Risk of superior gluteal nerve and gluteus medius muscle injury during femoral nail insertion.

BACKGROUND: Abduction weakness and limping is a well-recognized complication of closed antegrade insertion of femoral nails. Iatrogenic injuries to the superior gluteal nerve and the gluteus medius muscle are the most likely contributing factors. The purpose of this study of cadavers was to assess the risk of nerve and muscle injury with various lower-limb positions used during nail insertion. METHODS: We studied thirteen hips of ten formalin-fixed adult cadavers. With the cadaver in the full lateral position, a 9-mm reamer was introduced in a retrograde fashion from the intercondylar notch a

Scores on the safe functional motion test are associated with prevalent fractures and fall history.

PURPOSE: The Safe Functional Motion test (SFM) was developed to measure observed body mechanics and functional motion associated with spine load, balance, strength, and flexibility during everyday tasks to profile modifiable risks for osteoporotic fracture. This cross-sectional study evaluated the associations between SFM score and history of vertebral compression fracture (VCF), hip fracture, and injurious falls, all established predictors of future risk. METHOD: An osteoporosis clinic database was queried for adults with an initial SFM score and corresponding data for prevalent VCF and/or h

A classification method for neurogenic heterotopic ossification of the hip.

BACKGROUND: Existing classifications for heterotopic ossification (HO) do not include all HO types; nor do they consider the anatomy of the involved joint or the neurological injury. Therefore, we performed this study to propose and evaluate a classification according to the location of neurogenic HO and the neurological injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied the files of 24 patients/33 hips with brain or spinal cord injury and neurogenic HO of the hip treated with excision, indomethacin, and radiation therapy. We classified patients according to the Brooker classification scheme as well a

A life without pain: a case report.

Congenital insensitivity to pain is a rare condition with an abnormality of interpretation of painful stimuli. This case report illustrates how a sequence of injuries after no or trivial trauma incapacitated a young boy. Especially the bilateral collapse and dislocation of the hip is an unusual sequela of this disorder.

Lower eccentric hamstring strength and single leg hop for distance predict hamstring injury in PETE students.

Hamstring injuries have not been under research in physical education teacher education (PETE) students so far. Within the frame of the development of an injury prevention program, for this study we conducted an analysis of modifiable risk factors for hamstring injuries in PETE students. Hamstring injuries of 102 freshmen bachelor PETE students were registered prospectively during one academic year. Eighty-one students completed maximum muscle strength tests of hip extensors, hamstrings, quadriceps (isometric) and hamstrings (eccentric) at the start of the academic year. Sixty-nine of the latt

Use of self-organizing maps to study sex- and speed-dependent changes in running biomechanics.

BACKGROUND: Up to 79% of runners get injured every year, with higher rates of injuries occurring in females than males. A self-organizing map (SOM) is a type of artificial neural network that can be used to inspect large datasets and study coordination patterns. The purpose of this study was to use an SOM to study the effects of sex and speed on biomechanical coordination patterns. METHOD: Thirty-two healthy runners ran on an instrumented treadmill at their long slow distance speed (LSD) and at speed 30% faster (LSD + 30%). Vertical ground reaction force (vGRF), vertical tibial acceleration,

Surgical treatment of femoral head fractures.

BACKGROUND: Femoral head fractures (FHF) are uncommon and generally caused by high-energy injuries. Surgical reduction with stable fixation of large fragments is believed to have the best outcomes. This retrospective study intended to report outcomes with surgical treatment at our institution and tried to establish treatment algorithm. METHODS: Through the 6-year period (2003-2008), 35 FHF in 35 consecutive patients (average, 30 years) were surgically treated. All FHF were caused by high-energy trauma. Patients' general condition was stabilized first and hip dislocation was manually reduced i

Management of femoral head fractures through surgical hip dislocation (SHD): a demanding but safe technique.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral head fractures considered to be rare injuries. Surgical intervention is indicated for major fragment displacement or in the presence of instability. Surgical management can be achieved through either Anterior, posterior, and trans-trochanteric surgical approaches. Surgical hip dislocation (SHD) has been advocated by many authors to be a safe and effective alternative way of management. The aim of this study was to report on the accuracy of fracture reduction, procedure safety, and outcomes of using SHD in the management of femoral head fractures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Be

Effectiveness of Neuromuscular Training Based on the Neuromuscular Risk Profile.

BACKGROUND: The effects of targeted neuromuscular training (TNMT) on movement biomechanics associated with the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are currently unknown. Purpose/Hypotheses: To determine the effectiveness of TNMT specifically designed to increase trunk control and hip strength. The hypotheses were that (1) TNMT would decrease biomechanical and neuromuscular factors related to an increased ACL injury risk and (2) TNMT would decrease these biomechanical and neuromuscular factors to a greater extent in athletes identified as being at a high risk for future ACL injuri

Bilateral traumatic anterior dislocation of the hip with an unstable lumbar burst fracture.

Traumatic anterior dislocation of the hip is rare. Bilateral traumatic anterior dislocation is an even rarer injury; indeed, only 5 cases have been reported in the English literature. We describe a case of a bilateral traumatic anterior dislocation of the hip and a concomitant unstable lumbar burst fracture following a mechanism of injury distinctly different from other reports.

Biomechanic Differences Between Anticipated and Unanticipated Volleyball Block Jump: Implications for Lower Limb Injury Risk.

Volleyball is a high-intensity sport characterized by repetitive jumping, sudden directional changes, and overhead movements, all of which significantly increase the risk of injuries, particularly to the shoulders, knees, and ankles. Despite the frequency of injuries caused by actions like blocking and spiking, there has been limited research focused on the specific biomechanical risk factors unique to volleyball. This study aimed to investigate the lower limb biomechanics during block jumps in both the dominant and non-dominant directions, under both anticipated and unanticipated conditions,

Vitamin D Deficiency in Patients With Low-Energy Hip Fractures in Accordance With the Mediterranean Paradox.

Introduction Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is considered one of the leading causes of poor bone quality. It may also be related to severe muscular weakness, especially in the elderly, which leads to frequent falls. Thus, VDD might be associated with fragility fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine in this age category. In this cross-sectional study, our goal was to present vitamin D levels in an elderly Mediterranean population with hip fractures and to assess whether its levels are related to the incidence or prevention of such injuries. Methods Between January and December 2021, 140 patients ag

Atraumatic Hip Instability.

Atraumatic hip instability is an increasingly recognized source of pain and hip dysfunction. It can result from numerous causes, including femoroacetabular impingement, prior trauma, injury to the capsuloligamentous structures, and idiopathic etiologies. Occult hip instability can be a challenging diagnosis that requires careful attention to, and interpretation of, history, physical examination, and radiographic imaging findings. Iatrogenic hip instability is a potential complication of both open and arthroscopic hip-preserving surgical procedures that can have catastrophic results. Atraumatic
