Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Its Effects on Physical Activity, Sports Participation, and Athletes.

This article discusses the "bidirectional" relationship between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and physical activity. Intestinal symptoms and extraintestinal manifestations of IBD negatively impact a patient's ability to participate in sports. IBD also impacts athletic performance via its effects on muscle mass, muscle function, bone density, and fatigue. Surveys of IBD patients consistently show that IBD interferes with athletic participation. While IBD negatively affects physical activity, there is growing evidence that physical activity can be beneficial for IBD patients. Prospective stud

An Optimized Ex Vivo Protocol for Quantitative Electrophysiological Assessment of Neuromuscular Junctions and Skeletal Muscle Function Using the Aurora System.

The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is critical for muscle function, and its dysfunction underlies conditions such as sarcopenia and motor neuron diseases. Current protocols for assessing NMJ function often lack standardized stimulation parameters, limiting reproducibility. This study presents an optimized ex vivo method to evaluate skeletal muscle and NMJ function using the Aurora Scientific system, incorporating validated stimulation protocols for both nerve and muscle to ensure consistency. Key steps include tissue preparation in a low-calcium, high-magnesium solution to preserve NMJ integrity

The aim was to evaluate the diffe … emophilic knee arthropathy does not in any way differ from activation in healthy subjects. However, muscle fatigue is greater in patients with knee arthropathy. Strength training in patients with hemophilia should focus on the activation of the vastus medialis and lateralis muscles.

Effects of Acute Piano Performance With Blood Flow Restriction on Upper Limb Muscle and Perceptual Response in Pianists.

BACKGROUND: Long-term and prolonged piano performance does not provide essential skeletal muscle training benefits while increasing the risk of injury to the upper extremities. Unlike high-intensity exercise training, moderate blood flow restriction (BFR) training has been found to improve neuromuscular mechanisms with a variety of physical exercises (machine, elastic band, walking, electrical stimulation, and body weight). AIM AND METHODS: We investigated the physiological and perceptual responses related to piano performance with or without BFR based on acute responses of neuromuscular mech

Muscle mass and association to quality of life in non-small cell lung cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Cancer wasting is characterized by muscle loss and may contribute to fatigue and poor quality of life (QoL). Our aim was to investigate associations between skeletal muscle index (SMI) and skeletal muscle radiodensity (SMD) and selected QoL outcomes in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at diagnosis. METHODS: Baseline data from patients with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC and performance status 0-2 enrolled in three randomized trials of first-line chemotherapy (n = 1305) were analysed. Associations between SMI (cm2 /m2 ) and SMD (Hounsfield units) based on computed tomography-images

Maternal Creatine Supplementation during Pregnancy Prevents Long-Term Changes in Diaphragm Muscle Structure and Function after Birth Asphyxia.

Using a model of birth asphyxia, we previously reported significant structural and functional deficits in the diaphragm muscle in spiny mice … ge when they were euthanized to obtain the diaphragm muscle for ex-vivo study of twitch tension and muscle fatigue, and for structural and enzymatic analyses. Functional analysis of the diaphragm revealed no differences in single twitch contractile parameters between any groups. However, muscle fatigue, induced by stimulation of diaphragm strips with a train of …

Effects of a pulmonary rehabilitation program on exercise capacity, muscle oxygenation, and respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, in a patient with subphrenic abscesses: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Subphrenic abscesses are infected structures that arise above or below the diaphragm and cause pulmonary problems such as dyspnea, pneumonia, and basal atelectasis. After medical treatment, persistent respiratory and functional impairments may remain, requiring additional interventions such as pulmonary rehabilitation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 16-year-old previously healthy male adolescent was diagnosed with a subphrenic abscess accompanied by pneumonia and pleural effusion after radiological and laboratory evaluation. Although appropriate medical treatment was completed and the patien

Post-COVID exercise intolerance is associated with capillary alterations and immune dysregulations in skeletal muscles.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic not only resulted in millions of acute infections worldwide, but also in many cases of post-infectious syndromes, colloquially referred to as "long COVID". Due to the heterogeneous nature of symptoms and scarcity of available tissue samples, little is known about the underlying mechanisms. We present an in-depth analysis of skeletal muscle biopsies obtained from eleven patients suffering from enduring fatigue and post-exertional malaise after an infection with SARS-CoV-2. Compared to two independent historical control cohorts, patients with post-COVID exertion intoleran

Effect of lactate on depolarization-induced Ca(2+) release in mechanically skinned skeletal muscle fibers.

