[Physiopathology of rosacea. Redness, telangiectasia, and rosacea].

The physiopathology of rosacea involves a large number of factors that are at times difficult to correlate. There is not a single physiopathological model. Nevertheless, today it seems to have been established that two essential factors are involved: vascular and inflammatory. The disease occurs in individuals with a predisposition, mainly a light phototype subjected to substantial variations in climate. On a background of primary vascular anomaly, external factors (climate, exposure to ultraviolet rays, cutaneous flora, etc.) contribute to the development of abnormal superficial blood vessels

[Demodicidosis in a female patient treated as allergic blepharoconjunctivitis. A case report].

A 65-year old woman suffered from therapy resistant chronic blepharoconjunctivitis and rosacea, without improvement under therapy of systemic and topic antibiotics and topic steroids and antihistamines. Demodex folliculorum was found adhered to the hair bulb on microscopic examination. She received oral ivermectin with good response. Two months later demodicidosis recurred. Then she was treated with a combination of ivermectin and transfer factor with total remission. Demodex folliculorum considered as saprophytic mite may play a pathogenic role in ocular diseases.

Demodex folliculorum in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Demodex folliculorum (DF), which is a resident in human pilosebaceous follicles, has been implicated in rosacea, blepharitis, pityriasis folliculorum, pustular folliculitis, and skin lesions of immunosuppressed patients on chemotherapy or with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the influence of pregnancy on the carriage of DF. METHODS: Mite density in 40 pregnant women was compared with that of age- and sex-matched controls. Two standardized skin surface biopsies were taken from each subject. Results In pregnant women, DF was found at 0.55

Fleas, lice and mites on scrub hares (Lepus saxatilis) in northern and eastern Transvaal and in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Fleas, lice and mites were collected from 24 and 120 scrub hares at Pafuri and Skukuza, Northern and Eastern Transvaal, respectively, in the Kruger National Park, and from 34 scrub hares in the Hluhluwe region, north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal. Ctenocephalides felis damarensis, the only flea recovered, reached peak burdens on the hares at each locality during late winter or spring. Juvenile hares harboured significantly fewer fleas than did adult animals. The lice Haemodipsus lyriocephalus and Haemodipsus setoni were collected from hares at each locality, with H. setoni generally being the most abu

Mites in cat ears: a source of cross antigenicity with house dust mites. Preliminary report.

Dermatophagoides had been established as an antigen in house dust by many investigators. An untapped source of cross antigenicity is presented in this paper, namely, Otodectes cyanotis, the mite found in the ears of millions of cats. House dust samples for mite species in other parts of the world may not be similar to samples in the United States since in most other countries the cat exists outdoors, whereas in this country it is a household pet.

Effects of microwave and various combinations of ambient temperature and humidity exposures on off-host survival of northern fowl mites.

When northern fowl mites, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini and Fanzago), were removed from their host and exposed to ambient temperatures ranging from -15 to 49 C with uncontrolled relative humidity (RH) or to temperatures ranging from .3 to 38 C with an RH of ca. 75%, mites lived longest at 4 C. However, temperatures between .3 and 26 C were also conducive to survival. Temperatures above 43 C killed the mites in less than 5 hr; mites exposed to -15 C lived up to 5 days. A constant humidity of ca. 75% was most beneficial to the mites when temperatures ranged from 33 to 38 C. Manipulation of

[Parasite fauna of red foxes in Berlin (West)].

The infestation with ecto- and endoparasites of red foxes in Berlin (West) was investigated. As shown by post mortems of 100 animals (47 males and 53 females), none of them was found to be free of parasites. With regard to ectoparasites, 3 species of ixodes ticks, 7 flea species, one species of biting lice and mite species were demonstrated. The sarcoptic mange is often inducing the death of the foxes and is considered to be a limiting factor of the population increment. Concerning endoparasites, cestodes (6 species), trematodes (7 species), nematodes (10 species) and 3 coccidian species were

Improving Apis mellifera iberiensis colony development through a combined spring oxalic acid and autumn amitraz treatment for varroosis control.

Varroa destructor is one of the most important threats to Apis mellifera in warm climates, where extended brood-rearing cycles facilitate exponential growth of the parasite. In attempts to control this mite, Spanish legislation (RD 608/2006) currently mandates one annual treatment in autumn, although this strategy often fails to prevent the parasite from compromising colony health. Here, the mite reduction and safety of supplementing this mandatory treatment (amitraz in slow-release strips, Apitraz®) of A. m. iberiensis colonies in Guadalajara (Spain) with a spring application of slow-release

First record of chigger mites (Acari: Trombiculidae) parasitizing birds in the Ogasawara Islands.

Larvae of trombiculid mites (Acari: Trombiculidae), known as chiggers, are ectoparasites that parasitize various animals and transmit pathogens such as Orientia tsutsugamushi. We report the first record of chigger mites in the Ogasawara Islands, collected from Bonin Greenfinch Chloris kittlitzi and Warbling White-eyes Zosterops japonicus. By morphological and molecular analysis, the chiggers were identified to the genus Toritrombicula which predominantly parasitize avian hosts. Although the mites could not be identified to the species level, this finding provides new insight into the distribut

Ocular Demodex: a systematic review of the clinical literature.

PURPOSE: There is increasing clinical and research interest in the potential contribution of Demodex to ocular surface disease. The aim of this systematic review was to summarise and synthesise current clinical evidence relating to the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of ocular Demodex. RECENT FINDINGS: A comprehensive literature search was performed in OVID Medline, OVID Embase, and clinical trial registries, for studies published between 1990 and August 2019, examining Demodex on the ocular surface. The review included primary clinical research studies and systematic reviews of primary cl

A New Species of Morelacarus (Acariformes: Prostigmata: Leeuwenhoekiidae) Associated With Sceloporus grammicus (Squamata: Phrynosomatidae) From the Mexican Plateau, Zacatecas, Mexico.

A new species of chigger mites, Morelacarus uazi n. sp., parasitizing lizards of the species Sceloporus grammicus from Mazapil, Zacatecas, Mexico, is described and illustrated. This new taxon differs from other species of the genus by having a palpal claw with 4 subequal paired prongs, and it can be further distinguished by the combination of the following characters: presence of onychotriches and mastitarsala III, absence of mastitibiala III, subterminala I, and parasubterminala I, and the palpal setal formula B/B/BBb. Additionally, an identification key for the species of the genus Morelacar
