INTRODUCTION: Severe asthma attacks are life-threatening, and require serious medical attention. Intravenous MgSO₄ is an efficient medication, proven to improve outcomes. To date, most research has focused on administration of nebulized MgSO₄ in adults with critical asthma. However, its benefits for treating childhood asthma has been little investigated. METHODS: Nineteen postmenopausal women, age 47 to 78 y, completed a metabolic unit study as designed. Cerebral intraventricular injections of 17 and 50 microgram magnesium in artificial cerebrospinal fluid progressively depressed the Non-specific Excitability Level of permanently cannulated 150--200 g rats fed a low magnesium diet for 21 days. Compared with control diet, a low Mg diet caused an increase in brain serotonin.