It is unclear whether accumulation of lactate in skeletal muscle fibers during intense activity contributes to muscle fatigue. Using mechanically skinned fibers from rat and toad muscle, we were able to examine the effect of L(+)-lactate on excitation-contraction coupling independently of other metabolic changes. We investigated the effects of lactate on the contractile apparatus, caffeine-induced Ca(2+) release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, and depolarization-induced Ca(2+) release. Lactate (15 or 30 mM) had only a small inhibitory effect directly on the contractile apparatus and caused ap…

Enteroviruses and postviral fatigue syndrome.

Postviral fatigue syndrome (PFS) occurs both in epidemics and sporadically. Many of the original epidemics were related to poliomyelitis outbreaks which either preceded or followed them. The core clinical symptoms are always the same: severe fatigue made worse by exercise, myalgia, night sweats, atypical depression and excessive sleep. The other common symptoms include dysequilibrium disorders and irritable bowel syndrome. We have detected enteroviral genome sequences in muscle biopsies from cases of PFS, using specific enteroviral oligonucleotide primers in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Protein Supplementation During or Following a Marathon Run Influences Post-Exercise Recovery.

The effects of protein supplementation on the ratings of energy/fatigue, muscle soreness [ascending (A) and descending (D) stairs], and serum creatine kinase levels following a marathon run were examined. Variables were compared between recreational male and female runners ingesting carbohydrate + protein (CP) during the run (CPDuring, n = 8) versus those that were consuming carbohydrate (CHODuring,n = 8). In a second study, outcomes were compared between subjects who consumed CP or CHO immediately following exercise [CPPost (n = 4) versus CHOPost (n = 4)]. Magnitude-based inferences revealed

Dysphonia as first symptom of late-onset myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder of the neuromuscular junction that causes muscle weakness and fatigue. Fluctuating fatigue of skeletal muscles is the key clinical feature. Late-onset MG is more frequent in elderly men and is often misdiagnosed. While involvement of oropharyngeal musculature has been described with symptoms of dysphagia and slurred speech, the presence of fluctuating dysphonia as the first symptom of late-onset MG has not been emphasized. The case of an elderly man, who demonstrated voice changes and later swallowing impairment with weight loss, is reported. Th

Muscle stiffness and spinal stretch reflex sensitivity in the triceps surae.

CONTEXT: Greater musculotendinous stiffness may enhance spinal stretch reflex sensitivity by improving mechanical coupling of the muscle spindle and the stretch stimulus. This heightened sensitivity would correspond with a shorter latency and higher-amplitude reflex response, potentially enhancing joint stability. OBJECTIVE: To compare spinal stretch reflex latency and amplitude across groups that differed in musculotendinous stiffness. DESIGN: Static group comparisons. SETTING: Research laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Forty physically active individuals (20 men, 20 women). IN

Stiffness and Running Performance: From the Tissue to the Body: A Narrative Review.

Running is a unique mode of locomotion, a gait with clear ground contact and aerial phases, during which the body experiences dynamic deformations at various scales. At each stride, the centre of mass lowers and rises under the action of articulated body segments with muscles and tendons stretching and shortening, inducing tissue loading. The capacity to resist such deformations, to dissipate or transmit forces or to store and release energy are all commonly lumped together within the concept of stiffness. Stiffness is commonly considered to be a major performance factor in running as it may i

Effect of unilateral nasal obstruction on tongue protrusion forces in growing rats.

Mouth breathing caused by nasal obstruction affects the normal growth and development of craniofacial structures, including changes in the orofacial muscles. Tongue muscles play an important role in patency of the pharyngeal airway, and changes in the breathing pattern may influence tongue function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of unilateral nasal obstruction during growth on contractile properties of the tongue-protruding muscles. Sixty 6-day-old male Wistar albino rats were divided randomly into control (n = 30) and experimental (n = 30) groups. Rats in the experiment

Pathogenic tracks in fatigue syndromes.

This review analyses the recent literature devoted to two related fatigue syndromes: chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and acute onset postviral fatigue syndrome (PVFS). The articles are grouped into five pathogenic tracks: infectious agents, immune system, skeletic muscle, hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and psychiatric factors. Although a particular infectious agent is unlikely to be responsible for all CFS cases, evidence is shown that host-parasite relationships are modified in a large proportion of patients with chronic fatigue. Antibody titres against infectious agents are often el

Effects of electrical cutaneous stimulation of the foot sole on voluntary plantarflexion rate of torque development after fatigue in males.

PURPOSE: Fast rate of torque development (RTD) is crucial for all movements, from balance to athletics. Aging and fatigue decrease RTD, increasing fall and injury risk. Thus, finding accessible methods to increase RTD is necessary. Given the neuromechanical coupling that exists between foot-sole skin and lower-limb motor neurons, cutaneous stimulation may impact RTD. This work investigated whether foot-sole cutaneous stimulation could mitigate the fatigue-induced declines in plantarflexion RTD. METHODS: Adult males (n = 11, age = 28(7)) participated in three data collection sessions. Voluntar
