Anemia is prevalent among pregnant adolescents, but few data exist on biochemical indicators of iron status in this group. We hypothesized that among an at-risk population of African-American, pregnant adolescents, the degree of iron depletion and deficiency would be marked, and that iron deficiency anemia would comprise the majority of the observed anemia. To examine this, blood samples were collected from 80 girls (< or =18 y old) attending an inner city maternity clinic, 23 of whom were studied longitudinally in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters depending on contact at the clinic. Sample sizes for

BACKGROUND/AIM: Management of renal anemia in end-stage renal disease requires careful evaluation of the iron status before and in particular during erythropoietin treatment. However, there is no simple and practical iron index accurately predictive of functional iron deficiency in these patients till now. The purpose of this prospective study, therefore, is to evaluate whether a short course of low-dose intravenous iron challenge can detect functional iron deficiency in hemodialysis patients.
METHODS: Twenty-four patients with baseline serum ferritin levels between 100 and 500 ng/ml were tre

The effects of iron deficiency on the absorption of different dietary sources of iron were studied, together with the interactions between iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and zinc in the jejunum-ileum of control and iron-deficient rats. In this study, three perfusion solutions containing different iron sources: ferric citrate, haemoglobin, and equal parts of ferric citrate and haemoglobin were used. In addition, the same perfusion solutions were used with and without 2,4-dinitrophenol, an inhibitor of oxidative phosphorylation. Iron absorption in anaemic rats was greater than in t

Coffee is one of the first liquids given to infants in Guatemala. To evaluate whether this practice has an adverse effect on iron status, 160 children 12-24 mo of age who had received coffee for > or = 2 mo and had at least one indicator of iron deficiency were stratified by initial hemoglobin concentration (anemic, or nonanemic, ie, hemoglobin > or = 105 g/L) and randomly assigned to a control (continuation of coffee; coffee) or intervention (provided with a substitute consisting of sugar and coloring; substitute) group for 5 mo. Anemic children were provided with iron supplements for 2-3 mo.

Two patients with long-standing nephrotic syndrome are described in whom urinary iron losses may have contributed towards an iron deficiency state. Seven other nephrotic patients were also studied. Increased urinary iron excretion was found in six out of nine patients and increased urinary copper excretion in all eight patients in whom it was measured. Trace metal losses in the urine in nephrotics may be important clinically.

Iron deficiency anaemia secondary to menorrhagia was observed in a woman of Greek Cypriot origin. Moderate thrombocytopenia was also present. Treatment with parenteral and oral iron produced a transient thrombocytosis, the platelet count then returning to normal. Subsequent analysis revealed that she also carried the alpha1-thalassaemia trait. Previous reports of thrombocytopenia responsive to iron treatment are reviewed.

Iron deficiency has been reported in up to 50% of patients with heart failure (HF), irrespective of the presence of anemia. Although no formally validated definition for iron deficiency in patients with HF exists, both the American and European Heart Failure Guidelines define iron deficiency as a serum ferritin of < 100 ng/ml, or a ferritin of 100-299 ng/ml, provided that the transferrin saturation (TSAT) is less than 20%. The presence of iron deficiency has been associated with poor patient-oriented outcomes, prompting the assessment of intravenous (IV) iron as a treatment for iron deficiency

Background/Objectives: There are conflicting results on the effects of ferric derisomaltose (FDM) vs. iron sucrose (IS) for treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). We systematically assessed the efficacy and safety of these treatments. Methods: We searched Ovid MEDLINE, Web of Science, Pubmed, and Cochrane Central for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy and/or safety of FDM vs. IS in patients with IDA. The primary efficacy outcome was the change in hemoglobin (Hb) levels at week 4, and the safety outcome was serious or severe hypersensitivity reactions, as defined by

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient deficiency worldwide, negatively affecting quality of life and health. Young women are at particularly high risk due to increased iron demands during growth, menstrual blood losses, and dietary habits. There are no official guidelines recommending screening for iron deficiency in healthy young women. This study aimed to develop a screening instrument (IRON-5) to predict iron deficiency in this group, with relevance for use in primary care and school health services.
METHODS: In 2023, a cross-sectional study was conducted to assess t

Maternal iron deficiency during gestation may have long-lasting effects on offspring neurodevelopment; however, the relationships between behavioral alterations, iron homeostasis, and neurobiological outcomes remain incompletely understood. This study investigated neurobehavioral and neurobiological alterations in offspring rats exposed to maternal gestational iron deficiency despite postnatal nutritional recovery. Female Wistar Kyoto rats were administered either a control or iron-deficient diet throughout gestation, whereas spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) served as a phenotypic referen

Iron deficiency is a distinct comorbidity in patients with heart failure (HF), independent of anemia, and is associated with reduced functional capacity and increased hospitalization and mortality. Randomized trials of intravenous (IV) iron repletion have yielded directionally consistent but incompletely aligned results, prompting numerous systematic reviews and meta-analyses that largely draw on the same underlying trials. We performed an umbrella review to consolidate this evidence base and clarify the strength and consistency of treatment effects across outcomes. Across the pooled reviews,

In the dynamic environment of plants, the interplay between light-dependent growth and iron nutrition is a recurring challenge. Plants respond to low iron levels by adjusting growth and physiology through enhanced iron acquisition from the rhizosphere and internal iron pool reallocation. Iron deficiency response assays and gene co-expression networks aid in documenting physiological reactions and unraveling gene-regulatory cascades, offering insight into the interplay between hormonal and external signaling pathways. However, research directly exploring the significance of light in iron nutrit

Iron (Fe) is essential for normal plant growth and development. In rice, Fe deficiency leads to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and ultimately, yield loss. Most studies have focused on investigating the mechanisms of Fe deficiency responses in rice roots; however, the effects of shoot Fe redistribution on Fe deficiency response remain poorly understood. Phloem transport plays a vital role in distributing Fe to new tissues. To investigate the effects of enhanced phloem-mediated Fe transport on rice adaptability to iron deficiency, we subjected transgenic lines w

Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is a prevalent global health concern, with nonheme iron salts being the most commonly used iron supplementation therapies. However, these therapies are associated with significant side effects and poor efficacy due to interactions with dietary components. Heme iron, which is less susceptible to such interactions, holds promise as an alternative, but suffers from high individual variability in clinical efficacy. This study systematically investigates the biopharmaceutical properties of hemin and identifies its poor solubility and permeability, classifying it as a Cl

Traditional iron supplements for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) have several limitations, including suboptimal absorption, gastrointestinal discomfort, and concerns regarding long-term safety. In this study, we synthesized monodisperse 6-line ferrihydrite as an innovative iron supplement, featuring a structure analogous to the natural "iron core" present in ferritin. Notably, 6-line ferrihydrite (6-Fh) was internalized by Caco-2 cells via a process independent of divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1). Additionally, its stability as nanoparticles within the gastrointestinal tract prevents the irrit

Hepcidin is the key hyposideremic hormone produced primarily by the liver. However, recent reports reveal extrahepatic functional sources of hepcidin, including the intestine, the site of dietary iron absorption. To determine whether intestinal hepcidin may play a role in plasma iron lowering, we generated transgenic mice overexpressing the peptide specifically in this tissue. At 1 month of age, transgenic mice exhibited severe iron deficiency along with decreased hematologic indices and a drastic suppression of liver hepcidin in response to hyposideremia. Mechanistically, we showed that intes
