The kinetics of trichloroethylene were examined in three men, 28-36 years old, hospitalized after an acute occupational exposure. The trichloroethylene concentration of venous blood was determined by gas chromatography with headspace analysis; urinary trichloroacetic acid was assayed by the colorimetric method of Fujiwara. The kinetics of blood trichlorethylene (t1/2 21.7 h) and the urinary elimination of trichloracetic acid over six days were used to calculate the total inhalation exposures. Blood trichlorethylene was diagnostically more relevant than urinary trichloracetic acid.

We report the use of inhaled natural interleukin-2 in patients with metastatic disease. Six patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma received 100,000 units natural interleukin-2, 5 times per day by inhalation in addition to a 4-day cycle of intravenous natural interleukin-2 every 2 weeks and subcutaneous interferon 5 days per week. Inhalation and nasal aspirin challenge has been investigated in asthma patients with co-existing rhinitis. Eight of 39 asthma patients were diagnosed as aspirin-sensitive on the basis of inhalation challenge. Seven aspirin-sensitive asthmatics were subjected to nasal aspirin provocation. The previously published literature contains at least 27 deaths associated with the intentional concentration and inhalation of typewriter correction fluid (TCF). The solvent systems of TCF products include volatile halogenated hydrocarbons such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane and trichloroethylene. To determine bronchial reactivity patterns in adults, 211 subjects, 22 to 86 years of age, underwent a methacholine challenge in a Natural History of Asthma study. The diagnosis of asthma or nonasthmatic allergic diseases was based on a standardized respiratory questionnaire. Subjects were nonsmokers and had not had an infection for 1 month. Intradermal skin tests were done to a battery of common antigens. Tracheal penetration of water soluble contrast media (gastrografin) for X-ray control, after gastro-oesophageal anastomosis, resulted in acute pulmonary oedema in two patients. In this type of surgery, mediastinal dissection was responsible for recurrent nerve injury. Inhalation was due to this recurrent nerve palsy. Suspicion of a persisting communication between the bronchial tree and the pleural space in a patient with surgically drained pneumothorax was confirmed by the inhalation of Kr-81m gas. Compared to other diagnostic methods, this technique is harmless and repeatable, and hence very convenient for the assessment and follow-up of persisting pneumothorax due to air-leaks and of bronchopleural fistulas of any cause.
