Proposal to introduce adjustment disorder with disturbed sexual functioning into the revised classifications of DSM and ICD.

This article presents a proposal for a new diagnostic concept of adjustment disorder with disturbed sexual functioning. This concept would allow one to confer a diagnosis on sexual dysfunctions in response to an identifiable stressor within 1 or 3 months. The disturbance would have to be clinically significant as evidenced by either distress in excess of what one would expect from the exposure, or by significant impairment in social, occupational or interpersonal functioning. The disturbance would not meet the criteria for another axis I disorder and would not be merely an exacerbation of a pr

Maternal life events during pregnancy and offspring language ability in middle childhood: The Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: There is accumulating evidence for a link between maternal stress during pregnancy and later behavioural and emotional problems in children. Little research has examined other developmental outcomes. AIM: To determine the effect of maternal stress during pregnancy on offspring language ability in middle childhood. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal pregnancy cohort-study. SUBJECTS: A total of 2900 mothers were recruited prior to the 18th week of pregnancy, delivering 2868 live births. The language ability of just under half of the offspring cohort (n=1309; 45.6% of original sample) was

Earlier stress exposure and subsequent major depression in aging women.

OBJECTIVE: Despite evidence that stress exposure earlier in the life course may have long-term consequences for psychopathology, most models of vulnerability for late life depression are limited to current stressors or to retrospective reports of stress history. This study estimates the influences of earlier stressors assessed longitudinally on subsequent major depressive disorder (MDD) in women at average age 60 (range 50-75). METHOD: MDD, negative life events (NLE), and marital stress were assessed multiple times in a community-based sample of 565 women followed for three decades. Adverse e

Overlap and distinctiveness of psychological risk factors in patients with ischemic heart disease and chronic heart failure: are we there yet?

OBJECTIVE: Growing evidence supports the importance of psychological factors in the etiology and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, this research has been criticized due to overlap between psychological constructs. We examined whether psychological questionnaires frequently used in cardiovascular research assess distinct constructs in a mixed group of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and chronic heart failure (CHF) patients. METHODS: 565 patients with CHF (n=118) or IHD (n=447) completed the Type D scale (DS14), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Beck Depression Inve

Non-finite loss and emotional labour: family caregivers' experiences of living with motor neurone disease.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: This paper aims to add to nurses' knowledge concerning the losses and emotional labour family caregivers face caring for people living with neurodegenerative, life-limiting illnesses such as motor neurone disease. BACKGROUND: Motor neurone disease is a relentless, progressive illness resulting in progressive loss of voluntary muscle mass and function. Previous caregiver research presents the salient losses such as social, financial and relationship loss. However, the non-finite, unpredictable losses faced every day by caregivers and the emotional labour experienced are not

Gender differences in traumatic life events, coping strategies, perceived social support and sociodemographics among postconflict displaced persons in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Towards the end of civil war in Ethiopia leading to Eritrea's independent government in 1991, a large number of persons were displaced from their homes in Eritrea, to reside in shelters in Addis Ababa. We evaluate trauma, coping, social support and sociodemographics among them particularly in relation to gender. METHODS: From each randomly selected household in these shelters, a subject was interviewed, yielding 1200 subjects in all. RESULTS: Men, compared to women, reported significantly higher physical abuse during childhood in the family, traumatic childhood life events, exper

Characterization of impulsivity in suicide completers: clinical, behavioral and psychosocial dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a personality trait thought to be linked to suicide. Yet, not all suicides are highly impulsive. We aimed to better understand clinical, behavioral and psychosocial correlates of the association between suicide and impulsive behavior. METHODS: One hundred sixty four suicide cases with impulsivity scores based on the Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS) were investigated. To examine the most extreme phenotypes, one hundred suicide cases, representing subjects with BIS scores above the 70th percentile and below the 30th percentile, were compared on clinical, behavioral and

Challenges in the management of bipolar depression.

Bipolar depression has started to receive more attention in clinical trials only relatively recently, despite the fact that patients spend more time in the depressed phase than in the manic phase of bipolar disorder. The diagnosis and management of bipolar depression are challenging, and many patients are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to symptom similarities with unipolar depression or other illnesses and/or comorbidities. Untreated or inappropriately treated bipolar depression adds to the burden of illness and is associated with a greater risk of suicide. Treatment options include lithium,

Short scales for measuring schizotypy.

BACKGROUND: This study reports short scales for measuring several dimensions of schizotypy in the normal population based on a large twin sample. METHODS: The four short scales use items drawn from a longer instrument, the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences. Using concordance estimates from MZ and DZ pairs, the items were selected both to have a high heritability and to offer broad coverage of each trait domain. RESULTS: Preliminary descriptive statistics are reported for the short scales and suggest adequate reliability. CONCLUSIONS: New scales offer a time efficient an

Marital life course events and smoking behaviour in Sweden 1980-2000.

