Canine bile duct carcinoma.

Twenty-four adenocarcinomas of the hepatobiliary system were found among 110 primary hepatic neoplasms: 22 of these were intrahepatic, one involved the extrahepatic bile duct and one the gall bladder. Histologically, 10 intrahepatic neoplasms were classified as cholangiocarcinoma, and 12 as bile duct cystadenocarcinoma. The former were characterized by tubular structures lined by anaplastic cuboidal or columnar cells with diffuse fibrous stroma, and the latter by multiple cystic structures with papillary and solid areas. Half the bile duct cystadenocarcinomas showed benign cysts and transition

Risk factors for developing multiple malignancies in patients with endometrial cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to investigate the clinical and pathologic characteristics of patients with endometrial cancer (EC) and associated breast, colorectal, or ovarian cancer, and to define the risk of developing an associated malignancy during follow-up after EC treatment. METHODS/MATERIALS: During a 13-year period, 1028 women had a hysterectomy for EC at our institution and available clinical information. An associated malignancy was defined as diagnosis of another malignant disease before or at the time of operation for EC or during follow-up. RESULTS: Of these 1028 p

Synchronous primary aneurysmal bone cysts: A rare case report and literature review.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare benign osteolytic tumors which occur most frequently within the first two decades of life and can lead to pathological fractures. They have characteristic imaging and histologic features and have historically been classified into two types: primary ABCs, which are true neoplasms linked to specific oncogenes, and secondary ABCs, which are preceded by other bone lesions. The occurrence of multiple concurrent primary ABCs is exceedingly rare; with only a few cases reported in the published literature. Here, we present an unusual case of this condition, along

Multifocal supratentorial diffuse glioma in a young patient with Ollier disease.

Ollier disease is a rare disorder characterised by the development of multiple enchondromas in long bones. Here we present a 19-year-old man with Ollier disease who also developed three synchronous brain tumours. Craniotomy, biopsy and debulking was performed for one lesion followed by a period of observation, and 9 months later he underwent a second craniotomy and debulking for symptomatic progression. Histopathological examination revealed a diagnosis of multifocal diffuse glioma (World Health Organization grade II). This report highlights the increased incidence of primary brain tumours in

Clinical Features, Treatments, and Outcomes of Patients with Thymic Carcinoids and Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 Syndrome at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Thymic carcinoids are rare neuroendocrine tumors that occur in 1-5 % of patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) and are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The few published reports associate these tumors with male sex and smoking. Our objective was to describe cases of these tumors treated at our institution. We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients diagnosed with MEN1 at our tertiary referral center from 1980 to 2014. Patients with a histopathologic, fine-needle aspiration, or clinical diagnosis of a thymic carcinoid were included. Two hundred ninety-o

Sebaceous gland tumors and systemic disease: a clinicopathologic analysis.

The association of sebaceous gland neoplasms with visceral carcinomas, first described by Muir and Torre, has become widely recognized. The purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence of malignancy, other associated diseases, and familial carcinoma in patients who had one or more cutaneous lesions within the spectrum of sebaceous adenoma, epithelioma, or carcinoma. Our histopathology files contained tissue from 59 such cases. Overlap between the categories was common, often precluding precise histologic classification. Of the 59 patients, 25 (42%) had one or more primary visceral mali

Plasmacytoma of the kidney.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare malignant neoplasm typically arising outside the bone marrow of patients who show no clinical evidence of multiple myeloma. Kidney is a rare site for plasmacytoma. We present here a case of primary renal plasmacytoma confirmed on histopathology of the specimen and immuno-histochemistry studies. Patient was treated with radical nephrectomy followed by radiotherapy. The case is presented due to its rarity.

Malignant Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Mediastinum with Multiple Recurrences and a Rare Metastasis to the Thyroid Gland: A Case Report.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare neoplasms arising from mesenchymal cells. Although most SFTs are benign, rare cases of metastasis have been reported at various sites. Complete surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment for both primary and recurrent or metastatic SFTs. Herein, we present a case of an SFT initially identified in the anterior mediastinum that later developed multiple metastases, even to the thyroid gland. The patient underwent repeated surgical resection and is currently being followed up in an outpatient setting.

Simultaneous primary oat cell carcinoma (apudoma) and squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx.

