Immunohistochemical expression of Ki67, CD10, BRAF, and α-SMA tumour markers in ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst.

Certain tumour markers may play a role in the pathogenesis of ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), and may aid the initial diagnostic assessment in selected cases, or possibly serve as prognostic indicators. An immunohistochemical (IHC) study was undertaken to observe the staining patterns of Ki67, CD10, BRAF, and α-SMA tumour biomarkers in relation to ameloblastoma and OKC. Patients treated for ameloblastoma or OKC at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2020, inclusive, were included. Selected paraffin tissue blocks were retrieved, and s

An unusual case of multilocular Stafne bone cavity.

Stafne bone defects (SBDs) are asymptomatic lingual bone depressions of the lower jaw that are frequently caused by soft-tissue inclusion. The common variant of SBD exists at the third molar region of the mandible below the inferior dental canal is an and ovoid-shaped homogeneous well-defined radiolucency. In this report, an unusual occurrence of SBD with multilocular appearance is presented. Asymptomatic lingual bone defects may represent various radiographic features. Detailed radiographic evaluation with CT scans should be performed to differentiate SBDs from other pathologies.

MR imaging of epithelial cysts of the oral and maxillofacial region.

The aim of the present study was to review the magnetic resonance (MR) appearance of primary epithelial cysts in order to distinguish the cysts from other possible lesions. MR images were obtained in 27 cases of epithelial cysts, including 7 odontogenic keratocysts, 3 dentigerous cysts, 1 glandular odontogenic cyst, 10 radicular cysts, 4 nasopalatine duct cysts, and 2 nasolabial cysts. In addition, contrast enhanced MR imagings were performed in 12 cases, including 3 odontogenic keratocysts, 1 dentigerous cyst, 1 glandular odontogenic cyst, and 7 radicular cysts. We obtained the following resu

[Computerized tomography of the alveolar process].

In addition to the conventional radiological methods used in odontology, computed tomography (CT) provides superposition-free images of the mandible and maxilla. Its value has been proved not only in cases of malignancy but also in many other problems. If an examination is performed with a slice thickness of less than 1.5 mm, the form and position of retained teeth in the alveolar bone, as well as subsequent lesions of neighboring permanent teeth, can be visualized so that early treatment can be planned. If the parodontal space of a retained tooth is visible, orthodontic intervention is possib

[Is resection still a timely procedure in the treatment of keratocysts?].

Between 1977 and 1987 a total of 31 patients with keratocysts were treated at the maxillofacial surgery department of the University of Cologne. In two patient groups with 11 major mandibular cysts each, two different approaches were used: mandibular resection in one, and enucleation following previous fixation of the cyst epithelium with Carnoy's solution in the other group. The fact that only one recurrence was observed in the second group, gives us reason to recommend this safe and, for the patient, unstressful procedure.

[Clinical characteristics and genetic identity of the basal cell nevus syndrome (Gorlin-Goltz syndrome)].

The clinical, genetic, radiological, dental and dermatological aspects of 3 patients with the autosomal dominant basal cell naevus syndrome are reported. An analysis of the phenotypic features of 72 cases described in the literature is presented and compared with a previous analysis. Ash leaf hypopigmentation similar to that found in tuberous sclerosis represents a unique finding in this syndrome. Other similarities to the phacomatoses are discussed. We were able to support a previous report that patients with the basal cell naevus syndrome have a normal end-organ response to parathormone stim

Insights into Hyperparathyroidism-Jaw Tumour Syndrome: From Endocrine Acumen to the Spectrum of CDC73 Gene and Parafibromin-Deficient Tumours.