The protective effect of marriage on smoking has been extensively established in the literature. However, less is known about the dynamics of how smoking behaviour is connected to various marital life course events, and whether there are any gender discrepancies in this respect. In this article the connection between the marital life course and smoking is analysed from a stress-related perspective controlling for other socio-economic characteristics. We use information on 81,000 individuals from the Swedish longitudinal micro-level ULF (Survey of Living Conditions) database 1980-2000, which is

[Acute stress reactions in children and adolescents in emergency situations].

Psychological and psychiatric examination, along with medico-psychological assistance, have been conducted for 48 children and adolescents, aged 9-18 years, who have been saved during the fire. An examination was carried out on day 2-7 after the disaster. A diagnosis of acute stress reaction (ASR) was made using DSM-IV-TR criteria with definition of 4 groups of symptoms: recurrent trauma surviving, avoidant symptoms, elevated excitability and dissociated symptoms. Besides the clinical examination, the questionnaires adapted for the study and drawing techniques have been used. Symptoms of recur

Nightmares and dissociative experiences: the key role of childhood traumatic events.

In order to examine the co-occurrence of nightmares with dissociative experiences in the adolescent population and to demonstrate the impact of childhood traumatic events in this association, 292 undergraduate students were interviewed for childhood traumatic events. The Van Dream Anxiety Scale (VDAS) and Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) were also administered to the subjects. For nightmares a 7.5% prevalence of 'often' and a 58.2% prevalence of 'sometimes' was found for college students. Nightmare prevalence was higher in women than in men. The rate of childhood traumatic experiences was

Stress and the urge to drink.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding why people drink alcohol is important for the health and safety of individuals and the public. The aim of this study was to examine from a cognitive point of view the hypothesized link between drinking and stress. METHODS: 25 scenarios were constructed by combining two items, either two life-change events or a social situation and an emotional state. In the initial three experiments, 159 male and 43 female alcoholics and 157 male and 93 female nonalcoholics in France judged the degree to which these scenarios were stressful and subsequently the degree to which they st

Children's responses to family member homicide.

Homicide is a significant behavioral deviation resulting in a sudden and unexpected loss of life and can leave children in the chaotic wake. Interviews conducted with 13 children ages 9 to 11 years during the initial 1 to 3 months after a family homicide provided insight into themes of bereavement. A major finding in the study was that the witnessing or hearing the news of a family member homicide was a powerful associative factor for childhood posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and for complicated bereavement.

Family factors and life events as risk factors for behavioural and emotional problems in children.

The aim of this study was to identify groups of children at increased risk of behavioural or emotional problems on the basis of socio-demographic characteristics, family characteristics, and recent life events with a focus on unemployment and divorce or separation. We obtained data on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) from a community-based national sample of 4480 parents of school-aged children and interviewed them about their demographic and family characteristics and about the child's recent life events. Results showed that family characteristics and recent life events were more strongly

Life event timing and the emotional consequences of surgical menopause for Asian-Pacific women in Guam.

Using Behavior Risk Factor Survey data (N = 398), this study tests the age-norms hypothesis by examining the emotional consequences of the timing of surgical menopause for women in Guam's Asian-Pacific community. The results of the study are supportive of the hypothesis that off-scheduled life events result in considerable emotional trauma, and show that women in Guam who are 44 years of age or younger are significantly more likely than older women to suffer psychological distress and unhappiness when they report experiencing surgical menopause. We discuss the potential implications of these f

[Bulimia nervosa in homosexuality and HIV infection in the man. Case report].

A male with bulimia nervosa is reported whose homosexual behavior resulted in HIV infection. The goal of this case study is to shed light on the course characteristics of bulimia nervosa occurring together with HIV infection in connection with homosexuality. The patient had experienced a number of traumas including sexual abuse, which surely had an influence on his developing bulimia nervosa. His longing for slimness, shown by the excessive preoccupation and dissatisfaction with body shape and weight may be considered typical for bulimia nervosa in homosexual men. Furthermore, male subjects wi

Increased prevalence of negative life events in subtypes of major depressive disorder.

The prevalence of negative life events is known to be increased among patients with depression. Little data exist on the specific subtypes of depression that are related to negative life events. Our study aimed to address this issue. We compare 115 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) to 60 normal controls. MDD patients reported experiencing one (P = .0001) or two (P = .01) negative life events more frequently than controls. Patients reported marital, other personal problems, and medical events significantly more often than controls (P < .01). Patients did not report more positive lif

Recall for self and other in autism: children's memory for events experienced by themselves and their peers.

Research on memory processing suggests that memory for events that an individual experiences should be superior to that for similar events that someone else experiences (e.g., Baker-Ward et al., 1990). However, such predictions may not be applicable to individuals with autism. There are already suggestions that individuals with autism have specific difficulties in remembering (Boucher & Lewis, 1989). In addition, they are known to have more general difficulties involving processes related to the "self." If children with autism have difficulties in encoding information about themselves this cou
