The Sexual Dimorphic Synapse: From Spine Density to Molecular Composition.

A synaptic sexual dimorphism is relevant in the context of multiple neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Many of these disorders show a different prevalence and progression in woman and man. A similar variance is also present in corresponding animal models. To understand and characterize this dimorphism in pathologies it is important to first understand sex differences in unaffected individuals. Therefore, sexual differences have been studied since 1788, first focusing on brain weight, size, and volume. But as these measures are not directly related to brain f

Identifying intangible assets in interprofessional healthcare organizations: feasibility of an asset inventory.

Healthcare systems increasingly use business models that focus on tangible assets such as finances and facilities. Yet intangible assets, such as values, relationships and human capital, remain critical for understanding the worth of interprofessional healthcare education and collaboration. We implemented a novel interprofessional collaborative pilot exercise to explore the feasibility and usefulness of an Asset Inventory-using KJ methodology and an appreciative inquiry perspective-to identify and better understand intangible assets and their value in interprofessional healthcare education/tra

The GEOSS solution for enabling data interoperability and integrative research.

Global sustainability research requires an integrative research effort underpinned by digital infrastructures (systems) able to harness data and heterogeneous information across disciplines. Digital data and information sharing across systems and applications is achieved by implementing interoperability: a property of a product or system to work with other products or systems, present or future. There are at least three main interoperability challenges a digital infrastructure must address: technological, semantic, and organizational. In recent years, important international programs and initi

Causal chain mapping: a novel method to analyse treatment compliance decisions relating to lymphatic filariasis elimination in Alor, Indonesia.

Many public health programmes require individuals to comply with particular behaviours that are novel to them, for example, acquiring new eating habits, accepting immunizations or taking a new medication. In particular, mass drug administration programmes only work to reduce the prevalence of a disease if significant proportions of the target population take the drug in question. In such cases, knowledge of the factors most likely to lead to high levels of compliance is crucial to the programme's success. Existing models of compliance tend to either address interpersonal, organizational or psy

[Planning for the Possible in Healthcare: From PEIMAF to the Management of the Unknown.].

This paper examines the evolution of healthcare planning in light of the increasing complexity of contemporary emergencies, which are characterized by high levels of uncertainty and the frequent absence of established interpretative models. Starting from the historical role of Hospital Emergency Plans for Mass Casualty Incidents (PEIMAF), the article highlights the limitations of approaches based solely on known scenarios and proposes a conceptual shift toward managing the unknown. It outlines the need to broaden the operational meaning of PEIMAF, extending it to all types of patients and tran

Computational study of bacterial chromosome organization by H-NS-mediated cross-linking and molecular crowding.

Chromosomes are organized by nucleoid-associated proteins within a densely packed cellular environment crowded with freely diffusing macromolecules, often referred to as crowders. Using a coarse-grained computational model, we examine the physical effects of the protein H-NS and molecular crowders on bacterial chromosome organization. In our model, an H-NS dimer with two binding sites cross-links a coarse-grained DNA polymer with a ring topology. Our simulations reveal the complex organizational behavior of the polymer. At low crowder volume fractions (≲0.2), the polymer adopts a heterogeneous

Workplace ostracism and job performance: revisiting the limits of employee engagement in addressing workplace exclusion.

Workplace ostracism represents a subtle but damaging form of workplace exclusion that can weaken employees' psychological functioning and job-related outcomes. Drawing on self-regulation theory (SRT), this study examines the association between workplace ostracism and employee job performance and investigates whether employee engagement moderates this relationship. Data were collected from 477 employees working in IT, banking and insurance, BPO, and supply-chain/service roles and analysed using partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) through SmartPLS 4. The findings show t

Transition Shock and Work Readiness Among Newly Employed Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study of the Mediating Role of Professional Self-Efficacy.

BACKGROUND: This study examined how professional self-efficacy mediates the relationship between transition shock and work readiness in newly employed nurses. Transition shock challenges novice nurses, affecting their confidence and practice readiness. Research has explored structural and organizational factors contributing to this phenomenon, including workload, time pressure, staffing constraints, role ambiguity, and limited transition support through orientation/preceptorship and supervision. However, understanding of psychological resources that can mitigate these demands is limited. This

Explicating the process of moral courage in clinical nurses: a grounded theory study.

Moral courage in nurses is the product of a complex process and can be enhanced by identifying the steps through which nurses make morally courageous decisions. This qualitative study aimed to explicate the process of moral courage in clinical nurses and present a descriptive model. The study was conducted in Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences in 2022 using the grounded theory approach. Twenty-one clinical nurses were selected through purposive and theoretical sampling. Data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's 2015 approach and data management was supported by MAXQDA software (vers

Complex abdomen: proposal of a preliminary conceptual framework, clinical implications, and contemporary perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: The open abdomen has become a cornerstone in the care of critically ill patients undergoing damage control surgery, with severe abdominal sepsis, or at risk of abdominal compartment syndrome. These patients frequently develop a multidimensional clinical course - persistent infection, organ failure, loss of abdominal wall integrity, nutritional depletion, and entero-atmospheric fistulas - whose severity appears to emerge from the dynamic interaction among these factors rather than from visceral exposure alone. Current classifications, notably Björck's amended classification, descr

Medical-Bioethical Mediation as a Potential Governance Innovation for Sustainable, Efficient, and Resilient Healthcare Systems.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Healthcare systems increasingly operate through dense networks of clinicians, managers, public health authorities, institutions, and communities. Disagreement is no longer confined to bedside decisions; it also affects coordination, legitimacy, and implementation at system level. Bioethics, administrative governance, and consultation processes address important parts of this problem, but they do not by themselves provide a dedicated process for handling persistent disagreement, mistrust, and competing values across actors and institutions. This paper proposes medical-bio

Facilitators and Barriers to adherence to antiretroviral therapy among incarcerated people living with HIV in Iran: insights from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring consistent adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is crucial for effective HIV treatment and achieving viral suppression. Within prisons, the prevalence of HIV is notably high, and incarcerated individuals face an increased risk of transmitting the virus both during and after incarceration. However, facilitators and barriers to ART adherence among these individuals in low- and middle-income countries remain inadequately explored. This study applied the Social Ecological Model (SEM) to investigate how various individual, interpersonal, organizational, community and polic

How an emergency department is organized to provide opioid-specific harm reduction and facilitators and barriers to harm reduction implementation: a systems perspective.

BACKGROUND: The intersection of dual public health emergencies-the COVID-19 pandemic and the drug toxicity crisis-has led to an urgent need for acute care based harm reduction for unregulated opioid use. Emergency Departments (EDs) as Complex Adaptive Systems (CASs) with multiple, interdependent, and interacting elements are suited to deliver such interventions. This paper examines how the ED is organized to provide harm reduction and identifies facilitators and barriers to implementation in light of interactions between system elements. METHODS: Using a case study design, we conducted interv
