Changing paradigms in parasitic infections: common dermatological helminthic infections and cutaneous myiasis.

Parasitic diseases caused by helminths, or worms, account for billions of human infections worldwide. Although most human pathogens caused b … ng skin nodules, cysts, migratory skin lesions, and pruritus. In this section, we discuss cutaneous myiasis as well as the four most common nematode dermatologic conditions seen in the United States.

Cutaneous myiasis: review of 13 cases in travelers returning from tropical countries.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis is frequently reported in patients from tropical countries. Most commonly infestation is due to Cordylobia anthropophaga and Dermatobia hominis, whereas Hypoderma lineatum is less likely to affect humans. METHODS: The clinical and parasitologic aspects in a series of 13 patients with cutaneous myiasis seen in a German travel clinic are reviewed. RESULTS: Six patients were infected with larvae of the tumbu fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga, six with larvae of the botfly, Dermatobia hominis, and one patient presented with an infection with Hypoderma lineatum. Dermatob…

Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) causing hospital-acquired myiasis of a traumatic wound.

A case of traumatic nosocomial myiasis caused by the green bottle fly Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826) occurred in a patient hospitalized following a serious road traffic accident. The patient had suffered extensive polytrauma particularly in the facial area of the skull. A total of 50 larvae was discovered in the oral cavity, nose, paranasal sinuses and enucleated eye-socket. Projected timing indicated that the eggs were laid while the patient was hospitalized. The development of myiasis was facilitated by the mental and physical debility and dependency of the patient, numerous and deep facial…

A Case of Nasal Myiasis Without Any Predisposing Factors: An Uncommon Presentation.

Nasal myiasis is an uncommon human parasitic disease affecting the nasal cavity. In otolaryngology, myiasis is mostly encountered as aural myiasis and oral myiasis, but occurs rarely as nasal myiasis. It typically affects individuals with poor hygiene, chronic illness, or immunosuppression. Cases in immunocompetent individuals are exceptional and can present diagnostic challenges. We report the case of a 32-year-old immunocompetent female who presented with the spontaneous expulsion of small larvae through the nostrils. Live larvae were observed in both nasal cavities during endoscopic examina…

Oral myiasis complicating endotracheal intubation in a diabetic patient: a case report.

Myiasis is a rare parasitic disease caused by infestation of dipterous fly larvae into living human or animal tissues. Although nosocomial myiasis has been occasionally reported in critically ill patients, cases of oral myiasis in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) coma undergoing tracheal intubation remain rarely reported in South China. Herein, we report a clinical case of a 77-year-old male with type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed oral myiasis after emergency tracheal intubation for DKA coma. Comprehensive therapeutic strategies were implemented, including manual removal of larvae…

Oral Myiasis: A Structured Review of Risk Factors, Clinical Presentation, and Treatment.

Oral myiasis is an uncommon parasitic infestation caused by dipteran larvae that invade living or necrotic oral tissues, and it is associated with poor oral hygiene, periodontal disease, neurological or psychiatric disability, malignancy, and social vulnerability. This structured review aimed to characterize the risk factors, clinical presentation, and therapeutic alternatives for strictly oral myiasis. A literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, and Scopus to identify case reports and case series involving humans with disease restricted to the oral cavity, published in Spanis…

Genome of the Myiasis-Causing Fly Chrysomya bezziana, the Old-World Screwworm.

Chrysomya bezziana, the Old-World Screwworm, is a parasitic blowfly that causes myiasis, an infestation where larvae feed on live tissues of vertebrate hosts. Myiasis caused by C. bezziana poses a threat for public health and livestock economy in Asia with a potential risk of global spread by human travelers and animals. Genome resources for this parasite are urgently needed as these can facilitate the development of novel control methods to mitigate the impact of C. bezziana on public health and livestock industries. Here, we present the first genome assembly and annotation for C. bezziana. T…

Use of Ultrasound in the Diagnosis of Travel-Acquired Cutaneous Myiasis in a Pediatric Patient.

A pediatric patient presented to the emergency department with ambiguous scalp lesions following recent travel to a tropical region. Despite a prompt physical examination and subsequent laboratory investigations, a definitive diagnosis could not be established. An experienced ultrasound radiologist from our team was consulted to assist in the diagnostic process using ultrasound imaging. The ultrasound revealed the presence of subcutaneous larvae, confirming a diagnosis of cutaneous myiasis, which had initially mimicked a more common dermatological condition. This case highlights the valuable r…

Myiasis Encountered in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity: A Case Report.

Myiasis is a rare parasitic condition, caused by fly larvae infesting human tissues. Its consequences can be severe, as deafness, blindness, extensive tissue loss, and even death can occur due to the infestation. We present a case of myiasis in a 62-year-old Pakistani woman with advanced well-differentiated oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) undergoing palliative chemotherapy. The patient presented with an extensive, necrotic lesion in the submental and submandibular region infested with live larvae. Management included mechanical removal over three sessions and ivermectin. Once all the larva…

Nasal Myiasis in a Female with Christ-Siemens-Touraine Syndrome: A Case Report.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare disease that belongs to a diverse group of inherited monogenic disorders involving defects in one or more ectodermally or mesodermally derived tissues. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, also known as Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome is a type of ectodermal dysplasia characterized by a triad of anhidrosis, dysodontia, and hypotrichiasis. The most prevalent method of transmission is X-linked recessive, manifesting fully in men and only partially in female carrier heterozygotes. Atrophic rhinitis and nasal myiasis are rare characteristics of this condition. We here…
