Can seat suspensions mitigate motion sickness and enhance vibration comfort while being driven? A subjective assessment of the K-Seat.

Prolonged exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) is a key contributor to motion discomfort in vehicles, including motion sickness and ride comfort. This issue becomes more compelling in automated vehicles, where occupants are expected to frequently engage in non-driving-related activities and will expect high comfort levels. Hence, enhancing seat design to mitigate WBV is essential for improving ride comfort across vehicle types. Therefore, this study, which primarily addresses vertical accelerations, optimized an existing seat suspension (K-Seat) and subjectively assessed discomfort using 24 …

Virtual reality-induced motion sickness under autonomous vehicle driving conditions: EEG-based recognition and ANOVA analysis of various driving modes.

Motion sickness induced by autonomous driving technology poses a new challenge to the emerging sustainable transportation systems. This study investigates the association between motion sickness in autonomous driving and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals under three laboratory-based simulated scenarios: manual driving, resting, and autonomous driving. EEG data were recorded from participants in each mode, alongside the collection of motion sickness symptoms through questionnaires. Data analysis and exploration were conducted to explore the relationship between autonomous driving-induced motio…

Korean hand acupressure for motion sickness in prehospital trauma care: a prospective, randomized, double-blinded trial in a geriatric population.

UNLABELLED: Patients with trauma or medical illnesses transported to the hospital by ambulance have a frequent incidence of motion sickness. Because the administration of drugs in the ambulance is prohibited by law in Austria, the noninvasive Korean hand acupressure point at K-K9 may be an alternative against nausea and vomiting. We enrolled 100 geriatric patients with minor trauma, randomizing them into a K-K9 group and a sham acupressure group. We recorded visual analog scores (VAS) for nausea and for the patient's overall satisfaction with the treatment, hemodynamic variables, and periphera…

Quantitative evaluation of the effect of visually-induced motion sickness using causal coherence function between blood pressure and heart rate.

To evaluate the effect of visually-induced motion sickness on the human, blood pressure variability (BP) and heart rate variability (HR) of 51 normal subjects watching a 15min-long video image taken by a vibrating handy camera were analyzed. Not only coherence function (K/sup 2/) between BP and HR but also two causal coherence functions: K/sup 2//sub BP-->HR/ from BP to HR and K/sup 2//sub HR-->BP/ from HR to BP were introduced to divide causal linearity of the cardiovascular system regarded as a closed-loop system. K/sup 2/ represents total linearity of the system. K/sup 2//sub BP-->HR/ and K…

Just 1-min exposure to a pure tone at 100 Hz with daily exposable sound pressure levels may improve motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is a common transportation issue worldwide. Vestibular dysfunction has been reported to be a key etiology of motion sickness. However, there are limited technologies for alleviating motion sickness. METHODS: The most appropriate frequency (Hz) and level (dBZ) of pure tone for modulation of vestibular function were determined by an ex vivo study using murine utricle explants. The preventive effects of the selected pure tone on motion sickness were then confirmed by using a beam balance test in mice. The alleviating effects of pure tone on motion sickness induced by …

Effects of passenger body movements in a visual task during and after vehicle rotation on post-rotatory illusion and motion sickness.

We explored how body movements influence illusory body motion intensity and their association with motion sickness. Twelve individuals who were seated in the back of a passenger car, performed a visual task and were subjected to continuous rotations followed by driving in a straight line. The body movements during and immediately after rotation were categorized as follows: (A) upright posture; (B) leaning the body in the yaw direction towards the rotation center, returning the yaw angle to zero upon transitioning to straight line travel, and tilting in the roll condition and gradually returnin…

Individual-difference factors in visually induced motion sickness and vection: Findings from multiple studies on field dependence, age, and biological sex.

The illusion of self-motion provoked by dynamic visual stimulation is known as vection and is a common phenomenon when using visual displays such as virtual reality, video games, or movie theatres. Vection has been historically linked to visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), a phenomenon similar to traditional motion sickness characterized by various symptoms including nausea, fatigue, or eyestrain. Many factors are associated with an individual's susceptibility to VIMS and vection, but their impact is not well understood. Here, we investigated how field dependence, biological sex, and age …

Brown Slime Cap Mushroom (Chroogomphus rutilus, Agaricomycetes) Polysaccharide Resists Motion Sickness by Inhibiting the Activity of the Serotonin System in Mice.

Motion sickness (MS) is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system caused by abnormal exercise with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and drowsiness. More than 90% of the human population has experienced different degrees of MS. At present, anticholinergics, antihistamines, and sympathomimetic drugs are used for treating MS, but these drugs generally have some adverse reactions and are not suitable for all people. Therefore, it is necessary to develop anti-MS drugs that have high efficiency and no adverse effects. Previous studies have found that Chroogomphus rutilus polysaccharide (CRP) is ef…

Prior transfusion of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells can effectively alleviate symptoms of motion sickness in mice through interleukin 10 secretion.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) is a disease that occurs during unbalanced movement, characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms and autonomic nervous system activation. Current clinical treatments for MS are limited. Recent evidence indicates that the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines increase during MS and are associated with an inner ear immune imbalance. In the present study, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to exert strong immuno-suppressive effects. AIM: To explore whether umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) can prevent the occurrence of MS, and the u…

Identification of neural networks that contribute to motion sickness through principal components analysis of fos labeling induced by galvanic vestibular stimulation.

Motion sickness is a complex condition that includes both overt signs (e.g., vomiting) and more covert symptoms (e.g., anxiety and foreboding). The neural pathways that mediate these signs and symptoms are yet to identified. This study mapped the distribution of c-fos protein (Fos)-like immunoreactivity elicited during a galvanic vestibular stimulation paradigm that is known to induce motion sickness in felines. A principal components analysis was used to identify networks of neurons activated during this stimulus paradigm from functional correlations between Fos labeling in different nuclei. …

Investigation of visually induced motion sickness in dynamic 3D contents based on subjective judgment, heart rate variability, and depth gaze behavior.

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is an important safety issue in stereoscopic 3D technology. Accompanying subjective judgment of VIMS with objective measurement is useful to identify not only biomedical effects of dynamic 3D contents, but also provoking scenes that induce VIMS, duration of VIMS, and user behavior during VIMS. Heart rate variability and depth gaze behavior are appropriate physiological indicators for such objective observation. However, there is no information about relationship between subjective judgment of VIMS, heart rate variability, and depth gaze behavior. In this…
