The efficacy of photodynamic therapy in treatment of recurrent squamous cell and basal cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: A number of investigations have already been carried out to assess the effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on primary basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) lesions, but lack of investigations on recurrent lesions or lesions with treatment failure, prompted the authors to carry out this study. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy on recurrent BCC and SCC lesions on head and neck skin. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients, including 16 men and 14 women, were selected from patients with recurrent SCC and BCC

Interventions for preventing non-melanoma skin cancers in high-risk groups.

BACKGROUND: Some groups of people have a greater risk of developing common non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate interventions for preventing NMSC in people at high risk of developing NMSC. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register (March 2007), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library Issue 1, 2007, MEDLINE (from 2003 to March 2007), EMBASE (from 2005 to March 2007), the metaRegister of Controlled Trials (February 2007). References from trials and reviews were also searched. Pharmaceutical companies were con

Multiple melanomas occurring in a patient with xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is associated with an increased frequency of cutaneous malignancies including malignant melanoma. We report a patient who developed eleven primary melanomas and numerous highly atypical nevi in addition to the basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas more commonly seen in patients with XP.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma arising in an inverted papilloma in the nasal cavity: A case report and review.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a histologically distinctive variant of squamous cell carcinoma comprising basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. BSCC is aggressive and shows a poor prognosis because of frequent lymph node invasion and distant metastases. BSCC preferentially occurs in the cervix, thymus, and esophagus and is uncommonly found in the head and neck region. BSCC in the nasal cavity or paranasal sinus is particularly rare. Inverted papilloma is an uncommon, benign tumor with a propensity to be associated with malignancy; however, BSCC arising in an inverted pa

Merkel Cell Carcinoma of the Hand: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Background: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a relatively rare and aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine malignancy characterized by high incidence of local recurrence, distant metastases, regional nodal metastases, and high mortality. Clinically, MCC presents as a persistent asymptomatic red/pink shaped nodule, usually smaller than 2 cm with nontender intracutaneous swelling, with rapidly growing localized disease with lymph node metastases preceding distant metastases. Because of its rare nature and the lack of comprehensive understanding of the disease, management of MCC has been controversial.

Photodynamic therapy of skin and esophageal cancers.

We report on 27 patients with cutaneous and subcutaneous malignancies and 40 patients with esophageal tumors treated with photodynamic therapy (PDT). Of those patients treated for skin tumors, seven had basal cell, three squamous cell, three malignant melanoma, one liposarcoma, and twelve had breast cancers. One patient had Bowen's disease. Treatment was given either by surface radiation or interstitially. One month after treatment, 48 (67%) of the treatment sessions resulted in a complete response (no clinical evidence of tumor) and 19 (26%) resulted in a partial response (more than a 50% red

[Giant cutaneous basal cell carcinoma of the head with intracranial propagation--a case report].

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the skin is generally characterised by a favourable clinical outcome. The slow and mostly local character of growth helps in its early recognition, thus the vast majority of cases are diagnosed in the early phase of disease. However, in cases of long-term neglect of clinical symptoms, certain cancers may reach huge proportions and may significantly destroy surrounding tissue. BCCs larger than 5 cm are called giant BCCs. The authors of the article present a case report of woman suffering from a giant BCC of the head with a history of 15 years of lasting growth, dur

Nonsyndromic giant basal cell carcinoma with follicular differentiation and multifocal localized basal cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the skin. The most important feature is its very slow growth rate. It takes many years to reach gigantic dimensions. Various syndromes have been defined in which basal cell carcinoma exists in multiple localizations in a single patient. A case of basal cell carcinoma with multiple localizations and gigantic dimensions which is not classified as a syndrome is described in this case report.

