Educating international students about tuberculosis and infections associated with travel to visit friends and relatives (VFR-travel).

BACKGROUND: International students in Victoria, Australia, originate from over 140 different countries. They are over-represented in disease notifications for tuberculosis and travel-associated infections, including enteric fever, hepatitis A, and malaria. We describe a public health initiative aimed to increase awareness of these illnesses among international students and their support staff. METHODS: We identified key agencies including student support advisors, medical practitioners, health insurers, and government and professional organisations. We developed health education materials tar

Clinical manifestations of reported Lyme disease cases in Ontario, Canada: 2005-2014.

Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne disease in Ontario, Canada. We describe the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of LD in Ontario and examine trends in the incidence of non-disseminated and disseminated LD. LD surveillance data from the integrated Public Health Information System (iPHIS) from 2005-2014 were mapped to symptoms according to syndrome groups (erythema migrans (EM), flu-like, cardiac, neurologic or arthritic) and disease stages (early localized, early disseminated or late disseminated). During the study period, 1,230 cases due to Borrelia burgdoferi were repor

Comparison of PCR and Viable Count as a Method for Enumeration of Bacteria in an A/J Mouse Aerosol Model of Q Fever.

Historically, disease progression in animal models of Q fever has been carried out using PCR to monitor the presence of Coxiella burnetii DNA in the host. However, the colonization and dissemination of other bacterial infections in animal models are tracked using viable counts, enabling an accurate assessment of viable bacterial load within tissues. Following recent advances in the culture methods, it has become possible to do the same with C. burnetii. Here we compare and contrast the different information gained by using PCR or viable counts to study this disease. Viable bacteria were cleare

Research on patient safety: falls and medications.

Below you will find summaries of published research describing investigations into patient safety issues related to falls and medications. The first summary provides details on the incidence of falls associated with the use of walkers and canes. This is followed by a summary of a fall-prevention intervention study that evaluated the effectiveness of widespread dissemination of evidence-based strategies in a community in Connecticut. The third write up provides information on three classes of medications that are associated with a significant number of emergency room visits. The last summary de

Importance of radon as a threat to public health.

Since the discovery of x rays, the public has shown increasing concern about exposure to radiation. In the mid-1980s, with the dissemination of information about the ubiquitous nature of radon, this concern about radiation exposure has taken on a new perspective. As the general public realizes that exposure to radiation is an unavoidable part of life, questions arise as to how much exposure is acceptable when weighed against the costs of reducing the exposure. Because limited resources are available to protect the public's health and the environment, these resources need to be used wisely. The

Design of the FP-RESTORE study: a protocol for prospective, observational study of real-world treatments with endovascular therapy in patients with femoropopliteal artery Tosaka III in-stent restenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Femoropopliteal artery in-stent restenosis (FP-ISR) represents one of the main obstacles for stent implantation in peripheral artery disease patients, especially Tosaka III FP-ISR, which is also referred to as in-stent occlusion. Diverse endovascular treatments of Tosaka III FP-ISR are available, and the results are unequivocal. However, real-world data are limited. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy, safety and health economics evaluation of various endovascular procedures in the treatment of Tosaka III FP-ISR. METHOD AND ANALYSIS: This study is a prospective, multicentre

Rural youths' understanding of gene x environmental contributors to heritable health conditions: The case of podoconiosis in Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVES: Assess the feasibility of engaging youth to disseminate accurate information about gene by environmental (GxE) influences on podoconiosis, a neglected tropical lymphedema endemic in southern Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross sectional survey was conducted with 377 youth randomly selected from 2 districts of Southern Ethiopia. Measures included GxE knowledge (4 true/false statements), preventive action knowledge (endorse wearing shoes and foot hygiene), causal misconceptions (11 items related to contagion) and confidence to explain GxE (9 disagree/agree statements). RESULTS: Over half (5

Awareness of cord blood collection and the impact on banking.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is an important source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation especially in minority populations with limited chances of finding a histocompatible volunteer donor in the registry. UCB has the advantages of early availability, successful outcomes despite some histocompatibility mismatch, and low incidence of chronic graft-versus-host disease. Public cord blood banks that disseminate UCB products for transplant depend on voluntary donation at participating hospitals and obstetrical providers for collection. PROCEDURE: Using survey questionnaires,

Brainstem oligodendroglial tumors in children: two case reports and review of literatures.

PURPOSE: There is little information on pediatric oligodendroglial tumor located in the brainstem because of its rarity. METHODS: Here, we present two pediatric cases of pontine oligodendroglial tumors with radiological findings atypical for diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma. RESULTS: The first patient was an 8-year-old boy. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated diffuse high-intensity changes in the pons, left middle cerebellar peduncle, and part of the left cerebellar hemisphere on T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images, with an enhanced spot lesion in the l

Public and patient research priorities for orthostatic hypotension.

With a rapidly expanding older population and increased survival of older people with chronic disease, we can expect to see increasing numbers of people with orthostatic hypotension (OH). Unfortunately the evidence base for people with OH, with particular relevance to older people, has not kept up and has resulted in a real lack of progress and little good evidence. There are several areas of research that could potentially benefit patients but establishing which ones are priority areas requires public and patient involvement (PPI). This process includes people/patients in the research team to

Rift Valley fever knowledge, mitigation strategies and communication preferences among male and female livestock farmers in Eastern Province, Rwanda.

The Government of Rwanda reported an outbreak of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in the Eastern Province in 2018. To respond to the outbreak, vaccination and education campaigns about the disease were carried out. Because RVF cases continue to be detected in Rwanda and the disease impacts livelihoods and health, accurate knowledge and communication are imperative. The objectives of this study were to evaluate knowledge and risk perceptions of RVF transmission among livestock farmers in Nyagatare District, Eastern Province, Rwanda, and to compare RVF knowledge, risk perceptions, and farming practices b

[COV IMPACT: Stress exposure analysis among hospital staff in 2 hospitals in France during the COVID-19 pandemic].

The COVID-19 pandemic has swept through our hospitals which have had to adapt as a matter of urgency. We are aware that a health crisis of this magnitude is likely to generate mental disorders particularly affecting exposed healthcare workers. Being so brutal and global, this one-of the kind pandemic has been impacting the staff in their professional sphere but also within their private circle. The COV IMPACT study is an early assessment survey conducted for 2 weeks in May 2020, of the perception by all hospital workers of the changes induced in their professional activity by the pandemic. Using lessons from breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening to inform the development of lung cancer screening programs.

Multiple advisory groups now recommend that high-risk smokers be screened for lung cancer by low-dose computed tomography. Given that the development of lung cancer screening programs will face many of the same issues that have challenged other cancer screening programs, the National Cancer Institute-funded Population-based Research Optimizing Screening through Personalized Regimens (PROSPR) consortium was used to identify lessons learned from the implementation of breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening that should inform the introduction of lung cancer screening. These lessons incl

[Inequalities in cervical screening practices].

Theoretically, the cytology-based cervical screening is capable of early detection of precancerous epithelial lesions of cervix uteri and its cancer, and of early referral to treatment. In this way, screening can inmprove the quality of life of the patients and reduce mortality from the target disease. Unfortunately, this often remains unexploited, because there might be inequalities on both "supply" and "demand" side of screening. In addition to the geopolitical situation of a country, inequalities might result from differences in the health care systems, and heavy access to the screening ser
