Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis modulates early-life immune response and gut metabolism.

BACKGROUND: The maturation of the immune system is critical during early life, as it involves the differentiation, maturation, and establishment of immune tolerance of immune cells. This process is influenced not only by genetic factors but also by environmental factors, particularly the symbiotic microbiota. Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (BB-12), originally found in dairy products, is widely used in infant formula and dietary supplements. However, its role and mechanisms in immune development during early life remain unclear. METHODS: Using GF mice as the experimental model, B. anim

Upper aerodigestive tract neurofunctional mechanisms: lifelong evolution and exercise.

The transformation of the upper aerodigestive tract--oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx--serves the functions of eating, speaking, and breathing during sleeping and waking hours. These life-sustaining functions may be produced by a central neural sensorimotor system that shares certain neuroanatomic networks while maintaining separate neural functional systems and network structures. Current understanding of development, maturation, underlying neural correlates, and integrative factors are discussed in light of currently available imaging modalities and recently emerging interventions. Teamwork in Parkinson's care: Building multidisciplinary models worldwide.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex, progressive neurodegenerative disorder requiring comprehensive, long-term management. PD affects millions of people globally and presents with motor and non-motor symptoms that progressively impair function and quality of life. While pharmacological therapy remains effective, optimal care extends beyond medication management. Traditional care models for PD often rely heavily on doctors and primarily target motor symptoms and motor complications, with less attention to non-motor symptoms, many of which remain under-recognized. This imbalance contributes to

[Current issues and digital technologies in pulmonary rehabilitation].

Chronic respiratory diseases - including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung diseases, lung cancer, and post-COVID conditions - are associated with substantial morbidity and reduced quality of life. In addition to pharmacological therapy, chest physiotherapy and pulmonary rehabilitation play a crucial role in improving functional capacity and patient outcomes. This review aims to summarize contemporary approaches in pulmonary rehabilitation, with particular emphasis on the integration of digital technologies and telerehabilitation strategies. A narrative rev

Before hormones: early sex-specific mechanisms shaping nervous system development, function, and postnatal disease susceptibility.

Brain development requires precise spatiotemporal regulation of gene expression and molecular processes to establish healthy and functional neural circuits. Traditionally, sex differences in brain development have been attributed primarily to gonadal differentiation and the subsequent actions of sex hormones on developmental systems during fetal life. However, these observations alone cannot fully explain the spectrum of sex biases seen in diverse neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric, and neurological disorders. In this mini review, we discuss the current evidence supporting the early embryoni

The sex-dependent response to psychosocial stress and ischaemic heart disease.

Stress is an important risk factor for modern chronic diseases, with distinct influences in males and females. The sex specificity of the mammalian stress response contributes to the sex-dependent development and impacts of coronary artery disease (CAD). Compared to men, women appear to have greater susceptibility to chronic forms of psychosocial stress, extending beyond an increased incidence of mood disorders to include a 2- to 4-fold higher risk of stress-dependent myocardial infarction in women, and up to 10-fold higher risk of Takotsubo syndrome-a stress-dependent coronary-myocardial diso

[Paradigm Shift in the Quality of Regional Medical Care: Cooperative Treatment of Onychomycosis].

In a superaging society, the medical paradigm should include both less coverage of medical-care work flow by human resources and high-quality care for patients. Strategies such as establishing medical-care teams and community medicine systems mainly for home medical care should be implemented. However, a well-organized system for home-based medical treatment of elderly patients is not yet in place, as evidenced by the lack of care, problems with long-term polypharmacy resulting from visits to multiple healthcare providers, and declines in their physical strength. It is assumed that care might

Mucopolysaccharidosis type II: European recommendations for the diagnosis and multidisciplinary management of a rare disease.

UNLABELLED: Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) is a rare, life-limiting, X-linked recessive disease characterised by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme iduronate-2-sulfatase. Consequent accumulation of glycosaminoglycans leads to pathological changes in multiple body systems. Age at onset, signs and symptoms, and disease progression are heterogeneous, and patients may present with many different manifestations to a wide range of specialists. Expertise in diagnosing and managing MPS II varies widely between countries, and substantial delays between disease onset and diagnosis can occur. In

Developing a values-based interorganisational Care at the End-of-Life Collaborative framework for the Australian context: A mixed-methods, practice-based research protocol.

BACKGROUND: As the population ages and the demand for quality care at the end of life increases, health costs are increasing, thus creating a perfect storm of need, outstripping the supply of palliative care services. Engaging communities to support care at the end of life through the establishment of values-based interorganisational Care at the End-of-Life Collaboratives is one approach to addressing this problem. Whilst there is an abundance of literature about collaboratives, understanding of those supporting care at the end of life is lacking. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this research a

Proliferation dynamics of enterocytes: Implications for intestinal barrier function, performance, health, and welfare in broiler chickens.

Intestinal health is a central determinant of growth, performance, health and welfare in modern broiler chickens. Enterocytes, the primary functional cells of the intestinal epithelium, play a pivotal role in nutrient digestion, absorption, barrier integrity and host defense. Continuous proliferation, differentiation, migration and exfoliation of enterocytes along the crypt-villus axis maintain epithelial homeostasis and intestinal efficiency. Disruption of these tightly regulated processes can compromise barrier function, reduce nutrient utilization, impair growth performance and increase sus

Real-world durability challenges with nAMD treatments and the potential promise of gene therapy.

The introduction of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapies changed the treatment landscape for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), slowing the progression of central vision loss. However, current anti-VEGF therapies are limited by the need for frequent intravitreal injections to maintain disease control, which places a substantial burden on patients, caregivers, and healthcare systems, and contributes to poorer treatment adherence and persistence in the real-world setting. To extend the dosing interval, flexible dosing strategies were implemented; however, th
