METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with newly diagnosed Grade 3 or 4 astrocytoma, oligoastrocytoma, or gliosarcoma were enrolled after surgery. In the present study we evaluated the response rate and the immunorestorative properties of interferon alpha 2b (IFn alpha 2b) administered to patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), melanoma (MEL) or colorectal cancer (CC). We have examined the effect of interferon (IFN)-gamma and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha on the development of the disease. We report that there is an unexpectedly high incidence of second neoplasms in patients after treatment of hairy cell leukemia (HCL) with interferon alpha 2b (IFN). In a cohort of 69 patients with HCL entered in a protocol using IFN as the primary treatment, and followed thereafter for a median of 91 months (range, 0.2 to 109 months), 13 patients (19%) developed a second neoplasm. BACKGROUND: Interleukin (IL) 33, a novel member of the IL-1 family, is produced mainly by epithelial cells and endothelial cells in response to various types of stress, including necrosis. The effects of IL-33 on the immune cells involved in allergic contact dermatitis have recently been revealed in vitro. However, in vivo, the induction mechanism and function of IL-33 are not fully understood.
