A juvenile raccoon was euthanized because of severe neurologic signs. At postmortem examination, no significant gross lesions were present. Histologic evaluation demonstrated nonsuppurative encephalitis in thalamus, brainstem, and hippocampus, cerebellar Purkinje cell loss, as well as poliomyelitis and demyelination of the spinal cord. As part of a long-term, peatland-scale sulfate addition experiment, the impact of varying sulfate deposition on bacterial community responses was assessed using 16S tag encoded pyrosequencing. OBJECTIVE: To review clinical experience at our institution on postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) complicating pregnancy.
METHODS: In a retrospective review, we identified nine pregnancies in seven patients with POTS syndrome at our institution.
RESULTS: Patients who did not require treatment for POTS before conception were less likely to have an exacerbation of symptoms or need reintroduction of treatment. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends educating college freshmen about meningococcal disease and vaccinating all college freshmen who live in residence halls. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement has become a mainstay alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement in patients with severe aortic stenosis at high and intermediate surgical risk. The effects of bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) lesions on emotional and personality functioning were studied. Patients undergoing cingulotomy for chronic intractable pain were assessed on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), the Profile of Mood States (POMS), cognitive tests, and pain ratings, pre- and postsurgically. We completed a prospective, population-based cohort study of polio survivors in Olmsted County, Minnesota, between 1986 and 1993. We identified 50 individuals who had had paralytic polio between 1935 and 1960, as representative of all 300 cases of paralytic polio in the county. We completed detailed quantitative clinical and electrophysiologic studies at entry and after 5 years. Thirty-one patients underwent hemodialysis for renal failure as a complication of major cardiovascular surgery at the University of Minnesota (1968-1973). Only eight patients (26%) survived. A review of the literature shows that since the beginning of hemodialysis the mortality of those patients has not improved. Infection was the overwhelming cause of death.
