New reproductive technologies, genetic counselling and the standing of the fetus: views from Germany and Israel.

This paper reports findings from a comparative study of Israeli and German genetic counsellors' perceptions of the moral standing of the fetus. Data collected through in-depth interviews with counsellors in both countries (N=32) are presented, and their moral practices are analysed. The paper's findings suggest that while German counsellors perceive the fetus as an autonomous being and debate the particular biological stages through which this autonomy is acquired; Israeli counsellors do not consider the moral status of the fetus independently of its relations with its family hence, deploying

Sex between people with "mental retardation": an ethical evaluation.

Is sex between people with "mental retardation" [1] morally permissible and, if at all, under what conditions? This paper tries to answer this question, but only with regard to sex between biologically mature individuals with mild or moderate mental retardation. First, the concepts of "sexual activity" and mental retardation" are analysed briefly, which is challenging given the widely divergent and sometimes rather awkward definitions of these concepts. On the basis of this analysis, it is argued that the liberal principle of mutual consent, if taken as a necessary condition of permissible sex

An indigenous conceptualization of reactive depression in Trinidad.

While depressive reactions appear to be universal, until recently they have seldom been described outside Europe, probably because of their lack of exotic salience, but also because they are seldom identified locally as distinct entities. Where it occurs, such an identification reflects a local preference for the articulation of individual psychological notions, rather than universal moral imperatives. While the symptoms of reactive depression are recognized in rural Trinidad as a common experience, but not especially remarked, they are also identified by Afro-Caribbeans as a specific state, T

Effective Polypectomy Practice.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of leading causes of cancer-related morality globally. Colonoscopy with polypectomy allows for resection of dysplastic polyps and early CRC, and has been shown to reduce the incidence of CRC and CRC-related morality. This article highlights several important aspects of an effective polypectomy practice including visual inspection, polypectomy techniques, and their respective indications, adverse events, and indications for referral. Most endoscopists will not be competent in all polypectomy and resection techniques on completion of training and ongoing education

The Principle of "Damage Exclusion" as a Benchmark in Catholic Discussions of Homologous Artificial Insemination.

The Catholic perspective rejects assisted human reproduction techniques, but the morality of artificial insemination (AI) is open for discussion. This article aims to analyze the morality of AI from a new angle, namely whether these interventions exclude all possibility of damaging the human embryo and the offspring's health. The scientific evidence about the children's health who are born through AI allows us to affirm that the procedures do not comply with the principle of damage exclusion: AI does not exclude all possibility of damaging the embryo and impacting the health and exposure to di

[Controversy in the treatment of a critically ill neonate in a rural health service].

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation of newborns with perinatal hypoxia faces serious ethical, moral, medical and legal problems, particularly in rural areas. Ethical and moral issues have to do with the medical-parents relationship; with values, preferences and priorities of each of these groups; and with the scarce resources situation. Medical-technical problems are related to asphyxia complications, and their prognostic and therapeutic implications. Legal considerations arising from the fact of killing or letting die. In this article is analyzed the real case of a neonate with severe perinatal hyp

Stopping nutrition and hydration technologies: a conflict between traditional Catholic ethics and church authority.

This article focuses on the troubling effects of the secular values of individual freedom and autonomy and their impact on laws regarding suicide and euthanasia. The author argues that in an increasingly secularized culture, death and dying are losing their meaning and are not thought of within a moral framework. The debate regarding the provision of artificial nutrition and hydration is critically considered in light of the history of Catholic morality as well as within the modern healthcare context, and finally with new insight from the recent statements made by the late pope. Drane argues t

When uncertainty becomes guilt: The moralisation of home urinary stoma care after bladder cancer surgery in China.

In post-discharge urinary stoma care, family members are often expected not only to perform technical tasks but also to interpret bodily problems and decide when professional help is needed. Existing research has documented caregiver burden, distress, and psychological strain extensively, but less is known about how guilt is produced through family relationships, uncertainty, and moral expectations of care. This study examines how informal caregivers of bladder cancer patients with urinary stomas in China described guilt, self-blame, and uncertainty in home care, and under what conditions unce

"Where my responsibility lies": Reflecting on medicine during the Holocaust to support personal and professional identity formation in health professions education.

