The effects of standing, lifting and noise exposure on preterm birth, growth restriction, and perinatal death in healthy low-risk working military women.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of standing, lifting and noise in low-risk, healthy pregnant women are uncertain. In the past, the heterogeneity of the populations studied, the limitations of the designs of the retrospective and case control studies, and a failure of some of the larger investigations to evaluate all the potential confounding variables has hampered many studies. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate, throughout pregnancy, the effects of standing, repetitive lifting, and noise in the workplace compared with no standing, lifting or noise exposure, on maternal and perinatal out…

Sinus membrane perforation and oroantral communications in lateral sinus lift: a narrative review and proposal of a clinical decision tree.

INTRODUCTION: Sinus membrane perforation is the most frequent intraoperative complication of lateral window sinus floor elevation, with reported incidences ranging from 7 % to 56 %. Pre-existing oroantral communications (OACs) represent a frequently associated clinical situation encountered during implant rehabilitation of the posterior edentulous maxilla. Despite an extensive literature, no clear consensus guides the clinician in selecting a management technique. The aim of this work is to propose an educational clinical decision tree, based on a narrative review of the literature, to guide t

A Qualitative Multicenter Study of Participant Experiences With an App-Based Mindfulness Intervention (Lift 2) for Critical Illness Survivors.

IMPORTANCE: Persistent physical and mental health symptoms are common among ICU survivors and pose barriers to recovery. A randomized clinical trial of an app-based mindfulness intervention (Lift) for ICU survivors suggested improvement in mental health symptoms; however, participants' perceptions of the intervention and its influence on their recovery is unknown. OBJECTIVES: We sought to understand ICU survivors' perspectives on how the app-based mindfulness intervention influenced their recovery and identify potential mechanisms by which it influenced their physical/mental health symptoms.

Histological and Biomechanical Comparison of Different Dissection Planes in Brow Lift: An Experimental Rabbit Model and Its Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Different dissection planes used in brow lift surgery-namely, subcutaneous, subgaleal, and subperiosteal-present distinct biomechanical and histological characteristics. This study aimed to compare these three dissection approaches in terms of tissue healing and mechanical resistance. METHODS: In this experimental model using New Zealand white rabbits, three groups of eight animals each underwent subcutaneous, subgaleal, or subperiosteal dissection. After a 12-week healing period, tissue samples were harvested for either histological or biomechanical analysis. Epidermal, dermal, s

Incidence and management of bleeding and hematoma in 805 cosmetic forehead/eyebrow lift procedures: an oculofacial plastic surgeon's experience.

PURPOSE: Hematoma formation after a forehead/eyebrow lift (FEL) procedure can lead to tissue necrosis and forehead fixation failure. This study aims to report the incidence and outcome of intra- and post-operative bleeding and hematoma-related complications in patients undergoing open and endoscopic FEL procedures. A strategy for prevention of intra- and postoperative bleeding is also provided. METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of patients who had cosmetic FEL performed by the senior author (2007-2022). Patients with excessive intraoperative bleeding, early postoperative bleeding,

Is one-stage lateral sinus lift and implantation safe in severely atrophic maxillae? Results of a comparative pilot study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this retrospective comparative study was to evaluate the survival of dental implants placed in the posterior maxilla with a residual bone height less than 3 mm using a one-stage lateral sinus lifting approach. The research question was whether in very severely atrophied maxillary bones (residual height < 3 mm), a sinus lift with simultaneous implant placement would be associated with a higher complication rate compared to single-stage sinus lifts at average residual alveolar process heights. METHODS: Complications of 63 implants, where the residual bone height was below 3 …

Maxillomandibular Advancement for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Long-Term Results of Respiratory Function and Reverse Face-Lift.

PURPOSE: Scientific literature considers maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) as the most effective surgical treatment for the management of adult obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Maxillomandibular advancement enlarges the pharyngeal space by expanding the skeletal framework. Moreover, it projects the soft tissue of the cheeks, the mouth, and the nose in the aging face, which is characterized by multiple signs affecting the middle third and the lower third. The potential of orthognathic surgery (double jaw surgical advancement) of expanding the skeletal foundation to increase the facial

One key to fit all locks? Routine internal drainage to minimize seromas during thigh lift surgeries.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a worldwide epidemic. Complication rates after body contouring surgeries in massive weight loss patients were quite high, with seroma development being the second most common complication, reported rates averaging 15%-40%, Methods described to reduce the annoying high rate of seroma did not have a statistically significant difference in reducing seromas. METHODS: Our aim was to find a universal solution that could be used with any body-contouring surgery to manage seromas. We tried this novel technique initially on thigh lifts. Instead of wading in the jungle of metho

NFκB inhibition to lift the mechano-competence of mesenchymal stromal cell-derived neocartilage toward articular chondrocyte levels.

BACKGROUND: Fully functional regeneration of skeletal defects by multipotent progenitor cells requires that differentiating cells gain the specific mechano-competence needed in the target tissue. Using cartilage neogenesis as an example, we asked whether proper phenotypic differentiation of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) into chondrocytes in vitro will install the adequate biological mechano-competence of native articular chondrocytes (AC). METHODS: The mechano-competence of human MSC- and AC-derived neocartilage was compared during differentiation for up to 35 days. The neocartilage layer w
