Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the sublingual gland is an extremely rare neoplasm. The clinicopathological characteristics of ACC are slow-growing swelling with or without ulceration, perineural spread, local recurrence, and distant metastasis. This report describes a 58-year-old male who had a slowly growing swelling without ulceration on the right side of the mouth floor that had been present for 1 month. In a radiological examination, the mass showed multilocular cystic features and no bony or tongue muscle invasion. No enlarged cervical lymph nodes were detected. Excisional biopsy and h

The ovarian Growing Teratoma Syndrome (GTS) is a rare condition among patients with primary Non-Seminomatous Germ Cell Tumours (NSGCT) presenting with enlarging masses during or after appropriate chemotherapy in the context of normalized serum markers. Several modes of dissemination are suggested, with the most frequent site of metastasis being the peritoneum. We report a case of a young patient with primary ovarian mixed NSGCT, who presented with Growing Teratoma Syndrome not only in the peritoneum but also within a trocar site after an initial surgery consisting in the laparoscopic morcellat

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma happens rarely, the clinical manifestations of the disease lacked specificity, with nasal obstruction and blood mainly in a unilateral nasal cavity. Two casas were reviewed, one case of tumor located in the middle of inferior turbinate; 1 in the bottom wall of the anterior nasal cavity. The tumor appeared dark red and unsmooth surface. Sinus CT scan showed occupying shadow and significant bone de struction. Complete resection of the lesion was performed. The pathology of neoplasm showed small-medium sized oval nuclei, high nucleus to cytoplasm ratio, and ac

Choricarcinoma is a beta human chorionic gonadotrophin secreting neoplasm pertinent to uterus and pregnancy mostly. It occurs primarily in gonads but rarely in extragonadal sites. Primary hepatic choriocarcinoma is an extremely rare tumor. Most of the reported cases are seen in infants representing metastasis from an occult placental choriocarcinoma. Till date, only 7 cases of primary hepatic choriocarcinoma in adults have been reported in literature. We present a case of a 40-yearold male presenting as haemoperitoneum due to ruptured hepatic tumor. He underwent emergency left lateral segmente

Myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare locally aggressive malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands. The tumor is composed almost exclusively of tumor cells with myoepithelial differentiation and characterized by infiltrative growth and potential for distant metastasis. Tumor cells often display morphologic heterogeneity with a wide range of cytomorphologic features, such as epithelioid, plasmacytoid, spindle, and clear cell types, making its recognition challenging. Only limited reports on its metastatic behavior are available in the literature. We describe a case of metastatic myoepithelial carci

OBJECTIVES: To assess the investigation and clinical outcome of patients presenting with unexplained vocal cord palsy (VCP).
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study designed to evaluate 86 patients with unexplained VCP presenting to our tertiary referral center.
RESULTS: Twenty-four (36%) patients had positive findings on CT scanning. Twenty-one (24%) cases showed mediastinal adenopathy +/- pulmonary mass. The other three cases were a thoracic aneurysm, prostatic metastasis below the skull base, and a postcricoid tumor. Follow-up period was 18 to 66 months. Fifteen (24%) of the

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma is a rare, low-grade neoplasm of the minor salivary glands. It is composed exclusively of epithelial cells with optically clear cytoplasm. There are only a few isolated cases reported in the literature involving the base of tongue. The treatment of choice is wide excision and selective neck dissection, with or without radiotherapy. The prognosis of these tumours is good. A 57-year-old male patient presented with a lesion in the base of tongue, which was well enhanced on contrast computerized tomography scan. Once confirmed by biopsy, the hyalinizing clear cell

Gestational choriocarcinoma is a highly metastatic neoplasm derived from placental tissue, occurring in approximately 1:20,000 - 40,000 pregnancies. Although gestational choriocarcinoma may follow any gestational event, it most commonly follows molar pregnancies. We report a case of a 24-year-old Hispanic woman with persistent trophoblastic disease who, after failing to respond to chemotherapy, was found to have metastasis to the liver and pancreas. The patient underwent successful distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy to be followed by salvage chemotherapy. Strong risk factors for choriocarci

We report a rare case of skull metastasis from ampulla of Vater adenocarcinoma in a patient with controlled primary neoplasm. This 65-year-old Korean man presented with headache and painful parietal scalp swelling, but he did not show any neurological deficits. Computed tomography revealed an osteolytic mass that invaded and expanded through the skull tables in full-thickness. On magnetic resonance images following Gadolinium injection, the mass appeared slightly hypointense signal on all sequences and intense heterogeneous enhancement. He underwent surgical excision with artificial grafting o

OBJECTIVE: Two cases of cystic neuroblastoma diagnosed by ultrasonography and CT are presented.
METHODS/RESULTS: Case 1 was diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography; case 2 was a palpable abdominal mass that was incidentally detected in a 15-day-old neonate. Both cases showed no analytical abnormalities. The histological analysis demonstrated a localized cystic neuroblastoma.
CONCLUSIONS: Cystic neuroblastoma as an atypical form of neuroblastoma in neonates localized in the adrenal gland. It is usually an incidental finding, diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography or as a palpable abdominal mass.

