Xeroderma pigmentosa (XP) is a condition inherited as an autosomal recessive trait and is characterized by photosensitivity, pigmentary changes, premature skin ageing and malignant tumour development resulting from the defect in DNA repair. The management of complications of XP, especially orofacial tumours entails an enormous surgical challenge to the clinicians. We present five cases of XP.

BACKGROUND: The face can be divided into regions (units) with characteristic skin quality, border outline, and three-dimensional contour. A defect may lie entirely within a single major unit or encompass several adjacent units, creating unique problems for repair. Composite defects overlap two or more facial units. Nasal defects often extend into the adjacent lip and cheek. The simplest solution may appear to be to simply "fill the hole"--just replace the missing bulk. Poor contour, incorrect dimension, malposition, asymmetry, poor blending into adjacent normal tissues, and a patch-like repair

We report a case of a 71-year-old male with Sézary syndrome diagnosed in 1996 who subsequently developed systemic Hodgkin's lymphoma. His only past treatment was bath psoralen plus ultraviolet A. He has since been treated with multiagent chemotherapy (ChlVPP/PABLOE) which induced a remission in his Hodgkin's disease. Eighteen months later he remains in remission from Hodgkin's disease but the Sézary syndrome remains active. He has also developed a squamous cell carcinoma on the upper lip. Sézary syndrome is a primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma characterized by a malignant proliferation of CD4-p

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry1999eng
Perineural spread (PNS) of mucosal squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck region occurs with a reported frequency of 2% to more than 27%. Patients previously diagnosed with and treated for head and neck cancer should be closely followed by both their physician and their dentist in order to facilitate the coordination of care. This case history demonstrates the results that can occur when a team approach to head and neck cancer is not followed, especially in a patient who is an infrequent and somewhat reluctant health care utilizer. Despite mandibular pain, the patient, who had a history

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the presentation, evaluation, and management of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck in the pediatric population.
METHODS: Medical records of pediatric (≤20 years) patients treated for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck between 1996 and 2016 were reviewed. Data pertaining to clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, treatment plan, complications, recurrence, follow-up, or outcome were collected.
RESULTS: Eleven patients were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. Seven of these patients had medical histories significant for prior malignancies, immuno

PURPOSE: The reconstruction of total lower lip defects is very challenging, whether from trauma or after oncologic treatment. The challenge faced by surgeons is to re-create not only an esthetically pleasing lower lip but also, more importantly, a lip that is functional.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors reviewed their experience at the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville in reconstructing these challenging defects over a 3 year period. The timeline extended from 2007 through 2010. All surgeries were performed by the senior auth

Large full-thickness oral defects involving the oral commissure continue to be a challenge for reconstructive surgeons. Although local flaps are the best option for full-thickness lip reconstruction, they are unavailable for large defects. In particular, recent advances in microsurgery have extended the available surgical options using free flaps, but for full-thickness large oral defects involving the oral commissure, it is still difficult to obtain good function and competence. The major disadvantages are the drooping and loosening of the reconstructed lip and the difficulty in restoring a n

Pai syndrome is a rare congenital disorder first described in 1987. The main clinical features of the syndrome include median cleft of the upper lip, intra-cranial lipoma, and cutaneous polyps. Only four cases have been described previously. This is the fifth who is a twin of Arabian descent to be reported. Full description of the clinico-pathological features and a review of the relevant medical literature is presented. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of Pai syndrome in a twin in the English literature.

This study aimed to evaluate the burden of HPV-related hospitalization and mortality in Greece, with a focus on invasive cervical cancer and lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal (LOCP) cancers. A retrospective query using data from the Greek Statistical Office and Eurostat was executed. The query included hospital admission and standardized mortality rates (SDRs) on cervical dysplasia and cervical, vulvar, and vaginal; anal; penile; and LOCP cancers. The hospitalization rate for invasive cervical cancer decreased over time, exhibiting a sharp decrease after 2010, while the hospitalization rate for

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the cases underwent surgery with the diagnosis of head and neck non melanoma skin malignancies.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical records of 89 patients (33 females, 56 males; mean age 65.4 years; ranges 41 to 87 years) who underwent excision and reconstruction with the diagnosis of skin malignancy at ENT clinics of Ege University Hospital between April 2004 and March 2006 and 101 lesions were retrospectively reviewed. The patients who were diagnosed with non melanoma skin malignancy and whose surgical decisions were concluded at the common council of dermatology clinic,

A canal in the lower lip to function as a reservoir for snuff was surgically created in 150 male Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were randomized into five groups of 30 each: Group I received snuff twice a day, 5 days a wk; Group II was painted with propylene glycol (solvent control) on the hard palate 3 times a wk during 4 wk; Group III underwent painting on the hard palate with 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide (4-NQO) dissolved in propylene glycol, 3 times a wk for 4 wk; Group IV received 4-NQO as in Group III followed by snuff application as in Group I; and Group V received a cotton pellet dipped i

BACKGROUND: Synchronous cancers, defined as malignancies diagnosed concurrently or within 2 months of each other, are rare, with an incidence of 1%-6%. Environmental factors such as tobacco smoking play a significant role in their development. Patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are at increased risk of second malignancies, complicating treatment strategies and prognosis. This report presents a rare case of synchronous SCC of the lower lip and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).
CASE: A 61-year-old male with a history of smoking presented with a 2.5 cm exophytic lesion of

Cancers of the breast, uterine cervix, and lip or oral cavity are three of the most common malignancies in India. Together, they account for about 34% of more than 1 million individuals diagnosed with cancer in India each year. At each of these cancer sites, tumours are detectable at early stages when they are most likely to be cured with standard treatment protocols. Recognising the key role that effective early detection and screening programmes could have in reducing the cancer burden, the Indian Institute for Cytology and Preventive Oncology, in collaboration with the US National Cancer In

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: This study analyzed the distribution, intensity, and pattern of immunohistochemical expression of α2β1, α3β1, and α5β1 integrins in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lower lip and tongue to identify biomarkers that reflect the clinical course of this cancer. Immunoexpression was compared considering prognostic parameters such as anatomic site, metastasis, and histologic grade of malignancy.
RESULTS: Immunohistochemical analysis at the invasion front showed a predominance of granular cytoplasmic expression of the integrins studied. In most cases, immunopositive cells