The first case of the association of oat cell carcinoma and squamous carcinoma of the hypopharynx occurring in a 57-year-old man is reported. The patient underwent total laryngopharyngectomy with radical neck dissection, but died 3 1/2 months after diagnosis with multiple bone metastases of the ribs and vertebrae. The histogenesis of oat cell carcinoma in the hypopharynx is discussed, together with the therapeutic approach for the simultaneous occurrence of two primary malignant neoplasms in the same organ.

Body site of cutaneous malignant melanoma--a study on patients with hereditary and multiple sporadic tumours.

Individuals with an increased risk of developing cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) include members of kindreds with hereditary cutaneous malignant melanoma (HCMM) and patients who have already been treated for a CMM. Some of these patients develop multiple primary cutaneous malignant melanomas (MCMMs). Ultraviolet radiation is the main instigator of CMM. There are indications that patients in these high-risk groups react differently to sunlight than patients who develop a single sporadic CMM. The objectives of this study were to analyse tumour site in patients with HCMM and sporadic MCMM. Dat

Multiple primary melanomas: implications for screening and follow-up programs for melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Once individuals are diagnosed with malignant melanoma, they are at an increased risk of developing another melanoma when compared with the normal population. METHODS: To determine the impact of an intensive follow-up protocol on the stage of disease at diagnosis of subsequent primary melanomas, a retrospective query was performed of an electronic medical record database of 2,600 consecutively registered melanoma patients. RESULTS: Sixty-seven patients (2.6%) had another melanoma diagnosed at the time of presentation to the clinic or within 2 months (synchronous) and another 44 p

Magnetic resonance imaging of the bone marrow in hematological malignancies.

Despite its lack of specificity, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the bone marrow has the potential to play a role in the management of patients with primary neoplastic disorders of the hematopoietic system, including lymphomas, leukemias and multiple myeloma. In addition to its use in the assessment of suspected spinal cord compression, bone marrow MRI could be used as a prognostic method or as a technique to assess the response to treatment. The current review addresses the common patterns of bone marrow involvement observed in primary neoplasms of the bone marrow, basic technical princip

Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver in adult patient: A report of two cases.

Primary sarcomas of the liver are unusual neoplasms developing in adults. They constitute a heterogeneous group of neoplasms including undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma. Patients usually present with an abdominal mass and abdominal pain. Case 1: A 53-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed an occupying mass in the right lobule and an intra-auricular multi-lobulated mass suggestive of a secondary deposit. Biopsy of the hepatic lesion revealed undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma. Despite radiotherapy and supportive measures, her overall status progressively worse

Understanding Proteus syndrome, unmasking the elephant man, and stemming elephant fever.

Four patients with Proteus syndrome are reported; 3 of the 4 died of unusual causes. Current findings of the syndrome are reviewed, and the present state of its delineation is assessed with emphasis on what is known about natural history. Differential diagnosis includes neurofibromatosis, Klippel-Trénaunay-Weber syndrome, Maffucci syndrome, epidermal nevus syndrome, and the combination of Bannayan-Zonana syndrome, Riley-Smith syndrome, and Ruvalcaba-Myhre syndrome, now thought to constitute a single disorder. Conditions that may possibly overlap with Proteus syndrome--encephalocraniocutaneous

Problems in pathologic staging of lung cancer.

CONTEXT: Tumor stage is the most important prognostic and predictive factor for patients with lung cancer, the most lethal neoplasm in the United States. It is used by thoracic surgeons, radiation therapists, and oncologists to determine whether patients with these neoplasms will be treated surgically with curative intent or with palliative radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. OBJECTIVE: To review the variety of practical problems that can arise during the assessment of the pathologic stage and other prognostic/predictive factors included in the College of American Pathologist checklist for

Primary plasma cell leukemia presenting as a thoracic mass.

Primary Plasma cell leukaemia (pPCL) is a rare plasma cell (PC) malignancy. The strict criteria for the diagnosis is an absolute PC number greater 2 × 10(9)/L or a plasmocytosis accounting for > 20% of the differential white cell count that does not arise from a pre-existing multiple myeloma. pPCL was associated with aggressive clinic-biological features. Primary Plasma cell leukaemia is more characterised by an extra medullar involvement such as hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, lepto-meningeal infiltration or extramedullary plasmocytomas. The prognosis of pPCL is very poor. We rep
