral dissemination, and blood-associated physiological responses during experimental RBIV infection. Among the tested schedules, the 300 μg/fish Pre + Post regimen (-2 and + 2 dpi) provided the greate

Successful Haplo-Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia in a Child With Underlying Thrombocytopenia-Absent Radius Syndrome: A Unique Case.

BACKGROUND: Thrombocytopenia-absent radius (TAR) syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by bilateral radial aplasia with preserved thumbs and early-onset thrombocytopenia. While hematologic and skeletal abnormalities define the condition, its association with hematologic malignancies is extremely rare, with only a few reported cases of leukemia. Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) is an uncommon pediatric myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm frequently linked to RAS pathway mutations. To our knowledge, JMML has not previously been reported in association with TAR syndr

Mendelian randomization analysis reveals the combined effects of epigenetics and telomere biology in hematologic cancers.

BACKGROUND: Telomere shortening and epigenetic modifications are key factors in aging and hematologic diseases. This study investigates the relationship of telomere length and epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) with hematologic cancers, blood cells, and biochemical markers through the epigenetic clocks. METHODS: This study primarily utilizes genome-wide association studies of populations of European descent as instrumental variables, exploring the causal relationships between exposures and outcomes through a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. MR techniques include

Effects of fetal number on acute phase proteins, cortisol, and hematological parameters in ewes during the periparturient period.

Many subclinical diseases associated with inflammation occur in sheep during the periparturient period. Clinical symptoms are usually detected at an advanced stage of the disease; therefore, there are considerable risks of permanent health disorders in fetuses or dams. Determination of acute phase proteins (APPs) as markers of inflammation may allow for an earlier diagnosis and effective treatment. Furthermore, multi-fetus pregnancies are often associated with hematological disturbances. The study objective was to compare plasma concentrations of serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp), fibrin

Improvement in pain interference after palliative radiotherapy for solid and hematologic painful tumors: a secondary analysis of a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated that patients with painful hematologic tumors were more likely to experience pain response after palliative radiotherapy (RT) than those with painful solid tumors. However, it is unknown whether change in pain interference differs between these two tumor types. In the present study, we carried out a secondary analysis of our previous prospective observational study to investigate this matter. METHODS: From patients undergoing palliative RT to treat painful tumors, Brief Pain Inventory data were collected at the start of RT and at the 1-, 2-, and 3- month
