Serum creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes were studied in 73 patients with alcoholism, including two patients with clinical alcoholic cardiomyopathy and 28 patients with haemodynamic evidence (systolic time interval abnormality) of disordered myocardial function. No isoenzyme abnormalities suggestive of myocardial injury were observed. We conclude that isoenzyme examination is unsuitable for the early detection of myocardial damage from alcohol.

Postpartum hypopituitarism or Sheehan's syndrome is frequent in Sahelian Africa. From February 1983 to July 1988, the authors observed 40 cases at National hospital of Niamey (Republic of Niger). These patients were Black African women living in rural areas, without medical assistance during the last delivery. Two signs were required for the diagnosis: absence of postpartum lactation and prolonged amenorrhoea. A 15 points score was used for identification of each case. Postpartum hypopituitarism is a severe disease in Sahelian Africa: after the pituitary necrosis, 80% children died. 60% of pat

Postpartum dysgalactia is a common clinical problem for lactating women. Seeking out the safe and efficient phytoestrogens will be a promising strategy for postpartum dysgalactia therapy. In this study, the postpartum mice within four groups, including control group, the model group, and the treatment groups intragastrically administrated with normal saline, bromocriptine, bromocriptine plus 17α-ethinyl estradiol, and bromocriptine plus quercetin, respectively, were used. The results showed that quercetin, a kind of natural phytoestrogen, could efficiently promote lactation yield and mammary g

Hypogalactia has a relative high frequency in women having delivered preterm infants, who often have difficulties in maintaining a sufficient production of milk for their infants' needs over prolonged periods of time. Recent studies have shown a potential galactogogue effect of silymarin on milk production in animal models (cows and rats) and in humans (mothers of term newborns); nonetheless, none of the studies conducted on humans consisted of double-blind randomized clinical trials and no data are available concerning mothers who delivered preterm infants. The aim of our study was to assess

Inflammation of the breast (mastitis) with or without infection or redness has a variety of etiologies and presentations that range from the fairly benign blocked duct to the more serious breast abscess. True infectious mastitis can present in a manner that is easily identifiable, or it can present in a subtle and ambiguous fashion. Some women are challenged with recurrent mastitis, and often the underlying etiology is never discovered. This review will assist the clinician in recognizing, efficiently diagnosing, and effectively treating breast inflammation caused by infectious and noninfectio

The objectives of this study were to investigate the determinants of the anion gap (AG) in cattle and to evaluate the utility of AG in detecting hyperlactatemia in sick neonatal calves and adult cattle. The AG was calculated as AG = ([Na+] + [K+])-([Cl-] + [HCO-3]), with all values in mEq/L. The AG of healthy neonatal calves (n = 16) was 29.6 +/- 6.2 mEq/L (mean +/- SD), and the blood L-lactate concentration ranged from 0.5 to 1.2 mM/L. The AG was significantly (P < .05) correlated with serum phosphate (r = .66) and creatinine (r = .51) concentrations. The AG of neonatal calves with experiment

The neurobiology of social phobia has been examined using four research strategies employed to investigate the neurobiology of patients with other anxiety or mood disorders--chemical challenge paradigms, psychoneuroendocrine assessments, naturalistic challenges, and neuropharmacologic challenges. This article reviews the studies that used each of the research paradigms in patients with social phobia. The author describes these results in the context of the results of other anxiety disorder studies using these four strategies and discusses implications for future research.

Li2CO3 alone was administered to a 21-year-old female, who was in a manic state. As a consequence, lactation occurred on about the 50th day after Li2CO3 administration started, and the volume of lactation changed in parallel with the serum Li2CO3 level. The basal plasma PRL concentration and the responses to TRH (500 micrograms) were elevated during Li2CO3 administration. However, both of them returned to within the normal range after the suspension of Li2CO3 administration. From the above-mentioned findings, it is suggested that lactation is closely related to the Li2CO3 administration.

