Albizia versicolor poisoning of sheep and goats in Malawi.

A report is given of the 1st confirmed outbreak of Albizia versicolor poisoning in Malawi and the 1st natural outbreak reported in sheep and goats. Approximately 800 animals are estimated to have died over a 9-year period on a government farm near Lake Malawi. Deaths occurred exclusively from August to December when ripe dry pods that fell to the ground were ingested. The major clinical signs were hyperaesthesia, wild running, lateral recumbency with rapid leg movements, nystagmus and rapid blinking. Approximately 75% of clinical cases made a full and rapid recovery. Sheep more often showed si

Control, confront or collude: how family and society respond to excessive drinking.

Research on excessive drinking in the family context has revealed the range of ways of coping used by close relatives. Case material from ongoing research in England and Mexico is used to illustrate this point. This research is also revealing the ways in which the family, close and extended, often fail to support the coping actions of close relatives. The analogy is drawn between coping with excessive drinking in the family and coping in the work setting. In the latter context explicit alcohol policies have been developed. These often recommend combining confrontative and supportive coping. It

The post-lockdown period should be used to acquire effective therapies for future resurgence in SARS-Cov-2 infections.

COVID-19 will be with us through the remainder of 2020 and almost certainly beyond. New Zealand needs a viable strategy to protect its populace until a vaccine is developed and in wide use. Until that time, it makes sense to protect the population by putting in place treatments that will be safe and effective, such as the use of convalescent sera and the use of direct-acting anti-virals. These treatments should be sourced externally or made locally, but steps in this direction must now begin as the lockdown ends. New Zealand has the scientists, the facilities and the will to make this happen,

Scalable Density-Based Local and Global Classifications of Noncovalent Interactions.

Noncovalent interactions play a central role in chemistry, biology, and materials science, governing processes ranging from molecular recognition and protein folding to crystal packing and supramolecular assembly. The rational design of these interactions relies on principles such as directionality and complementarity, which control the organization and stability of molecular complexes. Although energetic decomposition analyses can provide insight into these features, their computational cost limits their application to large-scale systems. Here, we introduce a simple density-based descriptor,

Nanoscale Room-Temperature Na Dynamics in Layered Ruthenates Na1RuO3 and Na1.5RuO3.

Understanding the atomic-scale ionic motion and transport in layered transition-metal oxides is essential for elucidating structural stability and electronic behaviour in complex systems. Here, we investigate nanoscale Na dynamics in Na1RuO3 and Na1.5RuO3 using room-temperature ab initiomolecular dynamics at the r2SCAN + U level. While Na mobility plays a key role in local coordination, its nanoscale mechanism remains nuanced and unexplored. Our simulations show that Na ions undergo pervasive rattling, with Na1.5RuO3 enabling exploration of larger volumes and exhibiting incipient migration com

Sti1 participates in the dynamics of protein aggregation triggered by glucose signaling in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Environmental changes put stress on living organisms. We find that nutrient starvation induces dynamic protein aggregations in yeast cells, and many chaperones are involved in this process. Among them, Sti1/HOP, the co-chaperone of Hsp70 and Hsp90, plays roles in the formation of protein quality control (PQC) compartments and protein stasis (or proteostasis) maintenance, and it co-localizes to insoluble protein deposits (IPOD) by liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). Notably, the subcellular localization and cytoplasmic aggregation of Sti1 are rigorously regulated by the PQC machinery, includ

What Explains the Pattern of Fibrosis in Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease?

Fibrosis is common in diverse conditions but has different patterns across tissues and organs despite shared cellular and molecular pathways reasons for which are mostly unexplained. In this review we discuss chronic graft-Versus-host disease (GvHD), progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), primary myelofibrosis (PMF), chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) and VEXAS syndrome to explore potential mechanisms underlying these patterns of fibrosis. We propose the distribution of fibrosis reflects a complex interplay between aetiology, initiating stimuli, local

Effect of the interfacial tension and ionic strength on the thermodynamic barrier associated to the benzocaine insertion into a cell membrane.

The insertion of local anaesthetics into a cell membrane is a key aspect for explaining their activity at a molecular level. It has been described how the potency and response time of local anaesthetics is improved (for clinical applications) when they are dissolved in a solution of sodium bicarbonate. With the aim of gaining insight into the physico-chemical principles that govern the action mechanism of these drugs at a molecular level, simulations of benzocaine in binary lipid bilayers formed by DPPC/DPPS were carried out for different ionic strengths of the aqueous solution. From these mol

Ritual Resilience through Full-Moon Meditation: Reclaiming the Sacred Value of Sojiwan Temple in a Commodified Heritage Landscape.

The commodification of cultural heritage has significantly disrupted the sacredness of religious sites in Indonesia, posing a challenge for communities seeking to preserve spiritual value within economically driven landscapes. This study focuses on Sojiwan Temple, a ninth-century Buddhist monument in Central Java, where full-moon meditation has emerged as a form of ritual resilience that reasserts spiritual authority in the face of dominant secular and touristic agendas. Using ethnographic fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and textual analysis of Buddhist canonical sources, this research examine

Palmitoylation of CLDN12 regulated by ZDHHC7 and APT1/2 promotes hepatitis C virus entry.

