The value of transmandibular approach to total maxillectomy in the management of T3-T4 carcinoma of the maxillary sinus.

Surgical excision of the maxilla either as a primary procedure or after radiotherapy continues to play an important role in the management of carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. A majority of these cancers are seen in T3-T4 stage. Recurrence at the infratemporal fossa has been recognized as a major cause of failure. Although the importance of inclusion of the pterygopalatine fossa in the field of excision has been recognized, there is no uniform approach for en bloc removal of the pterygopalatine fossa. Transmandibular approach has been described for purpose and practiced at the Bangalore Instit

Gustatory rhinorrhea after maxillectomy. Two case reports and considerations on etiology and pathophysiology.

Gustatory rhinorrhea consists of free discharge of thin mucus from the nose during ingestion or after other gustatory stimulus. At maxillectomy, the nerve fibers going both to the salivary glands of the palate and to the secretory glands of the nasal mucosa may be damaged. A misdirection between the regenerating fibers of these two groups produces gustatory rhinorrhea.

Biomechanical evaluation of two miniplate fixations applied in the anterior region after Le Fort I osteotomy: an experimental study.

The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the reliability of two-plate fixations applied to the anterior region of the maxilla after Le Fort I osteotomy in terms of stability. Twenty polyurethane-based skull models were used to evaluate two fixation techniques. Two groups consisting of four and two L-shaped titanium miniplates were tested. Each group was tested with the application of vertical forces in the anteroposterior direction using a servohydraulic testing unit. The displacement values in each group at each stage (from 10 N - 120 N) were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test.

Surgical management of transverse maxillary deficiency in patients with cleft lip and palate: A systematic review and current considerations.

BACKGROUND: Transverse maxillary deficiency is a common component of craniofacial deformities in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP). In skeletally mature patients, conventional orthopedic expansion is frequently insufficient because of increased circummaxillary skeletal resistance, scar tissue, and altered maxillary anatomy. Surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) enables controlled skeletal widening of the maxilla; however, treatment protocols, surgical techniques, and outcome assessment remain highly heterogeneous. OBJECTIVES: To critically evaluate the available evidence

Maxillary Sinus Lift Procedures: An Overview of Current Techniques, Presurgical Evaluation, and Complications.

A maxillary sinus lift procedure is indicated if a dental implant needs to be placed in the posterior maxilla with limited bone available to accommodate a dental implant. Both open and closed sinus lifting procedures are reliable approaches for increasing the bone volume needed to support proper implant positioning. However, these methods can lead to several complications. In addition to the general complications commonly linked to oral surgery, such as swelling or hematoma, the primary complication in open sinus lifting is typically the perforation of the Schneiderian membrane during osteotom

Ossifying Fibroma in the Nasal Cavity of a 2-Year-Old Horse.

A 2-year-old mare of an unknown breed was referred to the clinic due to undetermined breathing difficulties. Physical examination revealed painless swelling rostral to the nasoincisive notch and a large, firm mass protruding from the left nostril. Radiographic examination of the head revealed a mass occupying the left nasal cavity and a displaced and hypoplastic last premolar of the left maxilla. The CT scan showed a well-demarcated heterogeneous mass measuring 22 × 9 × 5 cm (length × height × width) in the left nasal cavity attached to the roots of the displaced tooth and conchae. The surgery

Surgical timing of craniosynostosis: what to do and when.

Craniosynostosis, both isolated and syndromic, are challenging malformations for the craniofacial team. They present the team with an articulated cascade of choices, which need to be addressed early in life and in the growing age to intercept, remove, or correct the direct and indirect consequences of the malformation. Timing of treatment is thus critical and it stands on the experience of a multi-specialty trained craniofacial team. In this paper the authors discuss the timing of treatment of the major craniosynostosis, isolated and syndromic, reviewing the options for treatment and their exp

The Liquid Guide System: Design and Clinical Feasibility of an Internally Irrigated 3D-Printed Surgical Guide for Implant Surgery.

Background/Objectives: Thermal injury during implant osteotomy is a recognized complication of guided surgery. Closed guide architectures and metallic sleeves restrict coolant access to the drill-bone interface, reducing the effectiveness of conventional external irrigation. This study aimed to describe the design and fabrication of a 3D-printed surgical guide system with integrated internal irrigation channels and to evaluate its technical and clinical feasibility in guided implant surgery. Methods: The system was developed by integrating CBCT and IOS data into BlueSky Bio planning software.
