Remote sessions and frequency analysis for improved insight into cerebral function during pediatric and neonatal intensive care.

A project involving recording and analysing EEG together with cardiovascular signals and temperature has been initiated. The aim of this project is to establish difficulties and possibilities involved with implementing a system for remote sessions and analysing EEG in correlation with other physiological signals. One objective is to find indicators of cerebral function during postasphyxia neonatal intensive care and pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass surgery with hypothermia. Remote sessions for joint interpretation have been carried out between pediatricians and clinical neurophysiologists, and

Breastmilk feeding status and weight gain of low birth weight infants in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

A prospective observational study of feeding in low birth weight (LBW) infants with birth weight (BW) of at least 1.8 kg admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) showed that nearly 80% of mothers provided expressed breastmilk (EBM) and a further 14% breastfed their infants before discharge. Weight gain was overall poor at a mean of 9.48 +/- 7.82 grams per kg per day with those on predominant EBM feeding (EBM > 70%) doing worse than those on predominant preterm formula (PTF) feeding (EBM < 31%), weight gain being 5.40 +/- 6.88 and 11.10 +/- 8.15 grams per kg per day respectively (p <

Clinical practice guidelines for neonatal therapeutic hypothermia across European Society for Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC) member countries: a multidisciplinary blind comparison.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) decreases mortality and neuro-developmental disability in neonates greater or equal than 36 weeks' gestation with moderate-to-severe hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) due to perinatal asphyxia. TH is often applied in different ways, as national guidelines and target populations may significantly differ. We aimed to compare TH guidelines from various European countries as we hypothesised that guidelines are significantly different and often of insufficient quality. METHODS: Multidisciplinary, blind, critical appraisal of clinical practice guideline

Neonatal sepsis-causing bacterial pathogens and outcome of trends of their antimicrobial susceptibility a 20-year period at a neonatal intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Due to increases in the number of infants born with younger gestational age (GA) and lower birth weight, the incidence of neonatal sepsis is increasing. PURPOSE: We investigated the changes in the prevalence of bacterial pathogens, their antimicrobial susceptibility, and sepsis-related mortality during 20 years at a neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS: The study period was divided into two 10-year phases (1998-2007 vs. 2008-2017). Medical records were reviewed to gather data on demographics, causative microbial pathogens, incidence of multidrug-resistant organisms, antimicrobia

Current skin care practices in very low birth weight infants in German Neonatal Intensive Care Units - results from a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The skin is the largest epithelial organ and a critical barrier. However, in preterm infants, particularly very low birth weight infants (VLBWI, < 1500 g), it is immature and highly susceptible to injury and infection. Despite growing awareness of neonatal skin care, evidence-based guidelines for this vulnerable population are lacking. This study aimed to provide an overview of current skin care practices in German Neonatal Intensive Care units (NICUs) and compare them with other European centers. METHODS: A cross-sectional, web-based survey was distributed to German level III NIC

Mapping the effects of nurses' developmental care education on infants and families in a surgical neonatal intensive care unit: An observational study.

Developmental care (DC) mitigates the impact of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stressors on infants and their families. However, the effect of variable exposure to DC-educated nurses on infant and parent outcomes remains unclear. Social network analysis (SNA), which maps relationships and interaction patterns, was used to evaluate the influence of nurse DC education in a surgical NICU (sNICU). In this prospective observational study, 45 infants >34 weeks' gestation, their parents, and sNICU nurses participated. We examined associations between nurse DC education levels and infants' behavi

Clinical utility of renal and urinary tract point-of-care ultrasound in the neonatal intensive care unit: insights from a case series.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision-making in acutely ill neonates often depends on the timely identification of the underlying pathology. Bedside point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), performed by the treating clinician, allows immediate correlation of imaging findings with evolving clinical status. However, its role in evaluating renal and urinary tract abnormalities in neonates remains relatively underexplored and is not yet widely integrated into routine practice. METHODS: This multicenter case series included data from four tertiary neonatal intensive care units in India between January 2023 and M