UNLABELLED: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) entry is a critical step in establishing infection and is highly dependent on host cell co-receptors. We previously identified that the tight junction protein CLDN12 facilitates HCV entry. However, the regulatory mechanisms governing the dynamic post-translational modifications of CLDN12 remain unclear. This study employs targeted mutagenesis, palmitoylation level analysis, plasma membrane localization, manipulation of key enzymes, and functional virology assays to reveal whether and how reversible palmitoylation regulates the function of CLDN12 in HCV entry

Belgian protocol for indication and selection of patients with unresectable colorectal cancer liver metastases eligible for liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is common in Western countries, about 50% of patients develop liver metastases (CLM). While local CLM therapies can achieve 5-year survival up to 60%, most patients eventually become unresectable (uCLM) and have poor outcomes with systemic treatment alone. Prospective studies, including SECA I and II and the TransMet trial, showed that in carefully selected patients, liver transplantation (LTx) can achieve survival outcomes comparable to standard LTx indications. The aim of this work was to develop a harmonized national consensus protocol for

Virtual Reality-Enabled Physical AI Training for Supportive Nursing Robotics: Nurse-in-the-Loop, Site-Specific Conceptual Framework.

Interest in physical AI and robotics in health care is increasing, but the nursing literature shows that the evidence base remains early, nurse-centered applications are underdeveloped, and real-world experiential evidence is limited. Nurses are more likely to accept robots that reduce physically demanding and repetitive work while preserving the interpersonal and judgment-intensive core of nursing practice. This conceptual paper proposes a nursing-centered framework in which virtual reality functions not merely as a simulator but as a scaffolded training infrastructure for supportive physical

Defect-mediated carbonation pathways at the brucite-gas interface.

HYPOTHESIS: Mineral carbonation is governed by water-mediated interfacial transport and nucleation processes. In bulk aqueous environments, dissolution, transport, and precipitation occur in spatially separated domains, preventing direct resolution of interfacial reaction pathways. We hypothesize that under water-lean conditions local mass redistribution can be directly resolved at the reactive interface, enabling carbonation pathways to be determined through direct tracking of redistributed and newly formed interfacial volumes. EXPERIMENTS: To isolate the interfacial carbonation pathway, we

Paraprofessionals as liminal professionals: The case of physician associates / assistants in the UK NHS hospitals.

We examine how paraprofessional physician associates/assistants (PAs) experience and navigate their everyday work, drawing on 126 interviews and one focus group across five NHS hospitals in England and Scotland. PAs described sustained ambiguity around their professional regulation and scope of practice, their ambiguous positioning between doctors and nurses, and organisationally being physically embedded within medical teams but governed under non-medical frameworks. We explain PAs' experiences of liminal enduring status drawing on Söderlund and Borg's (2018) conceptualisation of liminal proc

Controlling Radiative Phonons in the van der Waals Ferroelectric NbOI2.

The optical properties of quantum systems are fundamentally governed by their electromagnetic environment through the local density of optical states (LDOS), enabling powerful control over atomic, excitonic, and electronic transitions. However, the radiative properties of phonons have remained largely unexplored within this framework of environmental engineering. Here we demonstrate LDOS control of terahertz (THz) phonon emission in the van der Waals ferroelectric NbOI2 using a simple mirror geometry. By modifying the photonic environment, we achieve pronounced and reversible tuning of the pho

SNAP-47 mediates somatic oxytocin dynamics in hypothalamic neurons.

The neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) plays a crucial role in regulating homeostatic responses and complex behaviors, including social interaction. OT can be released from somatodendritic regions, enabling communication through retrograde, autocrine, and volume transmission. However, the mechanisms governing somatodendritic OT dynamics and their impact on neuronal function and behavior are not yet fully understood. Our study identifies SNAP-47, a member of the SNAP-25 protein family highly expressed in the soma of peptidergic neurons in the mouse hypothalamus, where it exhibits a close interaction wi

Rethinking cholera response: an orchestration framework for future preparedness in fragile conflict-affected settings, a case study from Sudan, 2025.

INTRODUCTION: The ongoing conflict in Sudan has intensified the country's already fragile public health landscape. Since July 2024, Sudan has faced one of the most extensive cholera outbreaks in its modern history, affecting 17 states and 109 localities and resulting in 83,245 reported cases and 2,124 deaths by June 2025. Traditional, hierarchical outbreak response systems have proven insufficient in such a dynamic, volatile environment. METHODS: Using Sudan's 2024-2025 cholera outbreak as a case study, this paper proposes the Orchestrated Symphony Model, an innovative framework that integrat

Association of Cdc42/N-WASP/Arp2/3 signaling pathway with Golgi membranes.

Recent findings indicate that Cdc42 regulates Golgi-to-ER (endoplasmic reticulum) protein transport through N-WASP and Arp2/3 (Luna et al. 2002, Mol. Biol. Cell, 13:866-879). To analyse the components of the Cdc42-governed signaling pathway in the secretory pathway, we localized Cdc42, N-WASP and Arp2/3 in the Golgi complex by cryoimmunoelectron microscopy. Cdc42 is found throughout the Golgi stack, particularly in cis/middle cisternae, whereas N-WASP and Arp3 (a component of the Arp2/3 complex) are restricted to cis cisternae. Arp3 also colocalized in peri-Golgi tubulovesicular structures wit
