Perceptions and Needs of Stakeholders Regarding MyPal Project's Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome App: Cross-Sectional Qualitative Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is crucial for patients with life-threatening and serious diseases such as cancer, as it addresses their physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs. Hematological malignancies significantly contribute to global cancer cases, impacting both older adults and children. To meet the increasing demand for palliative care, electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) interventions offer valuable insights into patient monitoring and treatment decision-making. The MyPal project developed a digital ePRO solution to improve palliative care by enabling structured symptom reporti

Evaluating the efficacy and acceptability of a digital-based management system for diabetes during pregnancy: protocol for an observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes during pregnancy poses significant health risks for both mothers and their offspring and requires comprehensive management throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period. The increasing global prevalence of diabetes during pregnancy requires effective and efficient management. The current healthcare system can be challenging because of need for frequent hospital visits and limited availability of gestational diabetes (GDM) specialists. This study investigates the impact of a digital-based management system designed to support women with diabetes from pregnancy through the

Rethinking obstetric violence and the "neglect of neglect": the silence of a labour ward milieu in a South African district hospital.

BACKGROUND: Research into the mistreatment of women during childbirth has increased over recent years. Overt violence is an important focus of research, but recently there has been increasing recognition that there are other ways in which women in labour may be uncared for or even hurt. As part of a larger study focussing on staff responses to stillbirths, we wanted to gain contextual information on how high risk pregnancies are handled in general in Khayelitsha Hospital, a district hospital in an impoverished urban setting in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. This health care system

Victimization of People With Severe Mental Illness Outside and Within the Mental Health Care System: Results on Prevalence and Risk Factors From a Multicenter Study.

We performed a cross-sectional study using a self-reporting survey to assess lifetime violent and non-violent victimization in people with severe mental illness experienced both inside (i.e., any service providing mental health care such as psychiatric hospitals, psychosocial rehabilitative programs, or outpatient care) and outside (i.e., in the personal life of the participants) of the mental health care system. We recruited 170 participants from 20 community mental health facilities. We built logistic regression models to assess potential risk factors for victimization inside the mental heal

General Surgery Residents' Perception of Feedback: We Can Do Better.

BACKGROUND: Feedback (FB) regarding perioperative care is essential in general surgery residents' (GSRs) training. We hypothesized that FB would be distributed unevenly across preoperative (PrO), intraoperative (IO), and postoperative (PO) continuum of the perioperative period. We aimed to compare results between university- and community-hospital settings planning to institute structured, formalized FB in a large health care system operating multiple surgery residency programs in departments that are linked strategically. METHODS: Quantitative, cross-sectional, Likert scale anonymous surveys

[Territorial-based management of patients with cancer on active treatment following the Piacenza (north Italy) Model. Results of 4 consecutive years.].

INTRODUCTION: The natural history of cancer has radically changed in the last decade. The burden of travel from patient's residence to health care providers is an important issue that can influence access to diagnosis and treatment of cancer; however this issue is quite neglect by the medical community and by the national health system. In addition, community care in the oncology field is actually debated. METHODS: In the district of Piacenza an innovative model to deliver onco-hematologic treatment near the residence of patients was initiated some years ago. The oncologic and hematologic tre

Nurses' Ethical Reasoning About Digital Ethical Risks: A Vignette-Elicited Qualitative Study.

AIM: This qualitative study aimed to explore how nurses reason ethically about potential digital ethical risks arising from the routine use of digital systems in clinical practice and the strategies they propose to address these risks in response to vignette-based scenarios. BACKGROUND: Digital systems shape nursing documentation, monitoring, communication, education, and decision-making. Although they support care, digital ethical risks may arise when digital outputs are accepted without clinical verification, patients are not adequately informed, or data protection is weak. DESIGN: A vigne

COVID-19 Healthcare Inequity: Lessons Learned from Annual Influenza Vaccination Rates to Mitigate COVID-19 Vaccine Disparities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has infected 33 million Americans and resulted in more than 600,000 deaths as of late Spring 2021. Black, Indigenous, and Latinx (BIL) people are disproportionately infected, hospitalized, and dying. Effective vaccines were rapidly developed and have been widely available in the United States since their initial rollout in late 2020-early 2021 but vaccination rates in BIL communities have remained low compared with non-BIL communities. Limited access to the vaccine, lack of customized information, and mistrust of the medical system, all contribute to vaccine hesitancy and

ResQFoam for the Treatment of Non-Compressible Hemorrhage on the Front Line.

Noncompressible torso hemorrhage is the leading cause of potentially survivable death on the battlefield. While medical advances have decreased the rate of "died of wounds" to less than 5%, significant treatment limitations in pre-hospital care remain. To address this persistent capability gap, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency launched the Wound Stasis System program in 2010. Under that program, Arsenal Medical, in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, developed a novel, self-expanding polyurethane foam that rapidly treats major abdominal bl

Invasive liver abscess syndrome caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae: first Tanzanian experience.

Over the past 20 years there has been growing awareness of community-acquired primary liver abscess caused by strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) especially in patients of Asian descent, a minority of which are characterized by metastatic spread. A common and frequent destructive complication is endophthalmitis as well as the involvement of the central nervous system (CNS), causing suppurative meningitis or brain abscess. Here we report a case of invasive liver abscess caused by K. pneumoniae in an Asian patient who presented to our hospital in Tanzania with bilateral lower limb s

Wall Teichoic Acid in Staphylococcus aureus Host Interaction.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major opportunistic human pathogen that frequently causes disease in community and hospital settings. Nasal colonization is an important risk factor for developing invasive disease. Cell wall-associated glycopolymers called wall teichoic acids (WTAs) contribute to efficient nasal colonization by S. aureus. In addition, WTAs are key targets of the host immune system due to their accessibility and high abundance on the S. aureus cell surface. In this review we discuss the new insights into interactions between the host and S. aureus WTA and the implications of these in