Tumor of follicular infundibulum - reappraisal in a series of 28 patients with critical review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tumor of follicular infundibulum (TFI) has been described as a neoplasm - isolated and multiple - and in association with other lesions. Its histopathologic definition is controversial. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We present a histopathologically analyzed series of 28 patients with TFI features. This has been supplemented by a search in MEDLINE on the literature on this subject. The corresponding figures given in these articles have been discussed and analyzed. RESULTS: Patients comprised 16 women and twelve men. TFI features were seen in five patients with nevus sebaceo

The role of dermoscopy in optimizing surgical margins for keratinocyte cancers: updated evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Keratinocyte cancer (KC) is the most common malignancy worldwide. Surgical excision is the primary treatment, with clear margin delineation critical for oncological and cosmetic outcomes. Dermoscopy, well established for diagnosis, has recently been included in updated British guidelines as an alternative method for surgical margin planning and may offer improved border visualization. OBJECTIVES: To update the existing evidence on dermoscopy-guided excision of KC, focusing on margin control and recurrence risk and incorporating newly published studies and re-evaluating its use con

Trichofolliculoma of the vulva associated with vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia: report of three cases and review of the literature.

Trichofolliculoma is an uncommon, benign cutaneous adnexal neoplasm most commonly occurring on the head and neck. Trichofolliculoma of the vulva has not been previously reported. The juxtaposition of a trichofolliculoma in an excisional biopsy specimen performed for vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN III) created a diagnostic dilemma and prompted a review of our files from 1989 to 2000 for additional cases. A search for benign hair follicle tumors of the vulva identified two additional trichofolliculomas. All three vulvar trichofolliculomas were associated with VIN III. During this same per

[Therapy of non-melanocytic skin tumors].

Actinic keratosis on sun-damaged skin are very common in individuals with fair complexion. Management encompasses cryosurgery, tretinoin or 5-fluorouracil-cream. Bowen's disease, however, requires surgical excision or radiotherapy. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the two most common malignant skin tumours in Western Europe. Typically these tumours can be managed either by excision and primary wound closure, by cryosurgery or by radiotherapy. The method of choice is determined by the type and location of the tumour and the general condition of the patient. For more difficul

Malignant transformation of perianal condyloma acuminatum: a case report with review of the literature.

A case of squamous-cell carcinoma arising in association with perianal condyloma acuminatum was studied by light microscopy. The eight previously reported cases of malignant transformation of perianal and anorectal condylomata acuminatum are reviewed and the salient features described. Light microscopic examination of the case reported here demonstrated several foci of subtle and abrupt transition from condyloma acuminatum to epithelial dysplasia and to carcinoma in situ with focal frank invasion. This study further substantiates the existence of malignant transformation of condyloma acuminatu

A retrospective analysis of secondary malignancy development in nevus sebaceus.

Nevus sebaceous (NS) is a benign hamartomatous lesion; however, benign proliferative lesions are less frequently associated with secondary neoplasms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of secondary benign and malignant tumours seen in NS lesions, and to reveal the histopathological features of these lesions. Eighty-six NS cases were retrospectively evaluated for gender, age, lesion location, and accompanying lesions, as well as secondary benign and malignant tumours. The data obtained using descriptive statistics were analysed. 66.3% of cases were male, 33.7% were female, and

Review of 189 Consecutive Female Genital Skin and Mucosal Biopsies Submitted to an Academic Dermatopathology Practice.

OBJECTIVES: To describe consecutive vulvar biopsy cases and to create an educational template for pathology trainees and practicing pathologists. METHODS: We reviewed 189 consecutive biopsies from the female genital area skin and mucosa. We classified them based on etiologies and examined limited clinical information. RESULTS: We classified diagnoses as squamous intraepithelial neoplasia (21.5%), melanocytic neoplasia (17.9%), lichenoid dermatoses (15.9%), nonlichenoid dermatoses (11.3%), infectious (6.2%), reparative (4.6%), or miscellaneous (22.6%). GIANT BASAL CELL CARCINOMA ON THE FOREHEAD AND WHY WE SHOULD PREVENT THEM - CASE REPORT.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most prevalent malignancy, with rising incidence worldwide. Despite its naturally slow growth and initially low metastatic potential, it can cause significant morbidity and mortality when unrecognized, inadequately treated or poorly followed up. Authors present the case of a 61-year-old male with a 7-year history of multiple incomplete excisions of a “simple” BCC on the forehead. A CT scan of the head revealed an invasive mass (5.2 cm laterolateral x 4.0 cm craniocaudal) in the frontal area. There was no evidence of metastasis. Complete resection o