A total of 1 out of 10 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) presents an underlying genetic form, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia types 1, 2A, etc., as well as hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumour syndrome (HJT). We aimed to summarise the recent data, thus raising more awareness regarding HJT, from the clinical perspective of PHP in association with the challenges and pitfalls of CDC73 genetic testing and parafibromin staining. This narrative review included a sample-focused analysis from the past decade according to a PubMed search. We identified 17 original human studies (≥4 patient

Three-Dimensional Radiographic and Morphological Features of Ameloblastoma and Odontogenic Keratocyst: A Comparative Cone Beam Computed Tomography Study Using Automatic Segmentation.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare the three-dimensional (3D) radiographic and morphological features, and explore their associations in ameloblastoma (AM) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) on CBCT scans, to facilitate clinicians in the preoperative differential diagnosis between the two lesions. METHODS: CBCT scans of 151 AMs and 164 OKCs were retrospectively collected. The morphological features (volume, length, width, height) of lesions were obtained by OCL-Net automatically, an algorithm established for odontogenic cystic lesion (OCL) segmentation. Meanwhile, the radiographic features of lesi

Microvascular reconstruction of the mouth, face and jaws. Oromandibular reconstruction - free fibula flap.

Dental surgeons may encounter in their clinical practice patients who present with aggressive pathologies that require early diagnosis and prompt treatment. This action may limit the extent of tissue damage and, where relevant, improve survival outcome. Clinicians should therefore be aware of the range of resective, reconstructive and rehabilitative options that are available in the management of these patients. We present our experience with the free fibula flap used for oromandibular reconstruction; this was undertaken in 21 patients following resective surgery for malignant pathology, cytol

Stafne bone cavity in the anterior mandible.

Lingual mandibular bone defect, also known as Stafne bone cavity, is mostly seen in the posterior portion of the mandible. Inclusions in the anterior portion are very unusual, with around 50 cases reported in the English-language literature. They are often asymptomatic conditions diagnosed during a routine radiographic examination. This article describes a case of anterior Stafne bone cavity in a 52-year-old man mistaken for periapical pathologic defect and referred for treatment. In addition to clinical examination, the patient was imaged using conventional periapical, panoramic radiography,

CT analysis of the Stafne's bone defects of the mandible.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the aetiology of Stafne's bone defects by analysing the CT findings of two types of defects, which appeared differently on panoramic radiographs. METHODS: 32 lesions with suspicion of the Stafne's bone defect on a panoramic radiograph were categorised into two groups: typical "Stafne type", which showed the connection to the base of the mandible, and non-typical "Cyst type", which showed no connection. Age, sex, the existence of hypertension and the following CT findings: location, size and inner content of the defect, existence of expansion of the buccal cortical bo

Follow-up study of apicoectomized molars.

The present material consists of 46 respected molars, 20 of which were located in the maxilla and 26 in the mandible. Altogether, 93 different roots were resected and 109 root fillings made. The follow-up study was made 1-6 years after the apicoectomy. The patients were examined clinically, special attention being paid to the subjective and objective symptoms shown by each apicoetomized tooth. Then a stereoscopic picture of the resected tooth and an orthopantomogram were taken. Of these 46 apicoectomized teeth, 33 (71%) showed complete healing, five (11%) were uncertain, four (9%) showed unsat

Imaging characteristics of a Stafne bone cavity--panoramic radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

INTRODUCTION: A rare case of Stafne bone cavity (SBC) with salivary gland herniation confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is described. RESULTS: It was diagnosed in a 72-year-old male patient. Surgical intervention was avoided. The report highlights imaging findings of panoramic radiography, computed tomography, and especially magnetic resonance tomography. CONCLUSION: It is demonstrated that employment of MRI for further evaluation of suspicion of SBC on panoramic radiographs can be a helpful diagnostic tool.

Enlargement of a Stafne cyst as an indication for surgical treatment - a case report.

Stafne cysts are often defined as static lesions located in the angle of the mandible. Consequently many authors have proposed that there is no need for surgical treatment of these bony defects on the lingual side of the mandible. This article describes the case of a 55-year-old patient, in whom a Stafne cyst showed a significant enlargement, reaching a size that necessitated surgical intervention because of the risk of pathological fracture. A literature search showed 5 additional similar cases, where progression in the size of a Stafne cyst could be radiographically documented. Consequently,