Benign mesenchymoma is an uncommon tumor containing at least two or more differentiated mesenchymal elements in addition to fibrous tissue. The case we presented here is a 60-year-old male who suffered from a superior posterior mediastinal mesenchymal tumor composed predominantly of mature adipose tissue separated by fascicular bundles of spindle cells admixed with cartilage and osseous tissue. The spindle cells were confirmed to be smooth muscle in nature by trichrome Masson stain and immunohistochemical studies, providing a picture consistent with that of benign mesenchymoma. Esthesioneuroblastoma, a malignant neoplasm arising from olfactory epithelium, is unusual in the pediatric age-group. Management has traditionally involved surgery and radiotherapy, alone or in combination, with chemotherapy reserved for recurrent or high grade disease. We report a single institution experience utilizing chemotherapy and radiotherapy as the initial treatment and successful control of the primary tumor in two patients. In one patient, neck dissection and high dose chemotherapy combined with autologous bone marrow transplantation were used as successful salvage therapy of neck m

Thirty patients presenting malignant adrenal tumors of which 19 women aged 3-70 years, and eleven men with ages ranging from 5 to 70 years, are operated in the clinic of endocrine surgery over the period 1965 through 1992. In 16 cases the neoplasm is located on the right side, and in thirteen--on the left side. In 26 patients it is a matter of primary tumor, and in four--metastasis. Ten patients present the clinical picture of corticosteroma, three--pheochromocytoma, and four--corticoandrosteroma. The neoplastic mass extirpated weighs from 69 to 2050 g, necessitating the performing of nephrect

Acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa is universally recognized as an individual disease and seldom reported as a genuine paraneoplastic manifestation. We report the case of a 30-year old woman with acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa. Due to the finding of a cervical lymph node metastasis, she was investigated for an internal neoplasm, but the original tumour could not be found by the usual methods. A bronchogenic carcinoma was discovered at autopsy. Beside hypertrichosis, this patient had other disorders not described in the literature as associated with that disease, viz.: progressive systemic

We report a case of hypercalcemia in a 20-year-old woman with an ovarian seminoma. She had neither evidence of bone metastasis nor hyperparathyroidism. Hypercalcemia was well controlled by corticotherapy and chemotherapy, and remained normal after remission was obtained. Different patterns in paraneoplastic hypercalcemia are detailed, with emphasis on PTH-related proteins and vitamin-D metabolites. Eleven cases of neoplasm with hypercalcemia and elevated calcitriol level are reported in the literature. One of them is a seminoma. These elevated levels could be related either to a PTH-like prote

Computed tomography was used to examine the three paraspinal interfaces (lines), consisting of the right and left paraspinal areas and the prespinal area in the lower thorax in 20 children. The abnormal CT findings were correlated with plain radiographic findings. The various disease contributing to paraspinal abnormality included malignant and benign neoplasm and inflammatory disease. Neuroblastoma was the most common entity. Fourteen of 20 patients had paraspinal masses representing either metastasis or lymphoma. Four had small pleural effusions and two had a combination of small pleural eff

Histologic features of an invasive mediastinal tumor found in a 25-year-old woman fulfilled the accepted criteria for diagnosis of predominantly lymphocytic thymoma. Histochemical and cell marker studies indicated that the neoplasm contained a preponderance of T lymphocytes. After surgical debulking of the mass, aggressive radiotherapy and chemotherapy eradicated all evidence of thoracic disease. However, six months after the initial diagnosis, rapid development of cranial nerve and brainstem metastases--without detectable recurrent disease elsewhere--resulted in the patient's death. We evaluated the results of right upper lobectomy with a sleeve resection of the right main bronchus in 50 patients with a bronchial neoplasm. Four patients (8 percent) died during surgery or postoperatively. Eight of the 22 patients who underwent surgery for carcinoma between the years 1960 and 1974 had tumor-positive hilar lymph nodes. They died as a result of subsequent extension of the resected carcinoma. Fourteen of the 22 patients had no lymph node metastasis and nine of them (64 percent) were alive after five years without detectable recurrence. The finding of positive hilar lymph nodes

Carcinoid tumor of the thymus is a rare neoplasm. Formerly confused with thymoma, a tumor of thymic epithelial cells, carcinoid tumor of the thymus has recently been shown to arise from cells of neuroendocrine origin that are normally present in the thymus. About half of the tumors are either functionally active (usually producing Cushing's syndrome) or are found in association with other endocrine tumors, as part of a multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome. The remainder occur as symptomatic or asymptomatic anterior mediastinal masses, clinically indistinguishable from thymoma. At least 30% of

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features, treatment and outcome of functioning adrenocortical tumours in children, and to assess the value of tumour size as a marker for malignant potential.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one children (mean age at presentation 4.9 years, range 0.6-11; 12 girls and nine boys) who presented with a functioning adrenal mass over a 29-year period (1972-2000) were assessed. Clinicopathological features and outcome information were obtained from a structured review of the case-notes. Before 1980 the diagnosis and staging was mainly obtained by intravenous pyelogra