OBJECTIVES: Physicians and the medical/scientific establishment during Nazism and the Holocaust committed egregious ethical violations including complicity with genocide. Critical reflection on this history serves as a powerful platform for scaffolding morally resilient professional identity formation (PIF) with striking relevance for contemporary health professions education and practice. Study aim was to explore the impact of an Auschwitz Memorial study trip within the context of a medicine during Nazism and the Holocaust curriculum on students' personal and PIF. METHODS: The authors analyz

A matter of respect: a defense of the dead donor rule and of a "whole-brain" criterion for determination of death.

Many accounts of the historical development of neurological criteria for determination of death insufficiently distinguish between two strands of interpretation advanced by advocates of a "whole-brain" criterion. One strand focuses on the brain as the organ of integration. Another provides a far more complex and nuanced account, both of death and of a policy on the determination of death. Current criticisms of the whole-brain criterion are effective in refuting the first interpretation, but not the second, which is advanced in the 2008 President's Council report on the determination of death.

Construction and application of a professional ethics assessment framework for university teachers in China.

INTRODUCTION: Clarifying the conceptual boundaries and assessment dimensions of university teachers' professional ethics is a prerequisite for strengthening ethical standards in higher education. This study aimed to examine the connotation and constituent elements of university teachers' professional ethics, develop a systematic assessment framework, and preliminarily evaluate its applicability. METHODS: An integrated qualitative and quantitative research design was employed. On the basis of theoretical analysis and empirical investigation, a two-dimensional assessment framework was developed

Palliative sedation as a cultural solution in Israel: a philosophical-ethical inquiry into end-of-life practice in a multicultural society.

Palliative sedation (PS) is a morally complex end-of-life practice that sits at the intersection of medicine, law, religion, and culture. While often framed as a purely clinical intervention aimed at alleviating intractable suffering, this article argues that PS functions—particularly in pluralistic societies such as Israel—as a form of ethical mediation and cultural accommodation. Through a philosophical-theoretical inquiry, this paper explores PS not as a universally justified act, but as a “cultural solution”: a pragmatic ethical practice that enables care to proceed amid deep moral disagre

Relating rightly: Toward a relational-ethical framework for peer support service through an ethnographic study in China.

Peer workers have become increasingly incorporated into addiction services worldwide, yet mainstream frameworks continue to approach their work in terms of individual roles, clinical outcomes, or organizational barriers and facilitators to implementation. These approaches often overlook the relational and ethical dimensions through which peer support is practiced and experienced, particularly under conditions of stigma, social exclusion, and structural constraint. This study draws on 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork (February 2021-July 2022) in a nonpeer-led nonprofit organization in easter

An international tournament of risk factors for radical intentions: evidence from 40 countries.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the risk factors linked to violent extremism remains a central challenge in radicalization research. This study examined which risk factors are most robustly associated with radical intentions-the willingness to use violence in support of an ideology. METHODS: Using general-population samples from 40 countries (N = 10,407) and a complementary sample of incarcerated jihadists (N = 80), we placed the 12 strongest established correlates identified in Wolfowicz's (2021) meta-analysis into direct multivariate competition. Analyses included conditional random forests, mu

Cannabis consumption and prosociality.

The existing literature largely focuses on health risks and other pharmacodynamics of using cannabis, with fewer investigations of other normative psychological effects from consumption among otherwise healthy people. We measured several basic constructs of social psychology corresponding to the concept of prosociality among 146 healthy young adults between 18 and 25 years (M = 18.9, SD = 1.4) with varying detectable levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in their urine, controlling for participant's sex, age, ethnicity, and childhood socio-economic status. Compared to THC-free individuals, cann

Family-Centered Culture Care: Touched by an Angel.

An Asian Indian Hindu family chose no intervention and hospice care for their newborn with hypoplastic right heart syndrome as an ethical option, and the newborn expired after five days. Professional nursing integrates values-based practice and evidence-based care with cultural humility when providing culturally responsive family-centered culture care. Each person's worldview is unique as influenced by culture, language, and religion, among other factors. The Nursing Team sought to understand this family's collective Indian Hindu worldview and end-of-life beliefs, values, and practices, in vie

Predicting blood donation intentions and behavior among Australian blood donors: testing an extended theory of planned behavior model.

BACKGROUND: Donor retention poses a significant problem to blood collection agencies around the world. Previous research using an augmented theory of planned behavior (TPB) approach has demonstrated that attitude, subjective norm, self-efficacy, moral norm, anticipated regret, donation anxiety from prior blood donations, and self-identity as a blood donor predicts experienced donors' intentions and that intentions, self efficacy, moral norm, and anticipated regret may impact upon people's actual blood donation behavior. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Established blood donors (n = 263) completed qu
