Condoms act as mechanical barriers to genital infection. In vitro models demonstrate that condoms are almost impermeable to viruses. We report a case of viral laryngitis due to HSV in an adult. The patient was a 61-year-old female alcoholic. She presented with fever and stridor and developed sepsis and multiorgan failure. She was treated with antibiotics to no effect and died 14 days after hospitalisation. Post mortem histology of the larynx showed an acute pseudomembranous inflammation with the classical morphology of HSV infection. An immunohistochemical reaction for HSV was positive.

The progression of herpes simplex-2 genital infection in pregnant mice was studied by detection of viral antigens using immunoperoxidase in tissue sections, electron microscopy and virus isolation. The majority of mice (66.66%) died at 8-9 days post-inoculation. Abortions were observed in 69.23% of the infected mice along with impairment of labor and delivery. Intracranial infection after neurosurgical intervention most often is caused by bacteria. A rare case of fatal herpes simplex encephalitis after removal of a meningioma is described and similar cases reported in the literature are reviewed. Recent diagnostic tools, including detection of herpes viral DNA sequences by polymerase chain reaction, complement clinical suspicion and facilitate mandatory early diagnosis, because herpes encephalitis, without rapid initiation of treatment, may lead to severe disability or death.
