BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to assess the biological risks of medical laboratory employees with particular focus on laboratory acquired infection (LAI), activities having the greatest risk, accidents with biological material, post exposure procedure, preventive measures and workers' knowledge about biological exposure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 9 laboratories. A questionnaire survey was attended by 123 employees and 9 heads of these units with the use of two questionnaires for laboratory workers and the managers.
RESULTS: 32.5% of the respondents (40 persons) had an

BACKGROUND: Results of some laboratory tests for Emergency Department (ED) patients return hours to days after the patient is discharged. Inadequate follow-up for these late-arriving results poses medical and legal risks. We have developed, but not yet implemented, a computerized system called the Automated Late-Arriving Results Monitoring System (ALARMS). ALARMS scans the hospital's laboratory and ED registration databases to generate an electronic daily log of all late-arriving abnormal laboratory results for ED patients.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential impact of ALARMS by assessing o

Four species of human bocavirus (HBoV) have been recently discovered and classified in the Bocavirus genus (family Parvoviridae, subfamily Parvovirinae). Although detected both in respiratory and stool samples worldwide, HBoV1 is predominantly a respiratory pathogen, whereas HBoV2, HBoV3, and HBoV4 have been found mainly in stool. A variety of signs and symptoms have been described in patients with HBoV infection including rhinitis, pharyngitis, cough, dyspnea, wheezing, pneumonia, acute otitis media, fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Many of these potential manifestations have not been s

Viral meningitis, hantavirus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus infections are used as examples to demonstrate that important shortcomings and limitations exist in Chile to study the epidemiology of infectious diseases with modern methods. The lack of a national network of well-connected local and national microbiology laboratories is one of these important shortcomings. The author summarizes the evolution of the systems and institutions that deal with the infectious diseases in the world and in Chile.

Laboratory information management systems (LIMSs) are an important tool for public health laboratory operations and serve the data needs of public health programs. A comprehensive and interoperable LIMS allows laboratory staff to ensure quality management of laboratory operations. It also provides timely client care through direct access to diagnostic data and tracks important public health trends. Here, we describe the implementation and adaptation of HIV-related LIMSs in 3 countries supported by PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief)-namely, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe-to suppo

Before the 2010 devastating earthquake and cholera outbreak, Haiti's public health laboratory systems were weak and services were limited. There was no national laboratory strategic plan and only minimal coordination across the laboratory network. Laboratory capacity was further weakened by the destruction of over 25 laboratories and testing sites at the departmental and peripheral levels and the loss of life among the laboratory health-care workers. However, since 2010, tremendous progress has been made in building stronger laboratory infrastructure and training a qualified public health labo

BACKGROUND: Clinical microbiology may direct decisions regarding hospitalization, isolation and anti-infective therapy, but it is not effective at the time of early care. Point-of-care (POC) tests have been developed for this purpose.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: One pilot POC-lab was located close to the core laboratory and emergency ward to test the proof of concept. A second POC-lab was located inside the emergency ward of a distant hospital without a microbiology laboratory. Twenty-three molecular and immuno-detection tests, which were technically undemanding, were progressively implemented, wit

Liquid wastes from clinical biology automated systems are currently evacuated in the urban network after chemical treatment to eliminate a possible risk of infection. Since these wastes are ecotoxic because of the presence of numerous chemical reagents, we studied their intrinsic microbicidal power towards a selection of infectious agents widely found in clinical specimens. The objective was to determine if an additional anti-infectious treatment before elimination is necessary. Thus, we evaluated the bactericidal effect of liquid wastes of several automated systems towards four bacterial spec

BACKGROUND: Both the global incidence and the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to increase, affecting hundreds of millions of individuals, particularly in low-to middle-income countries. Although a definitive diagnosis is desirable to inform STI treatment, syndromic management is the most widely used strategy in resource-limited settings. With the development of point-of-care (POC) tests, it is important to discuss how laboratories will need to adapt to new training and supervisory roles in support of testing, which will largely be performed by peripheral clinical

CONTEXT: Laboratory diagnosis of group A streptococcal pharyngitis in physician office and small-hospital laboratories.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize laboratory practices for the diagnosis of group A streptococcal pharyngitis and to identify opportunities for improvement.
DESIGN: Voluntary self-assessment questionnaire, used to assess the laboratory practices of 790 laboratories subscribing to the College of American Pathologists Excel Microbiology Proficiency Testing Program.
RESULTS: We observed discrepancies between self-reported and recommended specimen collection and laboratory testing pr

The authors report the 3rd case of cutaneous leishmaniasis due to accidental contamination of a student of biological sciences during laboratory research. The inoculation occurred when amastigotes of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis from infected hamsters were injected in healthy animals. At this stage, the student had her glove bitten by a healthy hamster and the infection was probably conveyed by the direct contact of the inoculum with the skin.