This study evaluated the effects of postnatal overnutrition during lactation on hepatic DNA methylation patterns and their relationship with hepatic metabolic disorders. At postnatal day 3, male rats were randomly divided into normal litters (NL, 10 pups per litter) or small litters (SL, three pups per litter). Weight and insulin resistance were assessed at week 3 and week 13. Whole-genome bisulfite sequencing was used to detect alterations in hepatic DNA methylation levels, and enrichment analysis for differentially methylated genes (DMGs) was conducted. The methyl donor for DNA methylation,

Oxytocin (OXT) is a neuropeptide hormone that plays a central role in numerous physiological and socio-emotional processes. Similar to arginine vasopressin (AVP), it is synthesized in the supraoptic and paraventricular hypothalamic nuclei and released both centrally and peripherally. Peripherally, OXT regulates uterine contractions during childbirth and milk ejection during lactation, metabolism, bone health, and cardiovascular functions. Centrally, it modulates social behavior, influencing trust, empathy, stress regulation, and emotional processing. Despite its close connection to AVP, the cl

The small intestine, including the endocannabinoid system (ECS), regulates the energy homeostasis. If maternal obesity modifies the intestinal ECS of the offspring favoring metabolic disorders throughout life is unexplored. Regardless maternal insults, overaction of the ECS has been related to obesity, mainly via type 1 cannabinoid receptor (CB1) signaling, while type 2 cannabinoid receptor (CB2) signaling and the endocannabinoid-like compounds, such as oleoylethanolamide (OEA) and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), have been associated with anti-inflammatory effects. We hypothesized that maternal o

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is a vital neuroactive steroid for brain development and function. Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide health problem, particularly in children and women. Gestational or developmental vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. This study examined the effect of maternal vitamin D dietary manipulations and treadmill exercise on anxiety-and depressive-related behaviors, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and prefrontal cortex (PFC) protein levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and vitamin D receptor (

BACKGROUND: Primary mitochondrial disorders (PMDs) are a diagnostic challenge for paediatricians, and identification of reliable and easily measurable biomarkers has become a high priority. This study aimed to investigate the role of serum fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) in children with PMDs.
METHODS: We analysed serum FGF21 and GDF15 concentrations by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in children with PMDs, patients with non-mitochondrial neuromuscular disorders (NMDs), and aged-matched healthy children, and compared them with serum l

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Wilson's disease (WD), also known as hepatoleticular degeneration (HLD), is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder of copper metabolism, which causes copper to accumulate in body tissues. In this study, rats fed with copper-laden diet are used to render the clinical manifestations of WD, and their copper toxicity-induced organ lesions are studied. To investigate metabolic behaviors of 'decoppering' process, penicillamine (PA) was used for treating copper-laden rats as this chelating agent could eliminate excess copper through the urine. To date, there has been limi

McArdle disease is reported in three generations of a consanguineous Druze family. The diagnosis was established on the basis of a failure of a rise in lactate in the ischemic forearm exercise test, glycogen accumulation in muscle fibers and the lack of myophosphorylase by histochemical and biochemical studies. The inheritance pattern is compatible with an autosomal recessive mode. Examination of family members revealed a marked variability in the clinical findings and functional status. This is the first reported case of the disorder in this ethnic group.

Obesity is associated with an increased risk of neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression and cognitive decline. However, the sex-specific effects of chronic exposure to an obesogenic diet remain poorly understood. Here, female mice were fed either a high-fat diet (HFD) or a control diet starting four weeks before mating and continuing throughout gestation and lactation. Their male and female offspring remained on the same diet until young adulthood. Body weight was monitored weekly, and behavioural, neurochemical and biochemical assessments were conducted at eight weeks of age. In the

Leptin (LEP) is an adipocyte-derived cytokine that integrates nutritional status, metabolism, and reproduction in cattle, with particular relevance for modern high-producing dairy cows. In ruminants, LEP and its receptors are widely expressed in metabolic and reproductive tissues, including adipose tissue, liver, hypothalamus, pituitary, ovary, uterus, and placenta, where LEP modulates energy homeostasis, neuroendocrine function, and local tissue responses. Changes in circulating LEP concentrations during the transition period reflect changes in body fat reserve, insulin and GH-IGF-1 dynamics,
