BACKGROUND: Congenital unilateral lower lip palsy (CULLP), also referred to as congenital asymmetric crying facies (ACF), is a rare condition that causes pronounced depression of the unaffected lower lip when crying, despite symmetric appearance of the mouth and lips at rest. Unlike the acquired form of ACF, CULLP is idiopathic and often involves permanent defect.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a case-based review of CULLP, including a thorough analysis of the relevant literature and a discussion of the exemplary case of 5-year-old patient presenting with unilateral facial asymmetry resultin…

Ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum (AFA) is a rare, benign congenital anomaly. Notably, it is characterized by the adhesion of the ciliary edges of the upper and lower eyelids at the trabecular line. AFA is usually a solitary malformation of sporadic occurrence; however, it can occur in conjunction with other congenital diseases. Herein, we report a case of cleft lip with AFA. A patient was referred to the ophthalmology department of our hospital. The ophthalmic diagnosis was AFA in both the eyes. The left eye was observed to have a fibrous adhesion in the center, and she underwent surgery to e…

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a negative impact in every sector of life, especially in the health sector. Patients with different medical conditions are suffering delays in their surgical treatments. Cleft lip and palate is a common congenital disease that requires early interdisciplinary attention, and there is uncertainty about the safety of performing its surgical treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety of a surgical cleft protocol for cleft lip and palate used during the COVID-19 pandemic at a high volume cleft center in…

OBJECTIVE: There are many adults with cleft lip deformities in developing countries. This is due to the lack of public awareness, social stigma, distance from the health center, and parents' financial condition. Lip repair under local anesthesia is safe, cost-effective and would be beneficial for the underprivileged population.
DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study with follow-up of 1 to 8 years.
SETTING: Academic Hospital.
PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: Cleft lip repair was performed in 252 patients of age more than 12 years from 2012 to 2019. Patients with cleft palate, cardiopulmonary disease, wh…

Dry, cracked lips are a common occurrence in both cold winter months and arid climates, leading many patients to experience discomfort year-round. Lip-licking is a compensatory measure that perpetuates the condition and often leads to lip-licking dermatitis. In patients in whom this compensatory measure becomes a chronic habit, other sequelae such as irritant contact dermatitis, cheilitis simplex, angular cheilitis, factitial cheilitis, secondary infections, and exfoliative cheilitis can arise. Given the high prevalence of lip-licking and subsequent dermatitis, it is important to counsel patie…

PURPOSE: To quantify and compare pre-operative and post-operative volumetric adjustments of the upper lip tissues in patients with cleft lip.
METHODS: The authors performed an anthropometric study and a quantitative analysis of the differences based on three-dimensional morphology of the nasolabial area. Twenty facial images using the three-dimensional stereophotogrammetry were taken from ten selected subjects on two separate occasions, sitting in natural head position. Facial landmarks were marked and measurements recorded, in order to calculate the volumetric adjustments in the soft tissues…

BACKGROUND: The utilization of ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) for cleft lip repair is increasing to reduce costs. This study better defines the patient population appropriate for ambulatory cleft repair with uplift modeling, a predictive analytics technique.
METHODS: Pediatric patients who underwent cleft lip repair were identified in the 2007 to 2011 California Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project State Inpatient Database and State Ambulatory Surgery and Services Database. The 2-model uplift approach was utilized using multivariate logistic regressions fit to assess the effect of ASCs…

Repair of complete bilateral cleft lip with protruding premaxilla is challenging, and postoperative dehiscence was common. Re-repair is usually suggested for the dehisced lip, but other methods might be needed in unique situations. Evaluation was performed to check the presence of prolabial skin, wound scarring, and the position of premaxilla. Reconstruction plan was made to restore the anatomical components as possible and to repair under minimal tension. Two patients with major dehiscence were reported. In the first case, separation from the columella base and tissue destruction in central l…

OBJECTIVE: Thioredoxin (Trx) and metallothionein (MT) are involved in the development of some carcinomas; however, the role of these proteins in labial carcinogenesis has not yet been tested. The aims of the study were to evaluate and to correlate the immunoexpression of Trx and MT in actinic cheilitis, lip squamous cell carcinoma, and normal vermillion lip mucosa.
DESIGN: Immunohistochemistry was undertaken for Trx and MT in samples of actinic cheilitis, lip squamous cell carcinoma, and normal lip mucosa. Qualitative and semi-quantitative evaluations were conducted. The proportion of stained…

BACKGROUND: Lip cancer is one of the most curable primary head and neck malignancies, as the prominent location typically lends to an early diagnosis. The incidence of lip cancer varies by sex, ethnicity, and region, but is estimated to be up to 2.5/100 000 in the United States (squamous cell carcinoma [SCC]).
METHODS: This article will review the current literature and National Comprehensive Cancer Network practice guidelines in the treatment of lip cancer.
RESULTS: Resection of lip cancer with negative margins remains the mainstay of therapy. Positive nodal disease should be treated with n…
